Hi Folks,
Note to self: Don't send out a newsletter the same night that the final of American Idol is on.
The website traffic was up a little but the amount of people sending me emails as a normal follow up to any given newsletter was very low. (Less than 100.. which is about 1/5th of a normal day and 1/10th of a newsletter day). After I sent it out last night I realized that it was up against American Idol. I've actually noticed a significant decrease in site traffic during the hours it shows across the US. It's actually trackable. Even though we've set new records in website traffic each of the last 12 consecutive months, for that time period (8-11PM US Eastern Time), it dips. Now I know it has the same effect on the newsletter. I hope folks will read at least the top article about the Internet bill that comes up tommorow. If you missed it, please read yesterday's blog.
Remember we have about a week to enter the Lyric Awards. We're going to cut off Video entries on June 30th. If anyone has a finished album to substitute for an earlier submitted demo (an offer we made to everyone) please get that final version sent in to us before June 30th. That's as long as we can wait for anything new. We'll be finalizing the nominations in July and August and will likely announce the nominees early September.
I also need suggestions for the awards venue. Let me know if you have suggestions. It's helpful if you actually have a contact/connection with the venue. Names alone won't get us very far.
I am still awake from yesterday morning so I am going to cut this blog short for now. I might pop back on later and add some more when I am actually alert and awake! = )

Are you saying you get 500 emails a day on a normal day and 1000 after a newsletter? Wow that's alot! On top of everything you do on the boards, and the awards, right? geez, you're a busy guy.

Herbie,
Yeah, a normal day is about 400-600. Keep in mind that 300 of those are often people's gig announcements etc. Usually there's only about 100 I have to really interact with.
I think my theory was correct because today I am finally getting the normal feedback I would get from a newsletter. Normally the email gets back to normal the day after, but today I am getting far more email than normal and more than I got yesterday. There's really no disputing AI's impact on everything. It's like the Super Bowl on 2 times a week. I actually enjoy it as a fun distraction that is music related which I don't have to do anything but watch. But I now know next year not to send out the newsletter when everyone is watching that show. I'd HATE to be working on a TV show that was up against it.
