Decided to sit down and knock out an acoustic version of Justin Timberlake's new single "Not A Bad Thing". Don't watch if you're sensitive to a 4 letter word that begins with F.

Hey Jody, I'm not familiar with Justin's music, but I know you did it justice (so to speak). One thing I did notice though..man you've got some long fingers like Robert Johnson had. I mean this as a compliment. You can rule the fret board.

Ha ha ha, thanks Ben. Yes, I do have very long fingers. Must be due to my height (6'4"). You should check out the original version by Justin, it's really good.

Jody, this simply proves what I have long told you, when you sing a song with solid commercial formatting and lyrics, you sound radio ready. That's what is so exciting about your work of the past few years as you've blended your eclectic stylings and some commercial instincts.
The song itself doesn't do a lot for me in that it's a bit repetitive musically, and the guitar progression drones on by the end, but that isn't your fault. Glad to hear you're doing videos for each of your new songs. Seeing this reminds me of all the years out on the road hearing you guys do songs in an intimate setting.. man I miss doing that... but it is so hard to get a room full of people together, in person, to do ANYTHING these days. Social networking, in my opinion, with all of its positives, have actually driven a bigger wedge between people with technology making it too easy to just stay apart and from afar.

Thanks Brian. I think the repetitive nature is a bit par for the course with a lot of recent pop songs. The interest generally comes from the arrangement these days, with tons and tons of sound layering. Personally, I watched a bunch of people on YouTube cover this song, none of them did anything that really showcased the original progression of the song. Thus, my take on it was to retune the guitar to make it possible to play several of the more key figures in the song without it becoming a guitar driven instrumental.
As for my upcoming songs, I figured since I'm going single by single, I have to make each one as awesome as possible. Then do a video that fits it appropriately. So far this first one is getting a lot of raves from the select group that have heard it. The director of the video is raving how much he likes the footage. Can't wait to see the finished product as it was a lot of fun to shoot.
Social media certainly has drawn a lot more noise into everyone's lives. It's impossible to keep up with all the updates from everyone. Which is partially why I'm releasing all these upcoming songs as singles. So I can make more noise more often. Pushing a whole a CD now is rather pointless in my mind.
As for the cover video - I finally figured out how to record/video it and make sure it's a great live recording. It took several attempts to come up with a winning combination. So future cover and acoustic videos in a setting like this, will be on par. :-)
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I appreciate it.
