Hi Linda I think that the problems are more down to you not having the experience to use the equipment to its best rather than flawed equipment. By all means spend a lot of money on upgrading to a more professional music production program. That said these progs require skills you may not have yet....they tend to be very complicated to use and have a steep learning curve.....probably will cause you more probs than they cure.
I would concentrate on getting to know what you have and how to use it best......there are tutorials on Audacity and these are very helpful for beginners.....just google.
Keep at it these things take time to learn and you will make many mistakes before you make anything.
