The recording is better...
Not sure the performance is any better or worse. No matter - was a good excuse to hear it again. One of my favorites of yours...

Louis,
I don't believe I heard the original, but I find it hard to believe it was horrible. This one sure sounds nice.
A little solo violin would be nice. Or, add instruments one at a time to build to a full middle and then back some of the instruments out towards the ending. The song is good as is, but it is always nice to do different things with it.

I like the honesty in your voice. A little cello would add a nice touch as well~

I remember this one well - it is definitely one of my favorite Louis tunes. The recording quality is excellent on this take. You should submit this to some places for publication. Great tune!

Thanks for visiting the blog Louis! We're making slow progress in a very poor and tough part of the world but I guess every little helps! I appreciate your taking the time to have a look.

Louis, I absolutely love this song.... it gave me chills......and I still have them. it is very good, in my ever so humble opinion.
However.... (don't you hate that, its like 'but') I hear some phrasing issues in both verse and chorus. Basically, I am hearing you cut off your phrases at times and entering into a new section too early. it's the drummer in me (ok, and some formal training with one of stan kenton's arranger/writers)
This song is sooooo good that I would recommend pushing it on but working out the phrasing first. it's very subtle and it would be awkward for you at first because you are used to its present state, but it would make for even better sound. If i can help or explain further, let me know
great song!

Thanks Dave, yeah I drive drummers crazy, lol.. I probably should've used a click track when I sang it.

Louis, This makes you feel like you're sittin' there listening to you perform it, it has a very human quality to it, a Dylan type harmonica would finish this off nicely. Good luck with it...Moker

Oh hey Moker, that's a great suggestion, I know a harp player too..

Louis, my only other comment would be to tell your harp player that less is more, don't play the sh*t out of the harp, kinda ease in and out of the harp parts so it keeps that same feel you have going...good luck with it...Moker

Louis, a click track is ok but that isn't your problem. you are just eliminating some beats. The steadiness of your beat seemed pretty good. Next time you listen, count along with it in a slow 1 -2, 1-2, or quicker 1,2,3,4.... You should find that your not giving enough of an ending to a phrase. (hmmmmm very hard to explain)

Louis, right now i'm focusing on the transition from verse to chorus. I'm counting your song in a slow '2' one...two, etc.
it's not the sustain of your notes, it's a phrasing matter.
The verse is 3 phrases of 4 2-beat groups. so it's kind of short. it flows well and the most common problem is to rush in the chorus.
The pick up into your chorus is a full two beats. "I remember" You're treatment of begining "I" on count one is throwing things a bit off. The more i listen and break it down, I want to sing "I" after count one and it becomes more of a pick up or lead into the chorus.
This is really hard to describe. give me some time please, i may have some suggestions. I'm wondering if others hear what i am or not.
Dave

Hi Louis,
I just got around to listening to this, and This Old Quilt. This is my kind of writing. I prefer story songs. What country started off as, and I wish still was. I'm in the middle of chronicling some of my mothers family in song. I just got done one about how my parents met in Texas. Now I have to get them to music, and demoed. It'll all come, in time. If you get some time, please check out my lyric posts for My Uncle Earl, and Rebels From The Northlands in Lyrics #3. I'd like your opinion. Good luck with yours.
