I did a quick Google search and verified that Poor Wayfaring Stranger is traditional, thus PD.
The closest I came to the other one was "I'm going home to live with my Lord" but was unable to determine if it is PD or not although I suspect it is.

Thanks Lady F!
So I assume there is no standard place to check this issue?

You might try checking the US copyright office.

Type into a search engine: SONGS IN PUBLIC DOMAIN. There was a Web Site you could search.

Cyberhymnal was the first place I checked (it's one of my favorite sites) and found a copyrighted ARRANGEMENT (I was underwhelmed by it, btw) of Wayfaring Stranger. The song itself is PD. The other one didn't show up there.

So how complete are these sites? I was looking to see if a specific old Gospel hymn ("Turn Your Radio On") was public domain or not, and it didn't show up on either of these lists. Does that mean it's definitely not PD? If not, where do I look further? I googled the thing, and found a lot of copyrighted *arrangements*, but nothing to indicate whether the song itself was still under copyright.
The Library of Congress said (online) they could help, but it'd take them 2 to 5 *weeks*. They didn't say whether they were charging for this service (so I didn't tell 'em whether I wanted it).

Turn Your Radio on was written by Albert E. Brumley in 1938 which would not be Public Domain.

You might want to search on the Harry Fox site. If it's a published tune, non public domain, it may show up in their catalog.

There are "song clearance companies" that will do a search for a small fee.TV shows, movies, record companies use these companys all the time. They will cite all the info, publisher, writer, copyright info, and sometimes the recording info and a lot of other information that could save you some problems .. Dude... http://songconsultant.com
