Songs need to be grasped in a listen or two or there is something wrong with the song.
There is nothing wrong with this song.

If you can't get a handle on repetitive lyrics in a couple of verses and a chorus, then that is an issue with your comprehension, not this song.
These lyrics are nicely written and manicured.
I wish that I had written them.

I'm not going to enter into an inane back-and-forth and round-and-round with you on something as simple, obvious and inarguably factual as what I just stated.
.

But it's ok for you to challenge Gavin's statement?

The lyrics are undeterminable listening

It sounded vaguely like a desperate lovers Lyric, not a war heros lament

The verse says nothing other than vague references

There’s a church with a cross on top of the hill.
It’s a symbol for all to see.
A reminder to him of what he’s become.
A part of who he used to be.
There’s a girl he promised his undying love
Still waiting for him to come home.
She’s wondering that if or when he comes back
Will he be the man she’s known.

I heard none of that and neither did you .

Songs are meant to be heard, but when you can't hear the lyrics how are you judging it well written?
