Hi, I already posted as a new member, recently. But I have a question--
How do you provide a link to your mp3? I see some people are using SoundClick. Are there some other ways to do this?

Hi everyone! I'm a singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar player from Salt Lake City. I've spent the last couple of years polishing up my performance skills on the internet via the Second Life platform and now want to spread out to playing live more locally, possibly through festivals and house concerts. I think to do that, I need to sharpen up my writing skills and write more songs...I'm here hoping to find resources and feedback to help me do that

Welcome, Eric!
I hope you'll share more about your Second Life performances. My wife is active in SL and has been urging me to start performing there as well.

Sure Kevin, I'll be happy to share more about SL. I've played probably 600 shows there in 2 years so its fair to say I have some experience there. One of the great things about Second Life is that there's enough room for just about anyone to perform and to find an audience, regardless of their skill level or experience performing. It's a fantastic way to work on polishing up your act and to connect with an international audience. As long as you don't go in expecting to make a lot of money you'll probably do fine Probably the most difficult thing is just getting started, which requires you to figure out how to use a Shoutcast stream and how to navigate SL. There's a message board with a lot of that information here. Sounds like your wife can help you a lot with that second part too Anyhow, if you're interested in trying it out, the best thing to do is just go in and watch a few shows. A good place to start is at Guthries Folk Club, which has shows every morning from about 7:30 - 11 am Pacific Time and on the weekends in the evenings from 5pm -9pm Pacific time. If you have an account in SL you can just click on this link to go there: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kissena%20Park/13/165/22Anything else you'd like to know, feel free to look me up in Second Life, my name there is EricSteffensen Mistwalker.

Hi, I'm Richard James Marlen. Although I have a lot of experience in music, I have only recently taken up songwriting in a serious way. I have been doing a lot of research into copyright, music publishing and contracts. I have also been submitting my work to a few music publishers and producers. I take any help I can get from the group and I hope that I can contribute in several ways.

Hello. I like pop, both prose and off prose. I have sent some recordings to net dj's and also have them distributed on online distribution sites. I would like to get in to thematic music for presentations and films, both with instrumentals and with vocals.

HI All, I haven't been around here much in a while as having a kid somehow made most of my free time evaporate. And when I was here before I was more of a reader than a poster. So just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 36 live in Md and play bass in an instrumental improv group called Deep Tree Mantra. I also play guitar and do singer songwriter type stuff on that. Played at one o fthe road trip events a few years back which was a lot of fun. But with limited time as a family guy that has really been back burner-ed and the DTM group has become my primary focus for the past few years. We do not really gig much and it's primarily a creative recording project. We do think a lot of our music would lend itself well to film and tv use. We're also always open to have other musicians sit in with us for sessions. So anyone who is in the Baltimore area or who happens to be passing through that would like to sit in on a recording / jam session with us feel free to reach out. We would especially love to have a string player - violin, cello or similar come sit in with us. Lot's of free streaming tracks on our site here www.deeptreemantra.com. Though all the tracks on the site currently feature our previous guitarist. Some new tracks with our more current guitarist will be posted.... at some point Anyway enough about me. Looking forward to getting to know some of you better. Best, John Hornsby

Brian My name is AJ. I've had a quick peek at the songs on the MP3 sections... mostly folk music... haven't really paid too much attention to the music yet, just a quick run through. Hope to learn new stuff here.

Actually there's very little Folk music on this site. You'll find a lot of Country though. And a lot of songwriter demos where people have no arranging skills. Can you post samples of your arranging work for people to check out on the MP3 board? If your sound is something people like, they'll likely be happy to work with you.

glynda, I had several bands before but lately I mostly do pop songs with a slight hint of Jazz with my current band. I prefer to do collaborations online coz I find it easier. My band mate is also a member here (I met him online). You can check out some of my works through http://tentomidnight.webs.com There's some songs there in my native language so it might not make sense but we also have English songs there. Brian, I'll post some of my works there. I would be great if I get to work with folks from here. I enjoy working with other musicians because it opens up new creative ideas. I'm looking forward to meet the other members. Thanks.

Anto,
The problem with using aliases is that no one really gets to know who you are. You will find this a very warm neighborhood with people more than willing to help and get to know you personally past just the music. That is actually the key to music, getting to know your audience personally and having them know you.
Today's successful writers and artists, are the one's who have a very tight connection to their audiences. The one's who are live performers have a knack for grabbing their listeners and not letting them go. That comes through a very direct approach both through the music itself and then the social networking, as well as the live abilities.
You will find people here are more willing to listen to music when you listen to theirs. And understand that this site is more of a networking neighborhood than a place to actually sell music. Everyone here are salesmen too. It is more for sharing of information, song critiques, and experiences. Everyone has been through something someone else hasn't so it can get invaluable in order to keep from making sometimes costly mistakes.
But almost everyone has some suggestions or experiences with the various methods of "getting songs out there." My personal one revolves around being involved in your local communities, attending shows, writer's events, supporting other writers. constantly meeting people face to face and expanding from there. Many others choose a more online route and things like Reverb Nation, Taxi, CD Baby, film and television libraries, each with varying degrees of success or frustration.
But in order to get friends you have to be one first. I think visiting some other people's web sites, dropping personal asides, learning a bit about other people, their experiences, etc. may give you more of an insight to what goes on here.
We are always around to help you. Just ask away.

Hi. I am a returning member. Used to be somewhat active in Orange County and L.A. chapters number of years ago...but a move to the Inland Empire kept me from driving such long distances. Now I am living in the Northwest. Don't know yet if Portland area has much JPF stuff going on. Thanks! Gayle Myrna www.reverbnation.com/gaylemyrna

Hi; new guy here. My username here is kind of an alter ego. I bought a guitar and started making up songs a few years ago when I was near a half century old. I aim for the humorous and offbeat or novelty type songs, just because that's the stuff I liked best when I was growing up. Sometimes my lyrics spill over into the more serious or traditional areas, too. Mostly they're poems, and I'll add a little musicality tagged on afterward. I like to trot them out at the open mics. I'm also a music theory hobbyist; I enjoy discussing the structures and science behind what makes music work.

Hi Jody and Ricky, welcome to JPF's message board.
Ricky: If you'd like feedback, I suggest posting a specific song you want feedback on over on the actual mp3 or lyric feedback boards rather than here where few will see it and be clear in your introduction that you want hard core honest feedback. Being as you are new, folks may ease into any tough criticism initially. More importantly is to first do some critiques of others first which will motivate everyone to respond in kind to yours. If you do quality critiques of others with depth, it will demonstrate what you are looking for in kind. Our site is a two way street among peers.
See you both on the boards.
Brian

My name is Justin Callahan and I'm new to the site. I've been writing most of my life. I've just started to get serious and do some song demos. I've yet to attend any pitch events, but look forward to being able to. I plan to travel to Nashville early next year to get activly involved in the scene and start trying to pitch. For now I'm doing my best to network online. I live 30 minutes outside of Bristol, TN. You'ld think it would be easy to find some cowriters, but most people are just doing covers around here. If anyone lives near by or wants to work on skype with me to cowrite that would be great. Justin Callahan skype: jcall6...I think lol, look me up by my name. I'm not at home to check that username. Hi all, I'm a completely new member who was recommended this site by a recording artist. I'm here really to get some feedback on my songwriting and to do the same for others. Could anyone point me in the same direction. Many thanks, K

hi Ken-welcome to JPF go to www.soundclick.com and open up a account there to host your mp3 recordings.......then link to that page when you put up songs for review in the MP3 forum......when posting lyrics only simply put them up in any one of the 3 LYRIC FORUMS..... conversely-go to those forums to review the work of others-all critiques and comments will be appreciated.....let us know if you have any other questions..... have fun Tom
