On February 14th 2009, Continental Flight 3407 crashed into a house in Clarence NY killing all 49 on board as well as one of the unsuspecting residents of the home below. I live and work a few miles away from where this disaster occurred. A coworker lost 3 close friends. We watched the news updates together as one by one the names of the victims were released. It was quit surreal. A week later I met Karen, the newly widowed wife of the man killed in the home below. She and her daughter were on the second floor and miraculously found their way out. She credited a strange light that shined bright through the smoke guiding her and her daughter to safety. She is certain it was provided by her husband who was killed on impact. Within seconds of their escape, the remaining fuel exploded, leveling what was left of there home.

It’s taken over a year to feel comfortable about putting this into words and I know there are none that will ever do this story justice. The music is still a work in progress. I need to really tighten up the piano (Not a keyboard player but I try. Critiques would be appreciated. If you are not familiar with this event and are curious. Simply Google Flight #3407. Thanks!

One On The Ground
(The flight of #3407)

3407 was on it’s way home
Mere miles left to travel, it’s fate still unknown
3407 was still unaware
Of the ice on it’s wings and the burden they bared

For one on the ground, forty nine in the air

Idle talk in the cabin, the focus was dim
With experience lacking, the outlook was grim
The crew in the cockpit were caught by surprise
Spiraling helplessly downward through forsaken skies

Say a prayer for us now called out forty nine cries

Below in a small town where people feel safe
In their small homes unknowing of what soon awaits
A family forever remembers this day
How a husband and father was taken away

There’s no one reason why and no words one can say

An explosion so loud shook the earth where they lay
Through the walls of the small home where children once played
Somehow mother and daughter saw light through the haze
Lit from above led them out through the maze

From the one on the ground and those 49 names

Nothing wrong with the musical demo here. Sounds good enough to me to get the song across. I'd say musically, so far so good. Lyrically, maybe you're trying to tell two stories at once - the tale of the passengers and the tale of the family on the ground. That's hard to do in the format of a 3 minute song. Not sayin' it can't be done. But you've chosen a tough row to hoe.

Write from your heart, not what you think others want to hear.

Dan,

You're right. It is a lot of story to tell in 3 minutes. Being a very somber subject I wanted to keep it short. Songs of this nature that run to long have a tendency to make the listener jump ship about mid way through. Thus the challenge, saying it all concisely in a brief lyric. Still working on this one. I'm sure there will be changes to come. Thanks!

Hi Tom. Really nice playing and the story is solid but I wouldn't worry about it being too long to flesh out the story more. Reminds me of a Jim Croce song with the guitars. The strings add a lot. I don't think anyone will jump ship on you if you lengthen it a bit. The music carries it well enough to keep interest.

Hi,

Wow, you've captured this situation really well.
I followed you closely through the entire song.
Very good performance about something horrible.

Stevie,

Thanks for listening. I think I will add one or two more verses and maybe elaborate on the people in the home that survived, maybe referencing how that light continues to shine even after they are gone. There are so many interesting story lines here that could be songs all by themselves. Another passenger on the plane who died lost her husband in the twin towers on 9/11. And that's one of 50 stories. I think I've got my work cut out for me. Thanks again!

Loved the lyrics and the music... I was thinking you should add some different music at the end, but the mood I was left with at the end was so powerful. Good job.

Hello Tom

Yes I remember and You have to done a wonderful job with such
sensitive subject matter.

Not everyone can write such a song and not come across as exploitative but you have pulled it off beautifully.

Well Done...

Nelson

Ps. "Miles" is also a great song.

Tom,

That music is very appropriate for the lyric.

I am not sure with the lyric which story you want to emphasize more but I will make a small suggestion...

I would say to cut verse 2, I don't think it needs to be there for the story, I would cut out the "for one on the ground" and "say a prayer" lines and instead say something like, "Forty-nine cries sounded out in the air...

That would imply the crash to the waiting town, that would then allow another verse to add to the story of the mother and the girl.

I understand the "one on the ground" is your hook, but I think focusing on one story would make it more cohesive.

That is just a suggestion and my opinion, but I love the music and I always think it is so good to relay these stories to make people aware through music.

wow,
I can see this as the theme song for a movie based on this event.
you might want to keep an eye out for that...
go for it, do both stories! you can do it!
nice guitar and piano sets the mood very nicely for the lyrics.

Very nice tribute to the victims of Flight 3407. Haunting and sad. Was it 49 lives or 50 that were lost? What was the final official tally? The National Post reported 50. For anyone who was wondering, on February 12th, 2009 fifty people were killed when a plane crashed into a house near Buffalo, New York, and burst into a ball of flames. The plane, a Continental Connection flight operated by Colgan Air, was on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Buffalo with 44 passengers and four crew and one off-duty airline employee on board when it crashed in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence Center amid rain and sleet.

Yep, just did the math on who was actually aboard the plane. It adds up to 49 so it HAD to be someone on the ground. Imagine sitting at home watching TV and a plane comes tearing in through your living room wall? For those who live under a flight path I'm sure it must have crossed your minds at least once. Again, nice song. I just finished listening to it a second time.

Duncan,

There were 49 in the plane and one man killed in his home when the plane crashed into it. I have met the family of the gentleman who lost his life on the ground. His widow, Karen Wisolowski (forgive me if the spelling is wrong) is the one who gave me the first hand account of how she and her daughter escaped that day. They are good people and that is why I felt compelled to write this song. Thanks for taking time to stop and listen.
