Steady, moving country swing rhythm. Not too fast, not too slow.

Late summer back in '76
Me and Grandpa were out in the sticks
Picking up crickets on the way to the lake
We were heading out fishing for a weekend break.

I should've been happy
But I wanted to cry
Knowin' my mama was hurtin' inside
Something that the doctors didn't know how to cure
They thought they knew the problem
But they really weren't sure

I was just 11, with a brave face on
Doing my best to be the perfect son
Keep to myself and staying out of the way
Then in the truck I heard Grandpa say:

CHORUS
A penny for your thoughts
A nickel for your time
If you need a shoulder
You can borrow one of mine.
I know you've got some troubles
I can see 'em in your eyes.
But everything's gonna be just fine.

Sometimes life is hard
But the Good Lord knows wherever you are.
And He knows what to do
I reckon that's why
He found me a friend like you.

VERSE
I was starting college when mama went home
I couldn't help feeling I was all alone
Then a knock on my door got me out of my chair
Imagine my surprise to find Grandpa there
(He said smile

CHORUS

BRIDGE
When Grandpa left this world behind
My son took it pretty hard
I found him with his head hung low
Out in our back yard
(I said smile

CHORUS

REPEAT CHORUS
(I'll give you smile
A penny for your thoughts...
