Guys and Girls This is a 1+1 song I finished a little while ago but have been too busy to do anything with it since. It won the 1+1 comp on the Muse a few months ago and I do not want to change this version now but want to learn from this for the next one :-) Ian Ferrin took my piano track and made it something very special. I hope you enjoy and thanks Ian, I am not sure if you have heard this but thank you. Sarah Mary Ann I know that a life Is there for living How we abuse The time we're given I'm not that girl I remember very well There were things that I'd never do Oh my name is Mary Ann From the opposite side of town My name is Mary, Mary Ann It's one week and a day Since I took those thoughts away And found Mary Ann I won't pretend Of that I am certain I am not someone Who craves attention The scars that I hide Constantly remind me of the things I thought I'd never do Oh my name is Mary Ann From the opposite side of town My name is Mary, Mary Ann It's one week and a day Since I took those thoughts away And found Mary Ann You have helped me overcome To forgive the things I have done To forget who I'd become Oh my name is Mary Ann From the opposite side of town My name is Mary, Mary Ann It's one week and a day Since I took those thoughts away And found Mary Ann It's one week and a day You took my thoughts away Now I've found Mary Ann I've found Mary Ann I've found Mary Ann

hello Sarah This is a beautiful song and you have a lovely voice to match.
With Ian sprinkling his magic across it... you can't go wrong.
Well Done

This is really, really nice. I love the voice too. If it was my song I would change "Opposite side of town" to "Other side of town". Vic

Sarah, You've got a good voice and Ian did you right with that piano backing. There's a nice cadence and rhythm going on in the lyrics . They're pretty obscure and introspective, but that may be what you set out to make them. The main thing is to keep writing and making progress finding your own voice.

Sarah, got to tell you, I can see why you won--it's a beautiful song and well written. I love your vocal tone and the passion you bring to the song. At this point, you said you were seeking advice for future work; I have some for you--continue doing what you are doing! No nits from me today. Besides, different songs always bring new challenges and many times take you into a totally different production process--just follow your instincts and don't take what we say too seriously. I like the exclusive piano track, it may be interesting hearing a subtle "string quartet" with this song for comparison, both versions would probably sound good. Alone with the piano is cool though. Kimberly Kime and I are working on song with a very similar production with just piano with a few strings.
Good luck to you and the song,
steady-eddie.

Sarah,
Very nice. I think I heard this before but Ian's piano is spectacular. My two cent is the same as Vic's. Opposite does not fit well there. I also think the chorus could be stronger in some places. Some of the lines and the way you sing them in the chorus are absolutely brilliant and I felt there were a few places lacking that special touch you have. Really nice emotion in the vocal though! You have a ton of talent.

Beautiful, expressive voice, Sarah. Pretty tune too. Ian did a great job on the piano setting the mood. One to be proud of.

That sounds great.....vox and piano. Congrats to both of you. You have one of those voices that would sound good singing the phone book.
Interesting lyrics that leave us to fill in the details a bit and that's OK. No nits here.
I wonder if you know Rowland "Miggi" Middleton who is a singer friend from Portsmouth.

Sarah,
You have a very pleasing voice. This song could make it in a Broadway musical.

Vic thanks for your comments. I agree about the use of the word "opposite". "other side of town" would sound better :-

Eddie, strings would certainly compliment this song. I kept it with just one instrument for the competition but you could take this song in several directions. I am getting a cello for Christmas and may have a play.
I know Kim well.. she is a fine lyricist. We have collaborated a few times. I would be very interested in hearing what you both come up with. Good luck and thanks for your comments

Thanks Ricky for your kind words. I would love to improve the chorus but no matter how else I performed it, I couldn't make it better. I just ended up settling for it in the end. I find the more I play with something the less natural it sounds... :-)

Thanks Stevie, it amazes me at how quick Ian can record something that sounds very difficult to play :-)

Sarah, very nice to meet you! This is a beautiful recording!! I would just like a little more clarification as to what happened to cause this song to be? Abuse, divorce, ??? Maybe just a hint in a tag or something? Very, very well done though.. you have a beautiful voice! :))))) scotty

"The standard by which I now measure the things in my life is the following: If I was on my death bed, or if I knew I had a short time to live, would this issue be important? If the answer is no.. I don't sweat it at all. If the answer is Yes, you better believe it goes to the front of the order of today's business!" -Brian Austin Whitney
