https://soundcloud.com/steady-eddie/daddys-girl-w-carlee-added?(10/10/24 UPDATE) -- I posted this song 10 years ago here. It was a song that I wrote just goofing around and thinking about a "stage production" song. I'm digging deep into the JPF achives here, but thought it might be fun to bring this back as well as see some of the old comments etc. On the earliest post, I sang both parts which is why some of the comments joked about that before I had recorded my daughter singing the girl's part). My daughter is now 24 years of age who did kind of inspire this song as she becoming a young teen at that time and I knew what was coming--yikes! UPDATE: 10/21/13 I FINALLY GOT MY DAUGHTER, CARLEE, TO "SING." SHE WAS APPREHENSIVE, AS THIS WAS HER FIRST TIME BEHIND A MICROPHONE SERIOUSLY. CARLEE IS 14 YEARS OF AGE, AND HER VOICE MIGHT SOUNG A BIT TOO YOUNG FOR THIS CHARACTER--BUT I'M PROUD OF HER AND THINK SHE DID A NICE JOB. I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE HER INSERT A BIT MORE CHARACTER EMOTION PERHAPS SINCE THIS IS REALLY A "STAGE" TYPE NUMBER. I MAY HAVE HER RECORD THIS NEXT YEAR, JUST TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN HER VOCAL GROWTH, BUT WILL ALLWAYS TREASURE HER FIRST RECORDING!This is a "fun" song that I wrote mimicking the late 50's/ early/ 60's music and "time era" with the song idea written for a "Father/Daughter scenario" about a young girl's first date. Of course the Father is apprehensive about seeing his daughter enter the "world of romance" and the potential heartaches, and is ambivalent. Daddy's Girl DAD: Sweetheart I, love you more than I can say, you know I'm only asking for you to take things slow-o-ow Young love is fragile this I know GIRL: Daddy dear, I know you mean well, but, he's so sincere He'll never leave me in a thousand years I can see it in his eyes DAD: Believe me girl, I'm not try'n to rain on your parade I guess you could say that I am afraid I know how broken hearts are made GIRL: Daddy dear, I'll be sixteen in a week or two Can't you see that I'm a woman too? Won't you look into my eyes? DAD: Darling girl, when I look into your eyes I see You're Mother when she was about twenty That's why I know he'll wait for you GIRL: Daddy please, I can't think of anything, but him Won't you reconsider, let him in You know he is a lot like you (Bridge) It seems like yesterday, in the leaves we played Birthday parties and roller skates, now you tell me That you want to date! (Saxophone solo) (Repeat 1st vs). (Dad & Girl parts "both" together) Dad-Girl: (Conversation ending song)

Hey Eddie,
I LOVED this. Any father who has a daughter can relate very well to these lyrics. The music was so well done and I loved the sax. The staggered last verse with dad and daughter singing together was awesome as was the speaking parts at the end. I really love everything about this song. Very well done. By the way your vocals sound great, including the daughter part, though I cannot wait to hear a version actually sung by your daughter. I think that would be brilliant. Kudos. No nits from me. My favorite that I have heard from you. You NAILED the 50's groove btw. Congrats.

Hi Eddie, Very nicely done, smooth and cool. We have 2 daughters so I certainly like this one. But even IF we didn't have em I'd like it. Calvin http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewart

Hi Eddie,
This is as CUTE as can be! It's sweet and tender and loving and caring and so...human, in the finest sense!
One thing -- as I was listening, I was remembering back to when I was 16, and I remembered my friends and I counting down the hours, minutes, seconds the year we turned 16. So the fact that she said she's going to be 16 in a "week or two" -- that stood out for me, because when she's that close, I think she'd know if it's a week or two away. I thought maybe something like, "I'll be 16, so trust me like you always do." I don't know -- something like that!
This is really adorable, and I was surprised at how well you sung the girl part! Not that I didn't always have faith that you could sing a female lead, and not that you sounded like a girl at all -- but your inflections were really good and you pulled it off so we could enjoy the song with you as the "fill-in!"

Hi Lisa!
Good to hear from you. I had an older sister and remember her going through that period which wasn't pleasant for my dad. Of course now I have a 14 year old--yikes!
My thought on that line you mentioned was teens always think they're more grown up than they really are, and she's just now entering the area of her life where "trust" becomes more of an issue--that's why she's saying, "look at me! I'm not a little girl anymore. Dad knows, yet is reluctant to see or accept this fact.
I've enjoyed being involved with community theatre for many years--so there is a little "ham" in me Lisa--"ok, where are those lavender slacks.........!" (Not) Thanks for checking this one out.

Thanks man, and for that remark that made me laugh. I was a bit reluctant to post me singing this, but said what the heck, it's still a work in progress.

Erm - my daughter will turn 16 in a few weeks - LOL! :-)) (BTW, she sings a lot and much better than her father ;-)
Well, as a father I can relate to this song (and this type of conversation) VERY well. Lyrics are perfect for me ("I'm not tryin' to rain on your parade", "I'll be 16 in a week or two" or "Seems like yesterday, in the leaves we played" - and the final dialog - great!). The idea to have this as a duet is good and if your goal was to mimic the early 60ies the musical performance works very well, too. Personally, I think this period is a good choice for carrying the light and funny tone of the song (it wouldn't make a good dubstep-title ;-)

Sounds good Eddie! I like the new saxophone parts. I have a friend here who just went through this phase with his daughter so can relate. The song is well thought out as a duet and you do a stellar job of playing and singing....brought out the woman in you nicely. If C won't sing her part, there are a couple of young gals on JPF who could probably do it well.

Way cool. After raising two girls I totally related. Loved the feel and the sax. At first I thought I was hearing that song Stay…just a little bit longer. Same chord pattern, but then you went and made it your own. Very nice.

Hey Doug,
Being a fan of yours, if I made you laugh and entertained you a bit--then it was worth embarrassing myself a little! Thanks!
Iggy,
I appreciate you taken a listen and love your music. I'm sure there were quite a few songs in that time period with that chord structure. The sax player "Swanee" plays a lot of "Du-Wap,' so this was right up his alley. My daughter's fourteen and a little less innocent than the girl in this song I'm sure--but not in a bad way, just a different era--but I sure can relate already!

Hi Eddie,
I love this track! You definitely nailed the 50's groove, especially with the sax part!
Just one suggestion - for some reason, this sounds like this is asking a chorus - maybe something that will somehow change meaning and perspective as the song goes on, maybe a play with "Daddy's Girl"?
Nice work!

Hey Karen!
Thanks for checking out the song! Most of my songs do have a choruses; this one doesn't as I wrote it for a Demo "Show-Tune" example for a "music number for a specific scene," and not a chorus number within a show. The "dialog" as is, is already close to 4 minutes and there just isn't time for a one chorus, not to mention two or three. The Bridge offers the only break which also is the dad's reflecting thoughts as well. I could create a chorus and have it inherent within the story but felt this tender scene between Dad & Daughter needed to be kept more personal. No question, musically what you are saying would work however, and I thank you for your thoughts!

Hi Eddie,
Liking this a lot! Di and I write and record a lot of music set in the 60's. It was a great era for music.
Loved the song and the performance. Great job! My daughter is 41 but she was once 16...as best as I can remember! Loved my listen!

Al,
Great to see you back in the forum, it's been awhile. Thanks for the spin--I really liked that era of music as well. I could have a daughter 41, but got married later in life, and got a little "frisky" when I was 46!

Great job Ed!

Way cool, Eddie. Carlee has a nice voice for her age especially. Maybe a slight bit of reverb on her voice would fill it out more but that's just a suggestion to KOS. Nice job you two.

Back for another listen! Carlee sounds super...has a lot of her Dad's talent! I agree with Syevie that a touch of reverb would add a touch of warmth andc gentle fullness too her voice. But this is super as is! Enjoyed it twice as much second time around!

Well done you two! Carlee sounds the right age to me. As mentioned above, a bump in the reverb when she sings, but not when she speaks might be good. The sax is excellent.

Al, Vic,
Thanks for coming back around Al,(added some reverb to Carlee vox singing, removed a tad with speaking part-per Colin's sug).
I'm always thrilled to hear from my cowboy friend from Wales! Thanks Vic! That era you describe is exactly what I was trying to convey--I had aspirations of writing a musical production about a Father/Daughter relationship someday--but real work and life seems to always get in the way of dreams ehh? Thanks!

Hey Eddie,
I am loving this. As I said earlier, it is my favorite of yours and now with Carlee's addition it is even better. She did a great job. It is a favorite of mine on Soundcloud. Carlee's spoken parts tells me she is likely a mighty fine actress as well.

I am glad your daughter did the duet with you. I know at that age it is hard to get them to agree to do much...sounds nice!!!!

Dave, Thanks much, I'll share these thoughts with Carlee as well. She has been in the chorus in several musical productions--I'd think she could handle a larger role, no question.
Kim, Yes I'm so glad to get rid of my "sissy female vocal interpretation" on this one! You are right about kids her age being, shall we say "difficult at times?"
Thanks, guys!

Travis, -- sorry about getting you out of order with Kim--"ladies first ehh? Thanks for your listen from the "Mother Country!"
Calvin, I always appreciate your ears around here! Everyone's support with Carlee will hopefully motivate her! Thanks!
