This is a Badfinger cover I recorded about four years ago, featuring the fantastic Wade Mosher on slide guitar. It originally was meant to be a collaboration with another fantastic guy, Mike Caro, but we both got a little distracted so I finished it on my own (we have a couple projects like that, but one of these days we'll find that magic moment). I meant to change something or other on it, but then I sort of forgot all about it. Now I can't remember what needed changing, so I might as well bring it into the light. Hope you like it! I like the production but it blasted my ears off. You got that mastered up to the max, I think. If it hadn't already been a hit it could be a hit. Very pro. Vic

Hi Mark ...
You never disappoint, man! I agree with Vic that if this hadn't been a hit previously, this version would have been. Also agree with Mike that the drums could come up a little in the mix.
You're a man of exceptional talent. I've been a fan of yours for about 6 years and have never once been disappointed.
Wishing you well up in ice cold MN!
Alan (and Di)

Absolutely stunning interpretation of that tune. It sounds stellar on my KRK's. Great slide, vocals arrangement -- it's all in the pocket. Thanks for the chance to hear this.

Wow was that loud!!!
Mark a fine reproduction of a great song. Love that slide guitar. My only nit would be it’s exactly like the original, right down to that little piano tinkle. Yeah it showcases your skills both musically and production wise, but where’s your two cents?
Production wise and musically it’s excellent. Probably cleaner than the original.

Vic Thanks Vic...I can do some technical things in the knob-twisting department, but they are not my forte, so I really appreciate your letting me know about the loudness in the mastering. I get confused in that department every single time, and I never know when it's too much or too little compression...my ear gets tricked every time, and I finally just run with it at some point. I will ease it back, because I believe you are right. Thank you!

It was one of the most influential tracks ever for me, and really made me want to do what they do. I will go back and bump up the drums and bump down the overall loudness...thanks for the tip!

Alan (and Di) Alan, you're always such a ray of sunlight. If I ever feel down, all I ever need to do is read one of your posts. Hope you and Di are having a wonderful time. Thank you old friend, and I hope you still pick up that guitar and play it—you have the golden touch!

Production wise and musically it’s excellent. Probably cleaner than the original. Thanks Iggy! You know, I've given a lot of thought to this over the years...most of the covers I do are very faithful to the original. If I were interested in being an artist who markets his recordings for sale, I would definitely "re-interpret" any cover I chose to make sure it had my "brand" stamped all over it. But the fact is, I do covers for a different reason: I want to immerse myself in what my musical heroes did...I want to feel what it felt like to go through all those separate parts. It's like therapy, and it's also a form of self-education. I usually come out of the exercise with a burning desire to write something new, because I get re-inspired by these favorite old tracks. These days there is also another possible benefit...TV/Film cues are often looked for that allow producers to use a familiar song without having to pay mongo bucks for the actual original track, so some of these have a good chance of getting picked up because they ARE close to the original. But most of the time when I get the urge to record a favorite cover, I don't really want to put my own new make-up on the face of a timeless beauty...sometimes it just cheapens it and feels a bit narcissistic to me. I once did a jazz version of Helter Skelter with my daughter, and that was because of the idea itself...but most of the time, I try to re-enact what they did, and it always teaches me something about arrangement and recording. In this case I learned that Leon Russell was a truly skillful session piano player...that touch of his, and those little tinkles, were pure magic...I HAD to do it and feel what that was like. Thanks so much for listening and being honest. I really appreciate it!

Excellent Job, Mark. I like that song a lot and you did a great job on it. My acoustic duo plays a version of it but of course it sounds much different. I saw Joey Molland of Badfinger a few years ago at Hippiefest.....

I saw Joey Molland of Badfinger a few years ago at Hippiefest..... Thanks Colin! Joey Molland lives not far from me, and a good friend of mine knows him well enough that I'm surprised we haven't met yet. Actually I did have a chance to chat with him not long after I recorded this track when he played a local venue, but I didn't feel like walking up and saying "Hey dude, I'm Trent's friend...you know Trent, right? The computer guy who's your neighbor? Well, I'm his friend, and I just totally imitated your biggest hit in my living room...wanna hear it?"

Then again, by all the local accounts, he's a very friendly guy. He might have offered to play on it for all I know...but what would I do if Wade's guitar track sounded better than Joey's?

It's Memorex!
Great job Mark! You could get together a demo of many covers and take them to a top booking agent for your area clubs and do well with a cover band. Get that harmony box too!
