Billy Joel, allegedly, never sells front row tickets. Aside from wanting to beat the scalpers, he got tired of all the bored, rich people staring up at him.
So he sends his road crew out to bring down the fans from the worst seats so there will be "people in the front row that are really happy to be there; real fans!"
Brilliant tactics.
Mark Twain would often open for a lecture at theaters with only a few people in attendance.
He would invite them up on stage to sit around a card table, play cards, talk intimately.
