2007 Sacramento Community Women of Color Day/Diversity Event (by SuzanneBrooks)
The 9th annual Sacramento Community Women of Color Day/Diversity Event will be held March 4, 2007, 4 to 8 pm at the Ben Ali Shrine, 3262 Marysville Blvd. Sacramento. The 2007 program theme, "The Impulse to Soar," which is drawn from words of Helen Keller, emphasizes achievements despite disabilities, medical challenges or other barriers.
The event includes an award ceremony at which outstanding women of color will be honored. The program also recognizes men, women and organizations who support diversity. 2007 Honorees are: Vicky Atay, Hula Dancer; Essie Gilchrist, former president, Stockton African American Chamber of Commerce; Miriam Estrada, Artist; Sabrina Hocker, Singer/, African Americans for Balanced Health; Sandy Lynch, Warrant Officer, California National Guard/served in Iraq; Lula Massey, Gospel Singer; Elizabeth Ramos, High School Achiever; Sarah Richey, Community Activist/Women’s Civic Improvement Association; Betty Williams, President, Sacramento NAACP, Susan Jim, Native American Activist, and SISTAS—Vacaville Women of Color Organization co-chairs Cheryl Gaines and Viola Cooper. Recognition will be given Dennis Yep, Artistic Director, Interactive Asian Contemporary Theatre and the Chicano Consortium. The Affirmative Action Register, with a readership of 3.5 million, will be recognized for 32 years promoting fair employment and as the first National Sponsor of Women of Color Day.
For the first time, 2 posthumous awards will also be made--to Marie Fielder and Maya Miller. Marie Fielder, Berkeley, CA. PhD’60, pioneering educator and founding board member of Fielding Institute, was the first African-American woman with a doctorate to teach in the Bay Area, died May 17, 2002. She was 85 & one of the first researchers to prove cultural bias in IQ tests.
Maya Miller, philanthropist, championed women's rights & many environmental and progressive causes for decades, died May, 2006, in Nevada. She was 90. Miller donated millions.
Ruby Duncan, Human Rights Activist of Las Vegas, Nevada, who is the subject of the book, Storming Caesar’s Palace, and close friend of Maya Miller will attend. The International Association for Women of Color Day will coordinate the event. Local ensemble, The Jazz Generation—Suzanne Brooks, vocals; Chris Lee, keyboard; Gabe Stivala, guitar; Kim Nguyen, bass and flute; Mark MacDonald, guitar; and Dominick Porras will perform. Andrea Porras, who performed with The Jazz Generation in "Great Women of Jazz will dance. "Al Bailey, Roseville singer, will also perform. A reception with refreshments follows the award ceremony.
The Sacramento Community Women of Color Day/Diversity Event is supported by the sales of ads in the program booklet, exhibitor/vendor tables and tickets. Supporters are still needed to advertise/exhibit products and services, to contribute ads congratulating honorees and to purchase tickets.
Tickets go on sale January 15, 2007: $10 in advance; $15 at the door. Visa/Mastercard accepted in phone, fax and email orders.
International Women of Color Day--March 1st annually—is in its 21st year in 2007. More info is at http://www.womenofcolorday.com. Women of Color Day has been celebrated in 20 states & 6 countries. This event is funded in part by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.
