Although I'm in awe of Bacharach's elegant melodic work, I find I am most moved by the beauty that can be found in simplicity. Most recently Max Richter's piano theme for "The Leftovers" --with a melody that's maybe..I dunno..ten notes overall? Direct, emotional, simple..somehow it's an emotional gut-punch to me--so very beautifully sad to my ears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsvda1AP6woMichael Giachinno's "Life and Death" theme for "Lost" makes me cry every time, while my intelliect balks, thinking "he's just outlining the chords C major and e minor," my heart thoroughly crumbles..and it's not tied to watching the TV show anymore--it's been several years and the music has the same effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twHXrNtG-7c

If we are talking purely about Melody, it would have to be "Sarah's Song" by Phil Cunningham. It's achingly simple, and its simplicity allows a musician to grab hold of it and squeeze every last drop of beauty out of it, as Aly Bain on the fiddle does here, when he comes in about half way through. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsd8dU89qwI first heard this on A Prairie Home Companion years ago and I've yet to hear a better version. I have it on CD, but somehow, it doesn't compare. I found the Prairie Home Companion version here: http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/20000401/
