You’ve Got Your Whole Life Ahead of You ©2025 Robert George
Well, I grew up on the side of town Where a man’s bandanna is his crown By first grade I stole bikes n skateboards In high school it was beer n V-8 Fords
And by the time I turned nineteen My whole life was like a crime scene My dad knew what bein’ lawless meant to me So he tried to talk some sense to me
“You’ve got your whole life ahead of you When your horizons seem unclear Faith becomes a beautiful frontier Don’t despair, the Good Lord cares And you’ve got your whole life ahead of you”
Sometimes heaven’s plan walks between the winds One man’s death redeems another man’s sins When my father’s cough got the best of him I saw my life clearer as his poor eyes grew dim
His lungs were gasping for breath But his time was grasping for death I pulled up his blanket and wiped a tear Leaned in close and whispered “Do not fear
You’ve got your whole life ahead of you Because ev’ry man is mortal But your faith will pass that portal Don’t despair, the Good Lord shares And you’ve got your whole life ahead of you”
I could’ve let my soul grow cold and gloomy And slowly let his death consume me But I saw the stars are all like brothers And they keep faith with one another So instead I let the night refine me And in time I felt the light define me
Yes, if you let His lantern have the right of way It will lead you to the light of day I could feel the sand beneath my bootheels shift Ev’ry cautious step revealed another gift
Now my lovely wife is like a life preserver I don’t know what I did to deserve her So, now matter how old I grow to be My hope in Him will always say to me
“You’ve got your whole life ahead of you Because ev’ry man is mortal But your faith will pass that portal Don’t despair, the Good Lord shares And you’ve got your whole life ahead of you
When your horizons seem unclear Faith becomes a beautiful frontier Don’t despair, the Good Lord cares And you’ve got your whole life ahead of you You’ve got your whole ahead of you”

Top notch Couch...every bit of it.
One teenie niggle...
...stars are brothers KEEPING faith with one another
flows a bit better for me.
I admire how you express your faith Robert. Oh and a thread above makes me realize I have been privileged to read your writings for just over a quarter century.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

You're right about the flow in that line. Honestly, since I retired from writing several years ago, I've lost a lot of my technique for meter. I'm sort of writing a little.
a little.
25 years??!
