I've been looking for a decent short-scale bass for a while now. As a teenager, I played a Kay copy of an SG bass that I wish I still had. I am primarily a guitarist, so the short scale feels more natural to me.

After a day of scouring pawn shops a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Jay Turser JTB-40 bass. I put it through the paces while in the shop and was very impressed by the quality of this little instrument. After some negotiations, I walked out the door with it for 70 bucks. They also threw in a black and pink "Hello Kitty" gig bag. I told them I would pay more if they kept the bag, but the salesman was insistent. whistle

I know nothing about the company, but if all of their products are like this, I will certainly look at them in the future. Here's their website: http://www.jayturser.com/jtb-40.php Can anyone here tell me anything about the company?

Thanks in advance!

I've read a lot of reviews on the Hofner Bass copy and they all were enthusiastically positive. The only negatives mentioned by a lot of folks is the cheesy pick guard and the strings that come with it.

Kevin...I have a friend who has several Jay Tursers..this guy is a fantastic musician, but can't afford really exspenive instruments..he thinks they're great for the money! I've also heard good things about SX products. Rhondo sells them.

Have fun!

Jay Turser is just a marketing name. They actually design and develop specs, but source their instruments, from among other companies, TEAM International in China which makes the SX line of guitars.

Canyontide...I have 4 SX guitars. Two acoustics, an electric and an acoustic bass. Great sound, quality and price...and all from Rhondo

Kevin,

I haven't played any of the Jay Turser products, but I have played several Chinese made basses and guitars and the quality of tone and playability is pretty good. Often, it's at volume that you might hear a problem or when compressed and recorded. Listen to the high end, it should ring but not sound brittle.

Mike

Wow, people are commenting on this thread and it's almost a year old. smile

So here it is, nine months later and I'm still tickled with this little bass. I used it when I recorded my CD and I'm very happy with this $70.00 pawn shop find. No, it's not the same as the old Gibson Grabber I played back in the 80's, but then again, I don't cover a lot of KISS material these days either.

I certainly won't turn my nose up at any other Jay Turser or SX products now. I don't think I could have said that before this little bass fell into my lap!

Another convert smile

There is a discussion elsewhere about the 1970's Japanese "lawsuit guitars", guitars that basically built Martins and other high end guitars...I have one of those too, a Yamaki.

When I began hearing about SX guitars, I bought one, a Taylor knockoff, and very quickly bought the others. Did so primarily because I saw the Yuan being revalued so that they would cost more. I see them aging just like my Yamaki because they use solid woods like cedar and spruce for their tops...not all of them of course, but certainly the ones I bought. Add the acoustics came with pickups...and all for the price of about $150U$, and they're a steal.

When my LP knockoff came, I brought it to my local shop to get set up...only because I never owned an electric, and had no idea really if it was properly set up. It was very playable, and sounded fine, but I wanted to make sure.

I asked they guy in the store what it was worth. He didn't know the brand, but he felt it could easily be priced in the $500 range...and I paid about $150

John, I have a feeling that Rondomusic.com is going to end up with a bit of my money soon!

You wont regret it Kevn. And Kurt is great to deal with. Any issues you have he'll happily deal with. Not that I have had any, but reviews back me up.

He also sells off of ebay, so you might browse his selection there as well as on his on line store.

Keep me informed please.
