Davey, clawhammer style is also known as frailing or rapping the banjo. The right hand fingers are bent and the hand moves down toward the skin of the banjo. The nail of the first and/or second finger brushes the string. Usually the hand continues down until the skin is hit percussively. Normally, every other "hit" the right thumb catches the fifth string on the way up. The result is a "bump ta da, bump ta da" rhythm.

This style was associated with Grandpa Jones. I play a little frailing banjo myself and have been a casual listener of the style. Vinnie is the best I've heard.
