The Modern doom and gloom started with this: And music still hasnt recovered completely from it.

This never "smelled like teen spirit" to me. It's not even the screaming or the non sensical lyrics, thats all rock n roll, but the presentation, and the "element"

I don't find Bruce Springsteen all that interesting. But that's just me. Rise Against year in and year out are normally the highest selling rock tour of the wold. You don't sell out worldwide because you suck. I doubt Bruce Springsteen could sell out in Japan, Germany, Australia. Hey I remember him coming to Ontario like 10 years a go and he only sold out half of the arena.

Rise Against sing about the problems of the world. Not just the US.

I am glad they are singing about these things and so are a lot of people.

Long live Rise Against.

You dont have to Like him. But I would check your numbers there son. Maybe he dont care about Canada, who does?

I know in England and Ireland all Spain he does.

And if you look at top selling tours over last 3 years, you wont see rise against anywhere here. But you will see Bruce

Having said that, I just hate the music they make. it stinks.
Dull, lifeless, meaningless, but then again most stuff today is that way.

God Bless America.....
It gives everybody the chance to say and believe what they want.
Ain't free will great.....we can all just agree to disagree sometimes and the Beautiful Thing about ART is it's in the eye of the beholder. That's why I HATE awards shows....EVERYBODY should get an award who bring any art into the world as it would be a Sad, Black & White Re Run World without us.
I wrote a song called "WHAT IF THE MUSIC DIED"....which deals with this at barrydbutler channel on youtube.

We are a deeply flawed species, we human beings. We depend a lot on hope and luck...but it is our own selves who cause all the trouble being discussed here. Every bad person out there causing our misery is really just acting on the same impulses we all have.

There's only so much you can change about other people. If you want to change the world, you have to change yourself.

This is interesting for a reason I have been reading about.

Scientists believe that human beings dont actually have free will. You could say "well, it was his choice to kill somebody or destroy something" it seems that way because most of us wouldnt do that.

But, scientists believe that our actions are simply the result of our biology, our circuitry, etc. Something in somebodys brain makes them do something, doing it is simply the result.

If that is true. Then nobody is truly guilty of anything, nobody is good or bad, they are just the result of thousands of computations in the brain, and in the body.

It throws a wrench in many of our belief systems, but some of it just appears to be true.

How come some kids, no matter how much love and support they get at home, go on to be violent criminals. Or regardless of how good of people their parents are, their kids just dont turn out right.

it's the way they are wired. Maybe there is no such thing as "good" kids, they are just born that way.

“If that is true. Then nobody is truly guilty of anything, nobody is good or bad, they are just the result of thousands of computations in the brain, and in the body”

This is the political nonsense that’s been progressing rapidly in the World. Everyone needs to be held responsible for their actions. No excuses.

I make hundreds of free-will decisions every day. Should I have chicken for supper or pizza? Should I compose a waltz today or a fugue? Should I go for a walk or sit in a chair and relax? Should I mow the lawn today? Read a book? Watch a movie? Punch my neighbor in the nose? Etc.......

IT SEEMS OBVIOUS to me that I have free will. When I have just made a decision, say, to go to a concert, I feel that I could have chosen to do something else. Yet many philosophers say this instinct is wrong. According to their view, free will is a figment of our imagination. No one has it or ever will. Rather our choices are either determined—necessary outcomes of the events that have happened in the past—or they are random.

Good Lord,
Some Jehovah's witnesses stopped by my house a few days ago. The Theme of the week was, Why do bad things happen to good people? Gee, they must have known this post was happening! When asked, I replied, Because that is the way it is supposed to be. Some think there is order in the Universe and others think there is chaos.

Well I can tell you there is order in the universe. I have tried the free will route. So far not one person has recorded any of my songs! Free Will? There is none. Just think, you could just will up whatever you wanted!

We're all being screwed. That is another subject!

If only bad things happened to good people, then there would be no good people left to see it.

Things happen, or as the bumper sticker says "Shtt happens"

I believe in some higher power, Im not sure what it is, but it's clearly not a "God please help me" kind of thing.

When you see a guy falling from a ladder and dying, while working on a Church building, you have to wonder. Or that Priest dying while climbing Mt Everest.

Random things happen. Randomness rules the world, unfortunately.

Maybe when we die we avoid the randomness, since we are no longer subject to the physics of the universe.

I DONT KNOW!

"Free Will? There is none. Just think, you could just will up whatever you wanted!" - Ben

Free will only applies to your actions Ben. You're free in deciding how to market your songs. And the publishers are free to publish or not publish. The consumers are free to purchase or not purchase. Etc….

customers choice to buy is not free will either.

Their decision to buy is based on previous purchases, the style of music they like, the income they have.

If they happen to tumble over to the country section, and break their fall on Ray's Cd, and decide to buy it, that was a random event

It most certainly is Bugsey. Whether or not it's an objective choice or an irrational choice - it's still a free choice.

it's philosophical of course, but if you inherit the personality of somebody who expects everything for free, you will not buy ANYTHING.

What Im saying is, everything we do, is a result of who we are, and how our brain functions, and how we intepret the outside world.

Some people are rotten to the core, ie Hitler, Bin Laden, they didnt choose to be like that, their wiring did.

Our actions are just results of the brain firing off and saying "do this"

We might have choices, or options, but some people are incapable of making the right choice. An mind you, the "right" choice is merely what a majority of people deem as right.

Ask 100 serial killers if killing lots of people is good, they wont say so no, even if they say no, they cant help themselves

Free will means I CAN BE Kind today or NOT.
I can choose to Listen More than Talk.
AND I can choose to be Pro LIFE rather than Pro Choice.
I have changed MY Mind on some rather Important Issues in my life and am Proud of those decisions. Free Will means we ARE NOT or DON'T HAVE TO BE...STUCK OR WEDDED TO AN IDEOLOGY...we can change our minds.....
Has ANYBODY HERE changed their minds on a Very Substantial Issue....even though you may have a few friends get upset with you.
When I told my rather Liberal BUT VERY Smart man that I had a change of heart on this issue HE was sort of angry at me.
What's up with that. We are Human Beings with Free Will NOT A ROCK...BUT I must say that some people are DUMB AS ROCKS.....and even can give rocks a bad name....lol

Sorry to those who responded as I didn't have time to read them on this one. But I did want to respond to Barry...

Sure, Barry, everything you said was true. But tilting at windmills does nothing. Writing songs about the issue is only SELF serving unless people are CLAMORING for what you have to say in them and as far as I am aware, that is not the case and not likely as the quantity outweighs the need a million to one or perhaps 100 million to one when it comes to lyrics.

Until you get out of your house, into the community and make real human direct connections, you can't make any difference. Not from your platform on the computer until you build a very large following and even then you have a headline at most to capture attention and then a few lines to keep them reading. Good luck with that approach too.

So what CAN you do? I don't know you, but if you are competent enough to go and play for little kids, that is always an easy door to go through. Sing songs that are engaging to little kids and also have a broad and easy message to understand about right and wrong (not adult topics, but just knowing what is right and doing what is right). We currently live in a society where there is no real punishment for crime on any level. Murder, cold blooded and pointless, often gets single digit years in prison. Other crimes get little or no prison time. Things like shoplifting do not result in ANY punishment even if someone is caught on video and arrested on the spot (they won't be pursued if they get out the door by police 99 percent of the time and never by employees in or out of the store so it is fair game to steal whatever you want. And the police do not bother because the retailers will not press charges. 10% theft is simply the new cost of business. It used to be 1% or less, but new day, new lower standards and truth is that employees, who see how easy it is, steal far more than customers do so most security at stores is actually set up to monitor employees. They don't press charges or even try to catch customer theft. And they fire any employee who tries to stop them. Sad fact but necessary. Lawsuits from 100% guilty thieves scare companies far more than the theft itself.

For kids, you either already have more (in North America) than 99% of the rest of the world so you're fat and happy, OR if you happen to be among the most underprivileged people or just bored kids who want to take something before their parents can buy it for them, you can steal all you want and all your friends do it so you're a chump if you don't join them.

We're SOOOOO lucky to live in this crumbling society, because as quickly as it is devolving, it is STILL by far the best level of wealth and options in human history even among our poor. Anyone not "poor" in the USA (and other thriving Western countries, you know who I am talking about) live better than anyone else, as a mass, in the history of the world. Most serious crime is based on BIG money pawns in the drug turf wars. But really it is just an excuse for aggressive bored boys going through macho phases where parents don't exist literally or in practice (or are more corrupt than their kids anyway) and so they act like tough guys, where prison is a right of passage and not a deterrent at all for most.

So... back to you. What are YOU going to do about it? Making music is a totally SELF INTEREST activity. You make music because you must and anyone saying they are doing it for others as if people are lined up begging for it are crazy. It's not true. NO ONE has that ROCK STAR appeal anymore. They don't want to know what a superstar musician thinks about things, they want to know what jeans they wear.

You can also get involved by finding a single LOCAL problem and learning about it and coming up with a solution that you can work hard to deliver. THAT will make a difference. Little else will. It's just bloviating to almost no one because almost no one is listening. You must show them through personal action and often even without them following you, you must do the work anyway and see the project through and hope that your instinct that it was a problem that needed to be solved was correct and you've made things better rather than worse.

Or you can rant on a message board. How's that going towards solving any of the world's problems?

It's worse than that, we're also being poisoned with pesticides, growth hormones, GMOs, etc.
