As far as books I would highly recommend "Mixing With Your Mind" by Michael Paul Stavrou and "Mastering Audio" by Bob Katz.
Mixing With Your Mind is a fun read with tons of great common sense and unconventional ideas for recording and mixing.
Mastering Audio is a little more technical, but a must read for anyone interested in mastering.
