I frequently talk about my cat "Cupcake". He is a feral cat that my brother found in the woods. He has become a loving pet.
He was bitten today by a pygmy rattler. He evidentially caught the snake and brought it to my neighbors house and my neighbor killed the snake.
It looks like Cupcake was bitten on the leg. He is lethargic and currently sleeping on my brothers computer chair.
We called the Vet. They said that his symptoms look OK for now and that there is a chance that the poison may not kill him because he was bitten on the leg, I don't know what the odds are. We have to watch him for the next 24-48 hours. They say that using anti-venom would be too late now.

Sorry about that Ben Lets hope. Yep, that's what I've always been told --The nearer the heart, the lesser their chances. Small animals like cats don't have the "bulk" to resist it as well. Nevertheless, it's apparently been a while, so Cupcake should have a good fighting chance Hang in Cupcake Wy

We put two and two together when my neighbor came over an told me that he killed a pygmy rattler on his back porch. Then "Cup" came home with fang marks on his leg. "Cup" must have found the snake and brought it to the neighbor.
I only hope that the venom wasn't that strong. The Vet says that he should be hurling if poisoned. He's not. He's still sleeping.

Ben, Clifford (our son's dog), got bit back in the Spring by a rattlesnake after he got home to California. He got treated with antivenom immediately after the bite and still was sick for over a week. In fact, the antivenom has some bad side effects like bleeding. I've since heard that animals have a built in protection from snake bites-they swell up and then they get better. I just knew Clifford was going to die even with the antivenom but he didn't.

Trish, thanks for the positive side. It looks good so far, but as a dad, I'm still worried. I look at those fang marks on his little leg and get worried. It was a Pygmy rattler and not a full sized snake so maybe the venom wasn't as bad.

He's still sleeping, but he wags his tail when I call him. His squeaky toy (with peppermint) is with him.

Ben, didn't someone instruct you to cut an incision from the bite outward...one at the top and bottom of each bite wound? It helps the poison leak out.
Anyway, I hope and PRAY Cupcake is okay. Geez, after the Squeaky Fromme toy ordeal, I just want this cat to chill out and go moderatately on the cat nip.
Give him lots of water, Ben. Just keep it near his head and make sure he drinks. It'll detoxify him (worked for me after a poisonous night at the bar).
Pygmy rattle snakes in FL are the second deadliest snakes...I learned that little fun fact after playing there once.

The first is a Coral snake (relitave to a Cobra, mean snake). CC is doing fine so far. He's getting a lot of attention.

I've been sleeping off the poison for many years, hopefully Cupcake will be just as successful.

Hey Ben, NO WORRIES. It'll take more than some ole snake to bring down this fella: http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/701200/page/1#Post701200Seriously, hope he's still coming along okay. I'd think if he hasn't gotten any worse, then you should be out of the woods. In the meantime, my Little D. would like to offer his advice to Cupcake, should he encounter that critter again (well, a relative anyway, since CC seems to have taken care of the first one!! ).... Good luck!! xoxo, Beth, Milo & Little D.

Thanks, I'm keeping him inside today but he wants to go out. He's walking a little crooked from the bite but he's eating.

Hi Ben:
You've had lots of Cat calamities lately. I hope "Cup" continues to improve. Maybe this will serve to warn him away from those slinky, crawly things. Please keep us posted.

WOW!I just saw this. That's a bummer. It seems like Cupcake is doing better but keep a close watch on him. Unless the venom does things differently on a cat than a dog it will screw with the blood.

The vet said that he should be out of the woods in 24-48 hours. It's been almost 24 now. He's sitting on the window sill looking outside right now. He isn't lethargic anymore. He's unusually quiet though. He's usually aggressive and getting into trouble.

Cupcake is my hero. He protected me from that mean old rattle snake. I'll have to keep an eye on him though.
He want's to go outside so bad, but his little leg bothers him.

I love cats. I'm glad he is better, but if he wants to go outside, let him, there is probably something in the wild that is a cure for what ails him, animals have an instinct about these things.

Awe, thank goodness CC is doing better. My aunt's dog had puppies, three of them were killed by copperheads. Glad to see Cupcake was tougher than the snake. Pigmey rattlers are out this year, but most of what I've seen are chicken snakes and copperheads. UGH!! Give me a little one I can kill with my shovel any day!

Thanks Scott, it looks like he's back to his ol' mean self. I just tried to pet him and he snapped at me. No respect. Typical "Cupcake". I call him the "snake charmer" now.

Wait! Is CC a boy or a girl??? I'm confused all of a sudden.
Edit! I see CC's a HIM. I thought CC was a HER. So sorry!
