He lay there weepin’ by the riverbed
He’d heard his cousin Rafe was dead

Buckshot holes in a bloody flag

By all those candles on the curb
Left there from that vigil on the corner
Some street preacher on an old milk crate
Helped her fight the emptiness and hate
Sayin’ the Good Lord’d been the saddest mourner

She grabs a tattered Bible and she reads
