John Daubert
"New Yesterdays"
(Daubert & Holcombe Songs)

I listened to several songs off this page trying to find the one I wanted to review. What I found was a whole lot of Lennon influence for sure.

I finally settled on “Cannot Pretend”
Again the Lennon influence is strong in the structure and arrangement of this acoustic piece. Though there is a moment where Jimmy Buffet sneaks in and we get a nice little xylophone break.

Performance is pretty strong and the tune has some potential but the production is painful. While the signals are strong the mixes are mid heavy and the vocals and base drum are way forward in the mix. There is some stereo separation with sounds panned here and there but more distance and less reverb could really help tighten this one up.

Overall working with a good producer to help with the final mix downs and mastering could help all this material a lot. The concepts behind the songs are good and have a lot of popular potential. With the exception of the drums, which, falter a time or two the musicianship of the performers is solid throughout.
