OK, this is probably a rip-off of a Van Morrison or The Band type song. But, if you gonna steal, might as well steal from the best.

Phrasing is a trifle off here and there -- but it is FAWM/RPM!

Kevin

EDIT, 3/13: Slap Johnson adds sax -- wow! I also the edited the last verse, but I am not happy yet with how that flows. Always more to do.

EDIT, 3/15: I am still not happy with that last stanza. I think it is a better "filled-out" idea now -- but it doesn't sing as well.

***********************************

Ole Stomping Ground
(c) Emmrich 2010

With the radio playing
and the saxophones wailing
it was 1974

down at the beach
with the friends all around
we were always looking
for something more

I don't know how
many of us found it
I guess I never took a poll

I gotta say
we got what we got
and it was better
than nothing at all

(chorus)
I'm going back down
to that ole stomping ground
I wonder who'll be around
probably no one I'll remember
and not a soul will know me
but I'm going back down
to that ole stomping ground

I thought it would be so good
going by the old neighborhood
and say goodbye one more time

everything looks kinda different,
the old replaced by the new
I guess I don't really mind, cause
I've done a bit of changing, too

everything looks kinda different,
not much the same
in a funny kind of way
I don't even mind

(chorus again)

Kevin: vocals, acoustic guitar
Bethan Mathis: vocals
Slap Johnson: Sax!
BIAB: drums, bass, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, piano, fiddle

Hi Kevin

Well maybe it does have that Band flavor -- but that's okay --- it's not like that's all you do... I enjoyed it == like the fiddle addition -- I guess that I could hear a blue grass band take it up tempo even more but the way you have it works fine. : ) good work~ jm

Joice: Thanks for stopping by. I did consider a little faster tempo -- but this was just the speed I "naturally" sang it at -- so I went with it. Thanks for the visit -- I must be posting too many from FAWM/RPM, I think folks are tired of my singing (ha, ha).

Like it! The acoustic guitar was particularly sweet! And the fiddles finished it off just perfectly. Nice work!

Hello again -- updated with Bethan from RPM adding a little bit of vocals here and there.

Al: Thanks for stopping by. I've listened to your new song tonight, but I haven't commented yet. Glad you enjoyed it.

Bob: Yea, Van is one of my favorites. Thanks for the visit and, hey, that new one is yours too!! I'll get to it

Nice, Kevin. I hear both of the influences you mentioned. Seems more like something Van the Man would do - maybe with Rick Danko singing harmony. smile

Has a nice feel to it - music supports the nostalgic feel of the lyric. Only one nit - the rhyme of all and poll seemed a little too much of a stretch to me....

Hi Kevin,

Nice feel to this one. I think the music sounds like a really good match for the lyrics. These visits to our past seem to be making the rounds on the boards. Only nit I have is with the last verse (or bridge?)

"everything looks kinda different,
not much the same
in a funny kind of way
I don't even mind"

The first 2 lines state what one would pretty much expect. Line 3 is kind of a throw away and line 4 begs the question, Why? or Why not? Just some thoughts.

Scott: I was wondering if I would sneak that poll/all past everybody (ha, ha). This is my kind of music, I wish it was still popular! Thanks for the visit.

Charles: thanks for stopping by and giving it a listen.

Ricki: I sort of felt the same about that stanza. little "too much" throwaway (even for me!). Thanks for the visit and comments.

I'm waiting on Slap Johnson to put a sax solo on this. We'll see what happens.

Slap Johnson was kind enough to add a sax part to Ole Stomping ground! He's is a pretty soulful and talented player. very nice addition. I wish my singing could so his playing justice!

I also modified the last verse, but I am not happy with the flow of the words yet. More work to do on that.

I like this tune, has that 1970s feel to it.
I agree with you on the last part of the tune the flow seems to get interupted, if you see you can fix it.Good tune

I always liked your voice, Kevin, thought you sounded great! smile This is a nice song about nostalgia, I like how it's done. Loved all the individual instruments getting their time in. The sax was fabulous!

Dan: You missed the sax guy!!! Thanks for the visit and the kind comments.

Paul: I've reworked the end again, but still needs some more work. Thanks for stopping by.

Polly: Hey, thanks for coming by and listening. The sax was a pleasant surprise!

Scott: yea, I love that sax part. Makes my stuff sound weak in comparison.

I'll come back tomorrow for the others.

Kevin, I agree with Joice, more "Band" than "Morrison" IMO.

I'd like to hear more "chop" in the rhythm instruments, they're all pretty smooth and legato. Yes, love the sax. I really like the three chord move in the chorus. Maybe some more reverb on the bg vocal, or make it sound "further away" not by reducing volume but by trimming some of the "air" off it, like a high shelf from about 8k on up.

My trick...well, it's not mine LOL...is to put a low shelf on about 150 down on every instrument except the bass and kick drum. That gives them definition without turning them up, and nothing else really needs it.

Anyway, it's one of my favorite sub-genres. The Band, Morrison, all the guys who were "Dylan goes to New Orleans." Good stuff.

Mike

Hi Kevin I am a sucker for a sax and knew right away that I would love this. Van the man would be proud to have written or performed this. This is right up my boulevard. Loved it....no nits except I wished I could have sung it.

Bob: Thanks for the visit and the kind words! I hope all is well.

Stacey: Welcome to the JPF, I haven't seen you around. Thanks for taking to the time to stop by and giving it a listen.

Joice: Thanks for coming back for another spin!

Mike D: Dang, I was hoping you were going to review "Waiting on A Ring" (ha ha). I'll try that low shelf thing, as well as some of the suggestions on the BG vocals. I need to learn more about that type stuff. Thanks for the visit.

Big Jim: Thanks for the visit. I actually thought about you on this tune -- especially after that sax solo! Hmmmmm.....

Hi Kevin,

Very well done. I can also hear this one done in the new country style. There are a lot of country nostalgia sings out right now about going back to our roots, and room for more. I like the laid back feel.

Have a goodun,

Here's a better tune about going home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlXpUhAWRWs (by Miranda Lambert, written by tom douglas and allen shamblin).

Gus: Thanks for giving this one a visit. I hope all is well!

Dave: Thanks for the double dose of kind words!!

Glyn: The fiddle had the 2nd lead slot until the sax guy came along. I'm sure that midi-fiddle guy didn't mind (ha, ha). Thanks for stopping by!

John: Thanks for giving it a spin. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Gus II: Hello again!

There is no rip off here. It is a terrific song. It has a great flavor and texture. Nice pace - just right and not rushed. Nice backup vocals that add to it. Nice guitar work. Clear, sweet recording. No mud. Nice, nice one.

Tom: Thanks for the visit and the kind words. How's Justice's new CD going?

I may leave that lyric as is -- just need to practice singing it a little more.
