Mike Leblanc has great imagination and ideas for songs. He sent me this idea a few days ago. There is an hibiscus flower of this name which changes colour through the day from white to red and then dies. Legend says it soaked up the blood of dying soldiers during the US civil war. The original lyric has changed drastically but Mike's original idea is still there. Another one for the history theme CD. I'd love to hear a fiddle on it (sigh). NOW ADDED. Thanks to Floyd Jane. SEE LINKWould be nice to hear what you all think? Vic Listen here: hi fi Soundcloud http://snd.sc/17ZHZDPhi fi WITH FIDDLE http://snd.sc/1c5lTUZlo fi Soundclick http://sclk.co/s7hordConfederate Rose V1 In a corner of this battlefield a pretty flower shines My eyes are drawn from shot and shell that pounds our staggering lines I see the rifle aimed at me between the blossoms fair We fire together him and I and close our eyes in prayer V2 The battle rages through the day. We cause the foe to run. We catch our breath and walk around to see what we have done. I come across the hedge of flowers splashed with crimson stain The young boys eyes are closed. He'll never open them again. Ch. Confederate rose changes her clothes and turns from white to red. She soaks up the blood that runs like a flood Through this valley of the dead Inst. as verse 2 lines V3 The autumn comes around again and to this valley, I Now gold and yellow leaves have covered where that young man died I place a white bloom on his grave and pay the tribute due to my brother who was dressed in grey when I was dressed in blue Br. Mama died of broken heart but forgave me I suppose. And Daddy still tends the garden and that old confederate rose. Ch. Confederate rose changes her clothes and turns from white to red. She soaks up the blood that runs like a flood Through this valley of the dead Tag She forgives me I suppose, and you confederate rose. Copyright 2013 Vic Arnold & Michael Leblanc

Vic/Mike,
Beautiful music and co-write, really tugs on one's heartstrings. These lyrics kept me rivoted with this tragic story.
I wouldn't mind hearing a little "pause & go" to better launch the Bridge--without following the lyrics it may not stand out as it should--I like it's melody and lyric substance with the Bridge--just needs a slight little "power injection."
One other alternative small lyric sug that may or may not be any better--at the last line in verse 3, I was thinking that saying that line as so: "to my brother who was dressed in grey, AND I, was dressed in blue." In my mind, "AND" emphasizes the "connection" between the two soldiers more strongly. Either will work--an idea to "use or lose."
I truly enjoyed this one guys!

Agreed.....throw in that fiddle (or mouth harp)....well done, well written...and the vocals provide a sense of historical provenance that is perfect for this song. Well done, you two!!

Geez, man! I've been busy! You guys both did a great job on this. A terrific story song with a good "singing" chorus (a lot of story songs lack that). The prefect vocal to carry the story, too. Enjoyable, start to finish. floyd

I love the lyrics, but i think the music is kind of sing songy for a serious subject. Sounds more like a love song to somebody named confederate rose, not a homage.
All about prosody, but you guys could make a good writing team.
Keep at it!

Hey Vic and Michael,
Yeah, it's all working for a work tape. Especially like the non judgemental theme about war itself, and the focus upon healing.
Technically ? it's all fine production/EQ wise, but needs musical phrasing, especially with the drum phrasing. Builds, lifts and die backs would help it in it's delivery. Likewise for the vocal line as well. It's all sounding a bit "flat" in the delivery. Easy fixed.
With some thought to arrangement and vocal presence, it will come up well. An enjoyable listen from me.
cheers, niteshift

Thanks for tuning in Niteshift. Yes, drum loops do need a bit more work. I'll take another look at the vocal although I don't want too many dynamics in the arrangement. Vic

Tammy. Thank you for listening and glad you liked it. Never thought of them as war songs, though. More of a reflection on times of great sacrifice, sorrow and hardship. Vic

Hi guys, this is really gorgeous. I agree with Ed that the bridge could stand out more...to really polish it up and make it more poignant.
