Thanks, all. Here's Number Two--just because I went through the "which dead animal shall I do?" exercise this morning, and there wasn't any point in waiting any longer.
This is the only song I ever co-wrote with my daughter, who is all grown up and graduated from college and married and working now, and doesn't like to be reminded about it.
And yes, I suppose it could be considered a parody of sorts--except I never could follow Mel Torme's fruity chords, and re-did it as country music. Obviously, it echoes the original closely enough so you can tell where it came from.

Ok... now I'm telling you this one took guts for me to try... and even more guts to actually post this train-wreck, but here's my first contribution for the ZOO song:
Title: Rocky Raccoon
Artist: The Beatles

CHALLENGE OPEN FOR THIS WEEK: If you can't see the banner, it is: TAKE ME TO THE ZOO MON Oct 3- FRI Oct 7 Post ANY SONG with an animal named in the Artist, Title or Lyric Original or Cover songs accepted 2 songs per person per week
PS: I HAVE IN MY HEAD A SECRET SONG.... which if anyone posts they will get a Bonus Song Coupon Banner... bwahahaahaaa.....
Songs may be repeated, so I won't tell what the Secret Song is until the end of this Challenge in case more than one of you wind up with it.
So far no one has done it yet. However I realize that's really broad so HERE ARE TWO HINTS: 1) Joe Wrabek COULD easily have written this one but didn't 2) Animal in the Secret Song is pictured in the above banner
PPS: I will also award a Bonus Song Coupon to anyone who comes up with an animal in their song which can be deemed more "exotic" wild, or "rare" than a Hippopotamus. LOL!
@ Geneva.... LOL about those backup singers!!! I agree... little bit of a pain, but you really hung in there with them!! You actually have a very comparable voice to Tanya, and you sounded great on this song, which I absolutely LOVE this tune!!
@ Glyn... Sounding really super here.. very beautiful song choice! I enjoyed my listen all the way!!
@ Linda... another absolutely HYSTERICAL performance... I about fell out of my chair when you started singing!!! That is some super funny stuff!! Loved it!!

[color:#FF0000]You MUST USE the FULL REPLY button to get to that "markup" option!! OK? OK!! But it's OK I still love you all and will keep pulling your players down for y'all
We are using more a "Twitter format" here to reply to songs rather than individual post replies (as is more common on the MP3/Lyric boards) to avoid thread clutter -- like so: @Glyn -- {compliment goes here} @Linda -- {ditto} @Joe -- {ditto!} ETC!

@ Linda... another absolutely HYSTERICAL performance... I about fell out of my chair when you started singing!!! That is some super funny stuff!! Loved it!!
LOL Jen wait'll you get a hold of Joe's second entry!!!!! tie yourself to the chair first!!
here to listen now! first up.. Snowbird... no order here, but I just heard this again after ages and ages - so I clicked it first...
@Glyn -- strong performance!! Just beautiful!
@Jen -- Sing - Ahhhhh!!! I think it's allowed to say you look MAHvelous in this vid, m'dear! and your singing - equally as marvelous! I LOVE this song always have! Rocky Racoon - JUST RIGHT! you did smashing! Man I forgot that song.... lol... terrific job, worries or no! Good landing!
@Geneva - I dunno where you were getting feedback you "can't sing" because surely you have a LOVELY tone here... very suited to this song, and yeah just ignore the backup singers!! (they're just a pain - we all agree!) ... I really enjoy your voice - SING ON! :-)
Now hang on a sec -- for some reason, first it took me to Gretchen Wilson and "When I Think About Cheatin" - so that up there is for that one... here is for "Sparrows" ... lol... OK I'm not a lot into Country so, this is actually a new one to me! (shoot me) .. but what a pretty song - and great vocal!! and terrific introduction to this lovely tune. Oh those ARE loud backing singers... you can slide the "mixer" button more toward your "voice" on a remix to tone them down some - but during the singing, it IS tough -- you handled it though!! Sounds just great! sweet song- sung sweetly!
@Joe - Dead Dog - Oh yeah I've heard this 'un before -- and the Chimpunks Roasting too - LAUGHED all the way - and replaying happily to laugh some more!! awesome songwriting.... oh man... you are right up there with Ray Stevens! equal or more talent to good ol' Ray!! LOL I'd forgotten all the lyrics here... HAHAHAAA aw, now you've got me feeling all Christmas-y!
@Ann - Oooh Cool song choice! I've just figured out who Florence & the Machine are - very cool stuff, tho, this is my first intro to this one. Strong singing here! you landed those high notes! and the feel of the song was just great - enjoyed! thanks so much for popping in and joining us, so glad to have you!
lolllllllll Linda, how fun, sounded liket the lollipop kids in the Widzard of OZ...tis had me rolling outta my chair....great....i'm trying to make music for my song that I wrote, hope I can find some
I don't see a markup buttom so i'm not sure what you're talkin about, I see edit, reply, quote, quick reply, quick quote, notify and email post...that's all
It's so cool hearing everybody having fun in this thread!
@Geneva You have no idea how difficult that song was lol!! Florence is hard to sing because her vocal melodies are syncopated and don't often go with the drum beats. Not to mention the higher notes. Your Steve Earle song was cool by the way. I've never heard that song but it sounded good to my ears!
@Jen Warner I've never heard this Beatles tune before but I liked your singing. I thought you sounded really good! Plus it sounded like you were having a lot of fun with it, and isn't that what karaoke is all about??
@Joe I knew as soon as I saw your song title I had to listen haha . Very clever and funny.
Thanks, Linda (and thanks, everybody for your nice comments). I'll trade in my bonus coupon for this one. Off the Deathgrass album Dead Things in the Shower:
And Linda, the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned your Secret Song was "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road." Yes, I probably could've written that. Didn't, though.
Joe: Thanks, Linda (and thanks, everybody for your nice comments). I'll trade in my bonus coupon for this one. Off the Deathgrass album Dead Things in the Shower:

GLYN: Exactly! HIT REPLY instead of using the little box at the bottom of the topic page. then you SHOULD see this option:
But you WON'T find it from the little auto-reply box at the bottom where we usually type replies! Use the Gray "REPLY" button you just mentioned. L
@Glyn: Frankly, I like your version better than Anne Murray's. I realized what I felt was missing from Anne's was a good Southern accent.
@Geneva: You done good. That is a hard song to sing, and I could never have managed to stay in tune with those backup singers interruptin' all the time.
@Linda: Like everybody else said, hilarious. Have you thought about doing more children's songs?
@Jen: I think you did at least as good as John Lennon--probably better. Again, not an easy song to sing.
@Ann: I'd never heard of Florence and the Machine before. Really interesting song. Your voice is good for this/
Geneva (I think?) was asking about an inexpensive setup... this one? which I DO NOT OWN... looks reasonable - you get 2 mics with a USB mixer to plug in to either Windows or Mac for $30, $20 if you buy a paid membership on their sponsoring site. http://www.thekaraokechannel.com/online#tag=18yvsz0iimg&page=membership_kit
HOWEVER there may be "just as cheap" options out there... this is just one. IF you own RockBand for Wii etc or similar, that USB mic that comes with it WILL plug into your computer as well!
Lots of folks on the karaoke sites using a headset like the one you describe though! OK good luck!!
Since no one's posted another one for today, here's my second animal song to start off the morning! Can't get the embedding thing to work (grrrrrr) so I'll just post the link here:
On Singsnap -- the embed code is right under your URL/Link code - if you drop the code in your post I will put up your player. ReverbNation DOES have a player embed but it's hard to find!
As Glyn shows - she doesn't have the HTML option in her browser or operating system - SOME JPF'ers don't have HTML markup capacity and I/ we haven't figured out why.
If you use the REPLY button - then look for the MARKUP button and see your options - -then we'll know whether you can or can't embed a player.
Glyn -- you found the options!! but the bad news is, you can't embed because "HTML is disabled" on your machine. So I will keep pulling it down for you by Quoting your post. It only takes seconds! not a big deal! for those of you who can't ... you'll see something more like this:
No HTML option means you don't have what it needs. But I do. So post your code anyway and I'll wave my magic wand!! lol
So Ann - your code for that song looks like this when you paste it: <object width="357" height="458"><param name="movie" value="http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/e/bfb3fe3e4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/e/bfb3fe3e4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="357" height="458"></embed></object>
....and if you change the Markup to HTML this happens... (wait a sec!)....
Oh Oh! I forgot and cleared my throat again, sorry. One of these days when I say I'm gonna toss those smokes in the trash, I'm gonna mean it, but I'm not there yet! Nasty habit!
My animal's a dog
from Tim Mcgraw's Refried dreams
And yea, I'm havin' lots of fun and'll prob'ly learn a thing or two 'bout singin' from all of you!
@ Geneva -- that was super fun and funny!! LOL another song I hadn't heard. That's one entertaining thing about doing this - we all bring different music and song backgrounds with us! and you sound terrific! thanks for posting!
PS best wishes to you with quitting! hope it takes one of these days-- for your health!
>>> I'm thinking here if everyone's having lots of fun with this theme and I can keep up with the listening along, I may open it up to 3 songs each. I'll let ya know by tomorrow morning! Dunno who else may wander in and start singing along meanwhile!
I got lost toward the middle/end but was sick of re-doing it! I'll try again someday when I'm not sick. Ha. This is only staying up this week "in public."
Colin, Joe, and Scott, It's gotta be awesome to have the know how, I mean all those skills you've developed to do all your own songs, and you all sound great, each with your own unique sound and style!
Linda, I so appreciate your kind words and how you've tried to give me the confidence to "get over it" and keep tryin', AND I LISTENED! You have very powerful vox, I love it!
Glyn, You have an awesome country sound! You have that natural drawl that I try to fake. You ain't heard it yet, but if I get braver and try and "sing out" in front of others you might, I just hope it don't suck too much. But it'll never be anything like yours, yea, you're definately a natural!!
Jen, You sure can sing! I was watchin' Rocky Racoon yesterday (haven't thought of that song in years), you just did such a great job and looked so confident I loved it!
Ann, You took on quite the song, a real hard one, and you did awesome with it!
I hope I didn't miss anyone, if I did I'm sorry and will catch you next time around. I've watched all your videos and heard your songs, what a great thread Linda (applause)!
And again - we want to keep up with our "regular" JPF activity too so this doesn't slow down WRITING music! just listen to what you can when you can... it is FUN to listen to everyone, but if you have to pick and choose just one or two that is OK too!!
@Linda Thanks for getting the embedding thing working! I'd read through the tutorial you posted but the option to post with HTML doesn't come up in my browser (silly Safari on Mac grrrr). I even tried restarting my browser but it didn't come up. Oh well, it's fixed now Btw, what a difficult song with The Lonely Goatherd! Julie Andrews really does make that song sound easy, but you did awesome with it! Good job!
@Geneva Thanks for the kind words! You sounded pretty good too.
....but the option to post with HTML doesn't come up in my browser (silly Safari on Mac grrrr). I even tried restarting my browser but it didn't come up. Oh well, it's fixed now
Meaning I posted your player for you, as fixed?
...I am using Safari and Mac! no problems here! BUT I've also upgraded to Lion - it might be a Snow Leopard issue is my guess?
SOME JPF MEMBERS are reporting in they don't have that option! Mac AND PC.
Which is why I'm trying to be clear about asking - can you see it - or not? I will keep "pulling down" the players on my Mac - it's not a big deal! but if you CAN do it ... that's all I'm sayin'!
Thx for the compliments - oh I hear many pitchy notes when I play that back LOL .. whew that was a pain in the rear I tell ya.

Sorry I should've made myself clearer. The HTML option in the Markup drop down menu was not available in my browser but when you put the player up for my song in one of your posts, I was able to see the SongSnap player for my song.
@Linda, that Lonely Goatherd song was impressive. I think you could give the Ms. Andrews a run for her money. (And she didn't have the spare breath to throw in comments either.)
Before my friend Hillary moved to Alaska, we used to record songs - one of mine, then a cover, one of mine, then a cover, and so on. I miss that. :)
This cover of the Tokens fits the theme - Hillary has the main vocal:
Song: The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Artist: Hillary and Scott
....but the option to post with HTML doesn't come up in my browser (silly Safari on Mac grrrr). I even tried restarting my browser but it didn't come up. Oh well, it's fixed now

Check!!! No prob -- just post your code, and I will work my Magic. LOL
ok i'm having alot of trouble with the mixer on singsnap, i've done several songs all day but can't use them, this is the best one and it sounds like me and the kids from the hills...lol
@Scott -- oh how VERY COOL, I didn't know you had this tucked away!! man you two sound great!! :-) what a nice voice she has too... and your wim-oh-wehs are spot-on perfect!! Really enjoyed this - crystal clear voice there and your arrangements are always great, right on the money. The harmonies building at the end... oh sweet!! Lovely!
@Joe :: thanks... I hear "pitchy" ... so thank you!! Wouldn't dare post it for review on MP3. hahahaa LOL.
ok i'm having alot of trouble with the mixer on singsnap, i've done several songs all day but can't use them, this is the best one and it sounds like me and the kids from the hills...lol
LINDA: AAARGGGGHHHHHH BAD MIXER DAYS ON SingSnap!!!! They happen... listening here... I'll see if I can help you figure out how to fix if it still needs a fix... Will PM you if I "hear" a solution.
**JUST SO** everyone knows who isn't using SingSnap -- there is a very simplified Mixer after recording available - (you can re-mix for up to 30 days and then it's set forever) ... with option to adjust your vocal level to the music level AND to sync the timing if it comes in "off" on playback.
Mine are almost ALWAYS out of sync tho I sing "in time" on the beat and I'm sure of it - it's a "LATENCY" issue between their server and your web connection going on and some days are easy and some days are just AWFUL... sometimes it varies hour by hour... so I feel for you Glyn!!
ANY-WAY just as a reference point for anyone NOT using SingSnap - if you hear any of us and the entire track seems ahead of or behind the beat - it is *more than likely* NOT the singer but their system at fault, and our ability (collectively... on any individual song) to get the blasted thing to line back up properly. Aaaargh.
PS Gotcha Glyn -- to me it sounds like you still need to re-mix and try about a "+5" ... but it's not YOUR timing... it's the entire track... once it is lined up straight you will be on the beat!!
thanks just listen to my song and this was the best one....huckkkkk
@ Glyn the SINGING itself was GREAT tho hun!! I loved it-- a terrific choice for your country soul and vocal!!! SHINE ON! I can tell it's just the track sync. Oy!
@ Joe - just getting back to "armadillo" now and LOL'ing again! Pretty sure I heard at least an early draft but I LOVE your intro here... awesome....!!! CLASSIC JOE!
