How big of a star is Jelly roll?

I don't know, everything seems to be ok when people make good, get rich, it's pretty easy to be a good person then.

My parents came from nothing. Never stole, never hurt people, Christmas they basically got nothing.

Met later in lifearred had two kids

Jail was not a part of it.

Myself,, I've been in jelly rolls mindset. Hurting other people, criminal life was not something I could do.

And I have been in some dire predicament, could make my own ai movie

My choices were always gonna be hurt only me, if i can't help me.

These bad guys turned good stories basically send the message that as long as everything turns out in the end it's ok.

But it doesn't vast majority of times.

Your still a cocksucka who just got Lucky

Yeah', typical liberal leftist mentality.
Glory and success by exploiting suffering, criminality, and martyrdom...

He's huge in the country world , Started off as rapper on street life and drugs , Then wrote a song call Somebody save me , It blew up on YouTube , Rest is history . Both parents were drug addicts , Typical bad childhood .All his songs now are basically on redemption

Damn.

I Iooked on here at what's been written today about Jelly Roll by Tony and Dom and...I think...that I find myself in agreement with both of them.

I think that NEED A FAVOR is a great lyric that grabs a listener. Jelly Roll's personal story makes it even more compelling.

Yet, I think about all of the talented people out there who never made it, lived decent lives, never committed a felony, never got into drugs, and certainly never had a stint in the penitentiary.

I've always thought that the subtext to stories like Jelly Roll is that, you too, can spend some time destroying your own life and badly damaging many others...butt then...you too can rise from the ashes and realize all of your dreams and become a singing celebrity, and a beacon of hope.

So whether or not he is an exemplary story of redemption, or a roll model that makes felonious behavior appear a rite of passage to some...is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

I listened

Chord progression been used thousand times.

It's ok. But japov is right . He's totally or his label is totally exploiting himself.

I guess all artists need a back story. But in my opinion this is bullshit.

Mediocre song, mediocre vocal, clear exploitation, .

I think I heard his other song about praying to God.

Sometimes its the back story that sells the artist

I think that the word play in NEED A FAVOR is excellent.

"I only talk to God when I need a favor
And I only pray when I ain't got a prayer
So, who the hell am I, who the hell am I
To expect a Savior,"

So universally experienced. So much said and a state of mind well delivered in very few words.
And JR has a good voice.

I didn't know anything about him I did hear the prayer song.

But when I saw the movie and heard somebody save me, I had doubts on authenticy.

Simple google found this

AI Overview

+11
Allegations that musician Jelly Roll exploits his past and others have been made by some drug policy experts and fans, but he and others deny this. The term may also refer to a recent lawsuit filed against him by a wedding band.
Exploitation allegations
Controversy over a fentanyl bill: In January 2024, Jelly Roll testified before the U.S. Senate in support of the FEND Off Fentanyl Act, a bill that aims to combat opioid trafficking. Some drug policy experts and harm reduction advocates, however, criticized his stance. They argue that supporting a bill focused on penalizing traffickers rather than addressing the root causes of addiction could be harmful to drug users.
Criticism of his career narrative: Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, has openly discussed his criminal history and past struggles with addiction. While he uses this narrative to promote redemption, some critics suggest he sensationalizes or "exploits" his troubled past for profit. In 2024, he acknowledged that some people are angry about his success, given his past behavior.
Response to allegations: Jelly Roll has directly addressed some of these claims. He has admitted to being a "horrible kid" who was "narcissistic" and "selfish" but has consistently used his platform to highlight his personal growth. He has also focused on giving back through philanthropy, such as donating album pre-order funds to charity and working with juvenile detention centers.

What annoys me most is how people then tell everybody else ... don't do this or don't do that..

Yeah, now that you have this lavish life, tell the people who don't not to.

You'd still be living that life if you didn't get a career in music.

.

Good grief Dom,

We agree again.
I fall in with those people who think that when drug addicts, career criminals et al clean themselves up, they should just lead quite law abiding productive lives.
Thereby leading by example.

The ones that go on the lecture circuit yammering on and on about how bad they were until they turned it all around, often appear to be substituting one set of obsessions for another.
Which makes you wonder when the first obsession will return again.

It delivers the subtext to the young and inexperienced...
You have a lot of time left in your life, you can indulge vices now and then turn it all around and become a super hero like me. Do as I say, not as I did.
"Jelly Roll was a druggie like me and now look at him."

But there is a giant and profitable industry that supplies drugs.
And a giant and often profitable industry that supplies rehabillitation.
And you have the Jelly Rolls. And you have the Hunter Bidens. And you have ?

Success and benefit or not, is in the eye of the beholder.

From that POV, I think the outlook for humans is even more dismal than "collaboration."
Talented industry people are using AI for collaboration and to do all the heavy musical lifting, in the space of a few seconds.

Those talented people are training AI to emulate everything that they do, more and more, with each passing day.

I think there will always be room for humans in collaboration with ai or with people

I think there can still always be bands writing their own stuff. Always be songwriters saying hey you know what, let get together [naughty word removed] ai, let's just write a bunch of songs.

Ai is still about the have nots, more than the haves.

That's the point, John.
Find the others who DON'T use AI. Trust me, they're out there... wink

I can not use ai if I want to, but what difference does it make if I don't.

I do look forward to doing all myself but ai as band and engineer

I think so too.
The questions that I have...How many? as a percentage? what level of competition for the slots left?

As for bands, I think so too,
but I remember being amazed at the size of crowds who came out to see a "celebrity DJ" do nothing more than pick and spin records and screw around with a turn-table.
I sold a townhouse to a local "celebrity DJ" years ago, who had a sizeable following in Houston, and moved to LA. "DJ RED."
He let me watch him work at home one day. He assembled "samples," picked from libraries and then went out and played them to an audience. He did not play any instrument or sing.

Question for you:
Would it matter if he was a hologram rather than a human?

I foresee robot concerts, I can see it now ..come to Great adventure and see roboblaster live on stage.

So, I think the question if either or is not the right question. Id say all ai will exist, all non ai will exist, and a hybrid of both will exist.
Will come down to if anybody likes it, ive been saying that all along.

My intuition tells me that human songs will have more staying power.

Great question. It puts your work under the microscope.

Really nobody will know if ai or said person wrote something.

Unless they perfect a tool that knows ai when it heard it. At least a good one will be needed

https://suno.com/song/d22e5024-69fd-4277-a1f3-334903ddc37c

(Verse 1)
I was lost in a bottle, down a dark dirt road
Had a Bible full of dust and a heart gone cold
Mama prayed every night I'd find my way
But I was knee-deep in demons I couldn’t escape
Tattooed tears and a busted past
Tried to run from the pain, but it ran too fast
Till I heard a voice on a late-night show
A sinner speakin' truth through the radio
(Chorus)
🎶 Jelly Roll saved my soul
Through the static and the smoke
Preachin' pain like a backwoods gospel
Turned my wreck into hope
He sang, "You're not alone"
And it hit me to the bone
Yeah, he ain't no saint — but he knows my road
Jelly Roll saved my soul 🎶
(Verse 2)
Every lyric was a mirror I was scared to face
But he made me feel seen in my lowest place
A country boy cryin’ in a motel bed
Feelin’ every word that that outlaw said
He don’t wear no robe, don’t carry no cross
But he lifts up the broken and counts the lost
Like a preacher in a snapback, speakin' scars
Singin’ hallelujahs over steel-string guitars
(Chorus)
🎶 Jelly Roll saved my soul
Through the static and the smoke
Preachin' pain like a backwoods gospel
Turned my wreck into hope
He sang, "You're not alone"
And it hit me to the bone
Yeah, he ain't no saint — but he knows my road
Jelly Roll saved my soul 🎶
(Bridge)
Now I keep that fire burnin' in my chest
Learned that fallin' don't mean you're less
We're all just stories that grace rewrote
And sometimes angels come in tattoos and notes
(Final Chorus)
🎶 Jelly Roll saved my soul
Through the static and the smoke
Gave me faith in the middle of the fallout
Pulled me outta that hole
He sang, "You're not alone"
And I found my way back home
Yeah, he ain’t no saint — but he showed me gold
Jelly Roll saved my soul 🎶
Yeah Jelly Roll saved my soul

So what do you want Jelly Roll to do , Keep doing drugs and stay in prison ?
He pulled out of it. Hunter Biden ? Ridiculous comparison. As far as AI and recording studios , Artists use studios like me , AI is a good tool though. Yeah all these experts say in 2025 , Better get with the program use AI combined with humans

The question when and how did he pull out of it .

Don't blame him it's a good gig if you can get it. It's about society itself. Lots of people get hooked on drugs, do rehab go back to work at an honest job.

These kind of stories seem to say hey, you can get away with what I got away with and still be s millionaire, and well settle for no less

My question is how is he still not in jail if he did so many crimes. 2 years a pop minimum... 10 15 times.

basically saying good people manage hardship everyday. Nobody celebrates them

Why don't you watch the movie instead of judging him, You've been saying you're going to a studio for 3 years now. He's in 2025 combining AI with he's talent

I watched the movie. I'm not a big fan, it might be harder if I was a big fan to criticize.

It's not judging, it's the truth.

If he didn't become a big star, then he's a lowlife right? If he ransacked your home, you wouldn't be saying, hey this guy might one day become a star.

Ud be saying Fack this guy.

But all is well now he wouldn't be the only one, and Im not begrudging his success.

It's just some people commit one crime and never live it down the rest of their life.

I don't know just bothers me

It dont look like it Ben.
It looks like his criminal life is "street cred" and he is using it to pump his stardom.
Similar to JZ and others.

I dont see anything about JR's current life that looks like a prison.
Looks like a good ride to me.

I relate to him...
We're all products of our environment and the sum of our decisions.
But, there's always that "one thing" that remains consistent throughout our lives.
He persisted and it paid off, good for him.
Now he gives God the credit, who am I to argue?

Stupid fuk'n commercials!

GRAVITE'...

I think women are going to remember that scent and humiliate any man wearing it! JUST BECAUSE OF THAT STUPID COMMERCIAL!

That little Italian is HOT though! "Come on, bring him back." Heh...

But they ended with the stereotypical dumb blond!

STUPID!

If we're all products of our environment, why doesn't everybody sell drugs and commit crime?

Only a select few do. While it's true dreams dint come true in the hood, most people know wrong and right, and he did too.

He didn't find Gid till last Year.

Where was God when he really needed him.
