In every 'partnership' is the inherent potential for adversarial tragedy. Witness marriage, where we pledge undying love, until death do us part, and end up adversaries with lawyers. There is the melancholy, uncertainty, in this piece, where I'm not sure where it will land, happy ever after, or still in the throes of uncertainty. That makes it effective to that purpose. It's good to be left wondering, like real life, where certainty is elusive in most things.
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

As I listened to this, one word came into my head,,,,Casablanca???
Creators of music have a responsibility to their craft. When they have finished using all the notes and words, they must pass them down to the next generation with a simple request. “Use these to create new music.â€...Steven McDonald

Well your publisher wouldn't even give you a second listen if you didn't write in your sweet spot...
The descending movements of the piece are gonna bring about the tragic feel...We are who we are...
Plus it's how you learned the piano...You know too much to not get that deep

I'm starting to get accustomed to your almost "random" style, it's a controlled melodic chaos. Nice John

Thanks Steve! Yes, everything we are and learned is incorporated into our music. I still can't get out of my head what one publisher said about my music: "I hear tragedy in everything you compose". Maybe so...I do love melancholy music. Best, John

Yes very nice John. I'm no piano player by any means, but when I do fool around, I play in that long floaty way myslef, not really knowing where to go...so I stay almost exclusively on the white keys, or better yet, on the blacks. My fingers cannot really push a clear melody along so the lets just hit this key on the way up or down approach works nicely
When you can do it as deliberately and precisely as you, it becomes magic...
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

He composed everything in the Key of F# (mostly black keys). Many songs, including Amazing Grace, were composed using only the black keys. Best, John

The black keys are a good group! https://theblackkeys.com/Hey John, sounds interesting. Some of those cringeworthy notes almost sound like you're making a mistake while playing. Lots of dissonance, crazy intervals. Your stuff always sounds like seque music. This sounds like somebody reflecting, and things are happening as thoughts are going through his head.

Hey John.
Last year I didn't make it to this song, then JPF contracted Covid and had a long convalescence as far as getting back online. I was just going back to see where we were about a year ago and listened to this music. Although you write many songs that evoke both melancholy, anguish, or even dark emotions, this one for whatever reason I pictured Robert Redford looking out in a gaze as "Gatsby" pondering his real insecurities when no one was looking..............I thought what the hell, let's bump this'n up since posting is about as slow as a snail slithering up a downspout in January.

Tragedy? Nah.....just that Mahler influence. 😠Possibly Charles, but I've been more influenced by Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Ravel, Chopin, Beethoven .... Yeah, probably Mahler also. I studied the piano works of all of them and also some obscure composers. I just hope there's a smidgen of John Lawrence Schick in my piano works. Best, John

I can't match the eloquence of Gary's comment LOL, but he's right. There's an edginess that would seem to make it a great fit for a certain kind of movie scene where something important is in the balance and could go one of two or more ways. Here's wishing you luck with it, John

I can hear Vincent Price saying, "Yes my darling. You will be with me forever". Another fine atmospheric piece, John.
