I recently acquired Luna Guitars’ Pandora 12 string model. It is a solid body electric. After having it and playing a few gigs with it, I thought I’d pass along my thoughts on this great instrument.

The first thing you notice about the Luna Pandora 12 is the weight. It is incredibly light, especially for a 12 string. In fact, my first question was “what is this MADE of?” The wood is Paulonia - I believe that’s spelled right. It’s a very lightweight wood, but doesn’t grow tall
enough to be farmed for lumber. According to legend, it’s the only tree that the Phoenix will build its nest in. Makes no difference to guitars....or then again, who knows? The wood is so resonate that you can hear it clearly unplugged - nice for practicing when the household is asleep.

The second thing that I noticed is the neck. I’ve said before on this forum that I own and play an Ovation 1866, which I love, in part because of the neck (and I haven’t changed my mind about that)! The Luna neck is smaller in width and thickness, making it even easier for my small hands. The string spacing and action “out of the box” is very, very good.

The tone is wonderfully rich and fat. It’s a unique sound - while it has the “ring” of a 12 string, it doesn’t “jangle” because the harmonics blend so smoothly. It is an extremely homogenous sound, and is big and beautiful. It sounds clean and rich on a clean channel, and heavy and fat on
a distortion channel. It is a different sound from an acoustic 12 string. I’ve been having lots of fun with it, and it didn’t cost nearly as much as the Ovation, so I can bring it to smoky gigs without worry.

I visited the Luna booth at the summer
NAMM show and played several of their instruments. I was impressed with the guitars, the company, and the value. Their Athena model, a hollow-body electric, won the Best of Show award, so I wasn’t the only one impressed! Their website is www.LunaGuitars.com.
