My first complete effort of 2012. Not looking to start any religious wars, just providing a personal perspective. Don't be shy.
Maybe Some Pray © 2012 Greg C. Brown
Tornado touched down on the outskirts of town, Devastating everyone and everything around. A hundred souls died, but a thousand more survived, Everybody thanking God that they're still alive.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored.
A lady I know said it couldn't be so, Your Jesus is a myth and your bible is a joke. With a cynical eye she said it's all a big lie. What kind of God would let some live and some die?
CHORUS Maybe some pray just a little bit harder, Maybe the others never pray enough.. Maybe God had a tough choice to make, Or maybe it wasn't that tough. Maybe some pray that they might be forgiven, For their sins and the ways they went wrong. Suppose when we reach the end of the line We find we were right all along?
In the sanctuary I've got no worries, It's where I find comfort, that's enough for me. If we've all been deceived, it doesn't matter to me. What harm does it do if I choose to believe?
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored.
She's certain there's no Heaven and she says there's no Hell, Only when we die will we be able to tell. She insisted that's wrong, when the end of time comes, How can you know who'll be the chosen ones? CHORUS Maybe some pray just a little bit harder, Maybe the others never pray enough.. Maybe God has a tough choice to make, Or maybe it isn't that tough. Maybe some pray that they might be forgiven, For their sins and the ways they went wrong. Suppose when we reach the end of the line We find we were right all along?
BRIDGE Now I don't know the answers, I don't know the plan, I just put my trust in the Master's hand.

CHORUS Maybe some pray just a little bit harder, Maybe the others never pray enough..do you mean the ones that died didn't pray enough? .just wondering, though I like the lines...I wonder about another way to put it...Maybe some prayED..since it was past tense, if talking about the people involved in the storm, maybe the others didn't pray enough? Maybe WHAT IF ,I put this because it would take out a maybe here...God had a tough choice to make, Or maybe it wasn't that tough. You don't believe in Heaven and you say there's no Hell, Only when we die will we be able to tell. She insisted that's wrong, when the end of time comes, How can you know who'll be the chosen ones?in this verse you went from YOU to SHE..you may want to stick with one or the others...since you were talking about a particular non-believer in the earlier verse. or maybe you are addressing the listener now if so then it works...maybe say IF you don't believe, and say there's no hell...You insist that wrong..etc..
BRIDGE Now I don't know the answers, I don't know the plan, I just put my trust in the Master's hand. yes! me too..
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored. I like this alot...love the message of it...and I agree with you. I had a few places I felt may need a bit of attention...good luck with it and I am glad you continue to write..keep it up..:)

Hi Greg,
I love this. I have a very minor suggestions below kos of course.
Tornado touched down on the outskirts of town, Devastating everyone and everything around. A hundred souls died, but a hundred more survived, maybe thousands saved? Everybody thanking God that they're still alive.
Like I said very minor suggestion, this is really good!

Hi Lisa.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it. Next step, after a little tweaking, is to find some music for it.

Howdy Greg,
Very good write ya got here. I also like the message. How many times throughout life have we heard the comments after a disaster or something bad--how could a loving God let that happen. You did a great job on answering that. And when it's all said and done--it's better to be safe than sorry--I'm on the prayin and believin side as well. Nice job.
P.S. Glad to see ya gettin back to writing again. Take care, Roger

Hi Kim.
Thanks for having a look at this for me. You always give such well thought out feedback on people's writing and I, for one, really appreciate it. I'm glad you liked this and could appreciate my point of view.
You've brought up some good points and given me some things to think about. This lyric came together fairly quickly, so I'm sure there are some places that can be tightened up a bit.
Thanks for your support and encouragement!

Hi Dottie.
You know, sometimes minor suggestions can make a major difference. You're right that a thousand people surviving might actually be more realistic and accurate than a mere hundred. I'll edit that suggestion in after I hopefully get some more feedback.
I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment on this.

Happy Saturday, Roger! Sorry I never got around to acknowleging your comment. Thanks for stopping by and having a look. I've made a couple minor edits, so hopefully I'll get some more feedback.
This piece came about from some conversations my wife had with a co-worker who seems to stay miserable and bitter most of the time, and who relishes every opportunity to bash religion and those who believe in prayer and the existence of someone, or something, greater than ourselves. My wife sometimes gets intimidated and doesn't always know how to respond other than to say, "It works for me. Why is that a problem for you?"
Glad you liked this. How was Brad Paisley?

Greg, you might be right, I also believe so. This was inspiring.
Maybe you could use "rough" or "hard" in the line "Maybe God had a "tough" choice to make" to avoid duplicating "touch."
Maybe "Maybe some ask that they might be forgiven For their sins and the ways they went wrong Suppose we who pray reach the end of the line To find we were right all along"
Blessings, Pam

Good answer, Neil. I have no problem at all with the doubters and non-believers. I'm very much a live and let live kind of person. I just demand the same in return.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Greg,
I think you explore the emotions and feelings in this story quite well. Adding the details of "a lady I know" in there makes it a very personal journey/story that people can relate to. I have one thought about something. I like the Hallelujah couplets, but I'm wondering if that "faith restored" in that first one comes too soon or not. Would there be a stage of thinking about: "wow...we're thankful, but what just happened?!" It might be fine, as the others haven't mentioned it, but it just got me thinking as to the thought process one goes thru after some kind of disaster.
Anyway, I think the bridge has a nice humble feel to it.
I hope you find some music for it!
Kristi

Greg...I am printing this to look over. Haven't read it yet, as I like to have it in my hands to mill over intently....and I haven't read anyone's comments either....I like to hit it "cold"...but if you wrote it....it HAS to be good! I'll be back, okay?

Hi Greg,
I spent some time with this one last night and I love the conviction in this piece. I had a few suggestions....just keep them or completely sweep them. It's all just for thinking about.
Some Pray © 2012 Greg C. Brown
Tornado touched down on the outskirts of town, SHAKING UP everyone and everything around. A hundred FOLKS died, but a thousand survived, THEY STOOD thanking God FOR SPARING THEIR LIVES
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored.
A lady I know said it couldn't be so, Your Jesus is a myth and your Bible'S a joke. With a cynical eye she said it's all a big lie. What kind of God would let some live and some die?
CHORUS Maybe some pray just a little bit harder, Maybe SOME others never pray enough.. COULD IT BE God had a HARD choice to make, Or COULD IT BE it wasn't that tough. Maybe some pray TO BE forgiven, For sins and ways they went wrong. WHAT IF we COME TO the end of THIS LIFE AND find we were right all along?.... I'M JUST SAYIN' MAYBE THAT'S WHY SOME ARE PRAYIN'
In the sanctuary, MY BURDENS HE CARRIES THERE'S COMFORT IN MY SOUL AND that's enough for me. If YOU THINK WE'RE deceived, it doesn't BOTHER me. What harm does it do if I choose to believe?
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored.
BRIDGE:
She's certain there's no Heaven, SO THERE MUST BE no Hell, Only IN DEATH will we tell. She ASKED,WHEN YOU COME TO THE TIME WHEN YOUR DAYS ARE ALL UP How DO you know who'll be the chosen ones?
I SAID I'LL TAKE MY CHANCES HE HAS ALL THE ANSWERS THEN I'LL UNDERSTAND THE MASTER'S PLAN
CHORUS
Maybe some pray just a little bit harder, Maybe SOME others never pray enough..
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! MY Faith restored.
CHORUS (KEY CHANGE)
Maybe some pray just a little bit harder, Maybe SOME others never pray enough..
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Faith restored.

Hi Kristi. Thanks for reading this over for me and sharing your thoughts. Interesting point about the "faith restored" part of the couplet. You may have a point about whether it comes too soon in the lyric. I'll have to give that some thought.
I'm glad this worked for you for the most part. Thank you for the feedback.

Hi Greg,
I think you're off to such an incredible start.
If you stay with this on, I think you can fine tune it into an awesome song!
I really love this and want to see where you take it from here!

Hey there, Janarooney! Thanks for giving this the once over, although it looks like you also gave it a twice over and maybe even a thrice over. You've offered up some really good suggestions for me to think about, which is not surprising at all. I will give all of them some thought and see which ones will work best. Thank you for the time you spent carefully looking at this. It means a lot to me, but I don't have to tell you that. Greg

Hi there, Geneva! Thank you for having a look at my little offering here. There are still some things I may be doing with it. I've had some pretty good suggestions, and I will definitely be taking them into consideration. I'm happy you like what I've got going so far. I can't wait to see where I take it from here, too. Thanks for your time and your encouraging words. Greg
