This is my version of the Guess Who song, written by Burton Cummings. Been in a writing drought lately so I did this just to push myself a little bit musically. Not sure I lived up to it... I have no idea what this song is about. But it sure is fun to play and sing! Albert Flasher is here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9073691Mostly just sharing but if you have any suggestions related to the mix, arrangement, performance or production, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks! Scott

I haven't heard this song since it was on the radio. I like your mix better than the original. Your voice has its own uniqueness that makes this special.

Thanks Stan - I was! Glad you like this. I listen to the original and hear the musicality that I just can't touch. But you don't get better unless you try - which was the point of the exercise. Appreciate it, Stan! Scott

Thanks Larry! No, you're not getting hard of hearing. I just find it difficult to mix vocal and music - particularly when it is my vocal. Funny thing is, I'm the one that's always telling people to bring up the vocal. Your opinion has been seconded, thirded and fourthed below - so I'll get on it. Thanks! Scott

Thanks Rick. Funny story - I heard this song exactly ONCE on the radio when I was about 12 years old. I had no idea what the title was and who sang it, and couldn't remember much about the lyric. But that melody line stuck with me for nearly 40 years! I was surfing on iTunes one day and found it by accident. Love when that kind of thing happens. Dang - gotta go to work. Back later..... Scott

Scott....Well, that was just loads of fun to listen to. I am not familiar with that song or have no idea what the lyrics are about, but I loved listening to your delivery of it, as usual. Did you play everything on this one???? The piano and harp sounded great as did your vocs....you have such a raw honest sound and I mean that in the very best way, believe me. Dang....I would love to hear you sing live.
And to think that only 3 years ago....I lived in Winterhaven..darn it!
Great work as usual, Scott.

Cool cool cool.... you rule! Is that you playing piano? When did you get this good? Also your voice is getting rougher and rougher sounding... Why? just curious... Raise the vocal level on this for sure.... Thanks Sub - I will.... My problem is that I never practice any of my songs. The only "practice" is when I'm composing them. So I set out to try one that I knew I'd have to seriously practice. Even so, in the intro and break there are two piano parts - so I'm using 4 hands there rather than two. And I think I'd have to play it for a year before I could sing it while I was playing the keys As for the vocal - my normal singing voice is about halfway between this and the first stuff I posted 5 years ago. For my first 4 years here, I made all my efforts into smoothing it. Over the past year, I started exploring the other side I'll probably start moving to the middle one of these days Thanks, my friend! Scott

Thank-YOU, Calvin There's nothing I could ever teach YOU. I CAN say though that I've begun to enjoy singing more since I decided not to conclude it would sound bad before I recorded it. Now I make that decision after I post it Scott

LOL I don't have a clue what the lyrics are saying but it sure sounded fun to play and sing. Kinda like supercalafragalisticexpialidosis Who cares.
Great job on the cover. Did you play everything? Good work Scott. I dunno, Bill. For some reason, "I was a diesel fixer, fixed a diesel, diesel fixed me, what a weasel" speaks to me Thanks! I'm playing rhythm guitar, harmonica and keys. During the breaks and intro there are two piano parts. Mostly I was focused on getting that ascending piano roll to sound OK (8 chords in 8 beats) so I didn't mind cheating on the break. The drum track is a mix of a canned track and extra fills that I added by hand using the drum sounds on my keyboard. The bass track is totally canned. Often I go back and play the bass part manually on the keyboard so that it sounds a little more natural but I probably won't bother here. The real goal was just to learn a (for me) hard keyboard part. Scott

Jan Wow - Winterhaven to Michigan. I think that would kill me Thanks Jan - please scroll up one post to see the details on the instruments. I'm not great on the keys - I can usually get something to sound decent if I really work at it but I don't have the natural feel that others here (Johnny D, for instance) have. Long as it's fun though....that seems to be all I care about. Scott

Your bud,
Steve Hey Steve: Thanks - glad you liked the harp. I played cross harp on this (using harp that is in a different, but complementary, key) which I rarely do.... As for the piano - the breaks and intro have two tracks superimposed so it was easier than it sounds. Yeah, I'll raise the vocal some. Appreciate the listen and suggestions, Buddy..... Scott

Well, it took me a coupla days to get around to listening to this, Scott, but it was sure worth the wait! I have always loved the Guess Who and Burton Cummings in particular. His solo work is fabulous.
Oddly enough, "Albert Flasher" was never a favorite of mine, but I have gained a whole new appreciation for it now, thanks to you. You do good stuff, my friend!

Being Canadian, I have heard this song thousands of times, and I have always loved it. However, I have never heard a cover version - so I have to say I admire you for taking it on. It ain't an easy tune to play!
Well done, Scott.

Thanks Mike - I didn't even check to see if anyone covered this. It's a cool song - I don't know why there wouldn't be more. Yeah, it was pretty hard - especially for someone who isn't particularly a musician. But it seemed like a good idea - certainly learned a few things along the way... Scott

Cool tune Scott. I like pretty much everything about this.
You need to bump your vocal level a bit. The words are a bit lost and this tune is very much about the words.
I like the piano part but I don't like the honky tonk patch you're using. You've quantized it right?... Anyway, my suggestion is to use an electric piano patch, in stereo... process the left and right channels differently till you have a sound that's kinda like a piano, but kinda not. That piano part is the biggest part of your arrangement, and it's the weakest bit IMO (sound-wise only, it's a GREAT part). With the processed piano, at least as I'm imagining it, you'll have a kinda huge wall of sound patch, coming at you from both sides. By doing this you'll make the quantized piano sound cool instead of quantized.
If it works!... it might not work... just something to try.
Anyway, like I said, cool arrangement. If you wrote the piano part itself, I give you kudos... it's a VERY cool part.
Peace,
Ian

Peace,
Ian Hi Ian: Thanks - yeah, that piano part was pretty much the reason I took a crack at this. It's played on my keyboard but recorded as an audio file - not midi. And not quantized. Possibly what you're hearing is that I don't have a great feel for the keys and so it's a little mechanical sounding... But your suggestions are worth exploring - I've got plenty of other piano sounds on the keyboard I can play around with - and can look at your suggestions for processing the track too. Many thanks! Scott

Well, in the breaks and intro, there are two piano parts. But yeah, I must have practiced that upward roll a few hundred times. When I started to record, I got "red light fever" and kept screwing up. But on about the 8th take, I played it through and only had to do one short punch-in afterwards. Thanks Ian Scott
