I am working on the melody and music for this song for those of us over forty.

Those Were the Good Old Days
Doug Buche, 2012

1st Verse:

The house that I grew up in had a telephone on the wall.

Our black and white television set had a picture that was so small.

We had to take turns watching it, cause there was not enough room,

To all watch Howdy Doody, at the same time, or those Micky Mouse cartoons.

2nd Verse:

The air was conditioned by a propeller fan. That thing blew so hard.

You had to be careful when you were around it, not to put your fingers through the guard.

Dad's car had a stick shift on the column and buttons that were not marked.

No CD player, just an old radio. that played best when the car was parked.

Chorus:

Yep those were the good old days with the good old ways,

That made me what I am.

A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.

3rd Verse:

Seemed like all my Uncles one by one, made it back from overseas.

From places in Europe or the South Pacific where they had gone to fight for peace.

But they didn't brag, didn't talk about it. At least not much out loud.

But we all knew it was serious, and that they served their country proud.

4th Verse:

I remember that mothers of that time hardly ever drank or ever smoked.

You'd see them wearing flowered aprons. Stirring something on the stove.

They were stay at home Moms, cause they had a lot of kids.

And staying home and taking care of them. That's what Mothers did.

Chorus:

Yep those were the good old days with the good old ways,

That made me what I am.

A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.

Bridge:

If I could go back in time - -

I would look them all up and give them all a hug.

But time is like a tug boat and it's giving me a tug.

It's pulling me a direction, I'm not sure I want to go.

My engine is slowing down, and it's pulling real slow.

Time to stop talking about walking to school 12 miles through the snow.

Chorus and end:

But those were the good old days with the good old ways,

That made me what I am.

A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.
