Good Mornin' Pete! [Linked Image]

Sure is good to see you back posting...and with a real name! Hang around awhile, ya hear! It is easy when someone posts a song with a theme of religion or politics for folks to get a bit derailed...but this IS a lyric site..and comments and suggestions on lyrical structure and flow ARE what we hope for here...at least most of us! Thanks for the perspective on the accountability line. I'll be looking at that one...since that is the one segment of this I am least satisfied with. Thanks again.

Hugs,
Bobbie

Thanks Cat...you do mean tonite as in Sunday pm? My tv rarely works here...so I don't get to see much of it..not sure when stuff comes on. I did see a CNN interview with them after they performed their new song..I'm Not Ready To Play Nice (or Make Nice, not sure)...and some others like Neil Young, Bon Jovi, etc..talking about protest songs. Probably isn't the same interview so I will have to see if I can catch this one. Thanks for the heads up.

Hugs,
Bobbie

IMO, Natalie Maines did not do a smart thing by announcing publicly that she was ashamed of the president. If she was ashamed, that's her right and she can't deny her feelings; but she shouldn't have broadcast it to the public.

When you're an entertainer, you must be careful what you say, unless you want it to come back and slap you in the face...which is what happened to the Dixie Chicks.

Back in the '60s, John Lennon was quoted as saying that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ..but it was taken out of context. What the press didn't report is that he was not bragging about it, he was COMPLAINING. He didn't think it was right.

So the BOTTOM LINE is: When you're famous, there is a price to pay for everything you say [Linked Image] It's up to you to decide if the consequence is worth it.

Shayneman,

You've hit on an important point. Quotes made by public figures, entertainers, and politicians, or found in literature and art, will be taken out of context and even changed by people to further some ideology or agenda. This happens often with the Bible. For example, people will tell you the Bible says, "Money is the root of all evil," but what Timothy 6:10 says is, "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil." Big difference.

All the Best,
Mike

While some of what you say, Shayne, may in fact, be true...what happened to the Chicks crossed over into censorship, which is illegal in this country (at least it was the last I checked the Constitution). When radio stations refuse to play someone's music because the artists publicly state their political views..THAT is worse than anyone saying they are ashamed of the president, IMO, regardless of their role in entertainment. The reason our folks are fighting (supposedly) is to protect our rights..when some, right here in this country flagrantly try to take them away.

Bobbie

Well, Ms Bobbie, I haven't checked the Constitution in a loooong time, but my understanding would be that it would refer to censorship by the government. I think private citizens have the right to deal with/buy from/listen to whomever they choose. This would be more of a boycott than censorship, and a boycott would not be illegal, IMO. (Hey, they refuse to play my songs too, lol [Linked Image]) Now this may get a little touchy because the airwaves are licensed by the government. However, that's basically with the understanding that they remain responsive to the listening public, which they probably were in this case. To change the subject a little, I missed it last night. What did Nat have to say on 60 Minutes?

The interview started out with with a rather ackward Nat saying "Apoligize for what?" She looked like she had never heard the the question before. She didn't even get her own quote correct- the interviewer had to correct her. I like the Dixie Chicks and was hoping Nat would say something like, "I have to be who I am but I should probably have not have been so offensive" There was a whole lot more defiance and no apology of any kind. The girls even went one step farther and insulted country music in general- one of the Chicks saying, she cannot listen to country radio anymore. When the question about fans was brought up- the clear message, although not spoken directly, was, 'we are not going to compromise anything just to please fans.' I think they blew an oportunity to take advantage of the fact that their opinion of the war has been autheniticated by the opinion polls. They could have offered support for the troops and held proudly to their opinion on the war but they just looked like some clueless self obsorbed rich chicks. I was disipointed that these gals, who are so good a expressing themselves in music, are so poor at expressing themselves in an interview-but who knows what was left out. I work in the television industry and I would love to see what 60 minutes DIDN'T edit into the story. They may have gotten a bad rap if someone in the edit room was out to get them.

Howdy Mike,

Yep..and in this day and age of film editing...who knows the context of a lot of quotes that make someone appear to be saying something that, if taken in context would mean something diametrically different. Film editors have a LOT of power to make or break someone these days. Sad. [Linked Image]

Howdy Bill,

Yep..and since the airwaves are regulated by the government..supposedly both TV and radio are supposed to be neutral. When a specific station or group of stations chooses to air or not to air specific material BECAUSE of someone's political leanings, that is what is considered censorship. Personally and professionally, I don't like to have some station manager whose politics are different from mine, making it impossible for me to hear the music I want to hear. I think that is wrong and yes it is totally up to us to purchase or not to purchase music...but it has to be 'available' first in order to have that choice.

Hugs,
Bobbie

Howdy Cat,

Thanks for the update...since I wasn't able to get 60 Minutes last night after all! I was hoping someone would tell us what happened. I am sorry to hear that it sounded awkward...but as Mike pointed out (above) and as you well know..a judicious film editor can make someone look pretty foolish if they so choose. I happen to like the Chicks...love their music. I, for one, am glad they aren't about to compromise. We have plenty of that going on all around us...people, especially political hacks saying whatever is convenient for them so they can spin it to their political advantage. I much prefer the chicks to retain their integrity in spite of the flack they are getting. Like you...I'd love to see what 60 Minutes did NOT show. You can bet now that they are sorta back in the limelight..that this will not be the last interview. Hopefully, things will improve.

Thanks again for letting us know what happened.

Hugs,
Bobbie

Bobbie, someone must have snuck that neutrality clause past the networks and NPR, ha. But enough of this. You and Dawg would have had a good battle on this I bet. And don't send Bob Young after me. I'm done. I give up [Linked Image]

To whomever said "Sixty Minutes' may have edited to make the Mange chick look bad.....that's a four diaphragm belly buster.
That motley crew would give their left .... to make the president disappear. All, I can figure is the rest of the interview was so abominable, they were left with no choice.

Tall Terry made some TOTALLY plausible (no..
ACCURATE!) comments throughout this thread (way to be Terry!) Too many libs take the spoon feeding of the liberal mainstream as gospel and it is such a pity.I considered myself a liberal (though I wasn't heavily into politics) into my thirties. Got to talking to a guy I had much respect for, not only for his basic decency, but an IQ higher than my own. He suggested I read a couple of relevant books on the differences between Dems & Reps; then to follow that by listening to the "DREADED" Rush Limbaugh, who, of course, has since been discredited for his subscription drug prob!! (WHAT A CROCK)Well, guess what....he ain't EVEN close to what I was led to believe earlier. That crap gets put out as front page news, but the dismissal is only bandied in conservative circles. Just like that INCREDIBLE B.S. perpetuated once more by liberal Dems, wherein they claim George W went to war for his Dad. AND for oil. That is beyond imbecilic, and would be laughable if not for the fact plenty of the minions TRULY believe it. I daresay, the originators of this tripe know better, but they know their audience! Why is it you rarely hear any good things about black Republican officials? After all, it is the racist party! I'm independent, but if forced to make a choice, it would be not even be close.
The same media that discredits Rush is the same media that does it to Bernie Goldberg.
One other thing, on the subject of that hussy, Ann Coulter...sure she can come across as shrill in sound bites and on programs where she has VERY little time. I've read her. She KNOWS the press would nail her butt in a heartbeat, IF THEY COULD! She has the most detailed footnotes of anyone I have ever read and, trust me, I am VERY well read. She knows whose ready to leap, but, thus far, all they can do is call her names!
How I wish more otherwise intelligent, compassionate people, who stand with the Kennedys and Leahys, would (with an OPEN mind) give a listen to Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Glenn Beck or Rush. As alluded to earlier, I have seen it from both sides. I simply didn't have the facts before, as I actually BELIEVED the New York Times, from which every single network broadcast (and CNN) gets their stories. Now that I know better, it is sorrowful joke, but 'tis also a joy to see their 50 year monopoly on interpreting the news eroding faster than jello in a floodzone.

Bobbie: Well! Well! Well! haven't we ruffled a few feathers. All I can say is God Bless Ya. Is is so tempting (to me sometimes)to want to go after someone who takes the opposite view as you or I, but so so more effective when you write a clever song. This one has many good rhymes and along with lots of down to earth wisdom. Basically says some real solid rational real things about our country. Things that need to said more and more.

Cause I don't want to read some day in the news that we have reached the 50,000-th American soldier's death in Iraq, just like I did whan the Viet Nam War was a blazin.

Our young guys and gals are young strong brave hearted Americans and are our future.

Some are mothers and fathers and each one that is killed represents more than just one person, it repesents the tearing apart of a family unit, and unspeakable pain to their sons and daughters--That aint no rhetoric, that's the low down fact.

YOu go girl!!!

Well, Bobbie, your majority comment has got me slip-sliding away! [Linked Image] If u r referring to the houses and the presidency, guess we'll see in november. Far as approval #'s.....what a fickle figure! Could change overnight! I can assure you, much of the disenfranchisement on the right toward the prez, comes down to two issues. Border security and giveaways (increased spending).

Forgot to mention that the story ended with 60 minutes playing the last part of the Chick's new music video, "Not ready to make nice". Last scene: a closeup of Nat's big clear eyes that could drill a hole through you. Let's pitch them a song. Humm.. what should it be?

Howdy Paul,

Yes..most of my non-songwriting friends are even learning to NOT say certain things to me because they realize that what they say may very well turn up in a song on the radio someday! At least my smarter friends have learned that. Some still slip once in awhile and then they get that OH NO look on their face when they see me reach for my pen!! LOL I do think that writing a good song about some of the important issues of the day IS the best thing we can do with our gifts. Obviously, in a case like this one...those lyrics are bound to speak to folks in different ways. Some will hate them, some will think they are great...and some, well, some will probably not understand or care in the slightest. But to me...some things...issues...and questions need to be put under the spotlight of public opinion..and music can do that. I am glad this spoke to you. A lot of us suffered through Nam..even those who were not fighting over there..and probably a lot of us kept our real feelings quiet so as not to be unpatriotic. But, fortunately, as I have aged, my tolerance for drivel has lessened. When I see drivel..I call it drivel..and when someone tries to spoonfeed it to me..I refuse to swallow anymore. As you said..enough is enough! [Linked Image]

Howdy Ben,

You are right on two counts...we don't know what will happen between now and November...and those popularity polls are pretty meaningless. However, the issues you mentioned would certainly NOT have been high on my list...I'd be looking at things like corruption in the highest levels of administration, the war (and its REAL costs in terms of lives AND money), domestic spying, the overall economy, the environment...and gas prices. Lot of additional factors that will come into play by the time November rolls around. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. If little Bush runs..that will sure put the right in an interesting position! I kinda hope he does to be honest. [Linked Image]

Howdy Cat,

I have a couple I'd love to get to the Chicks...but not this one. This needs to be done by someone like Neil Young because it talks ABOUT the Chicks and they wouldn't sing something about themselves..at least I doubt they would. I actually could get this to them if I wanted to...their producer, Blake Chancey's father, Ron, wants to work with me on a totally unrelated project of his. I may send this to Blake just for kicks. I am so sorry I missed the show!

Hugs,
Bobbie

Good on ya Bobbie. Well said.
Too long though Love.
I sang along fine, shifting and killing the od word here and there at a sort of Ray Charles in Country mode medium clip to give me time to say the words and got half way through the bridge when the backing ai was singing it to, which happens to me one I made of Are Ypou Lonesome Tonight (the full and real lyric version), which I made to sing that song to in Ray Charles gone country mode.
And I wasn't doing the chorus repeats by the way.
To the issue, and away from the song totally.
Of course folks hang on and bend words of famous people.
That doesn't mean they lose the right to have and speak a mind of their own.
Trim it some Bobby and I believe you have a good one.
It could be sung as is, but eleven minute songs are rarely listened to.
I saw a good pic today the do anything to please the current God crew.
I may find it and put it in a post in general or somewhere.
Graham

Bobbie,
You said "I'd be looking at things like corruption in the highest levels of administration, the war (and its REAL costs in terms of lives AND money), domestic spying, the overall economy, the environment...and gas prices."

okay, point by point
1)Domestic spying (red herring, was around during the Clinton years but never created a ripple). Not gonna find a more private person than me, but I ain't about to try and preclude TERRORIST SPYING!
2)The economy is in incredibly good shape. Unemployment at a record low. You don't see anything positive played up for a Republican administration by the media; rather you get disinfo from all the mainstream. [Linked Image]
3)Gas prices. Only the truly uninformed would dare go here. "OOOOhhhh, he's padding his pockets by keeping gas prices high!" Have neither the time or energy (no pun intended) to attempt to tackle this one. Can only ask the one's who are "right and I don't care what you say" to listen to the people I mentioned earlier. They are NOT at all radical. Now, gas prices lead to the environmental issue.
4)The environment. Well, well a pet Democrat issue that gets trotted out constantly when we have a Rep administration (or at voting time, along with destroying social sec, and starving children). What exactly did the tree huggers (Cliton/Gore) do in EIGHT years in this regard? The greatest irony of all lies in the fact that we (conservatives) would be drilling (not haphazardly, I might add) in Anwar & offshore in a flash, but since it's such a big Dem issue, many conservatives are afraid to chance it and say, "Screw you! You WANT lower gas prices...we're drilling!"
Now, Bob, you know I'm typewriter challenged, which is why I rarely get into this sort of thing (unless it is a lyric!!! [Linked Image])
Ben
BTW, a friend of mine sent me something that blew my mind! Check it out (and if it's made outta wholecloth, it's news to me). I believe it's serious. Okay, just emailed you, since it requires downloading, I can't put it on this site, but you can tell everyone what you saw (a lot faster than I! [Linked Image])

Hi Bobbie,

Nice song, but I agree with one assessment, I think didactic lyrics, protest or topical songs, are better off treating one issue at a time.

Funny how so many people are polarized these days, as if there were only two points of view to every issue. A long time ago I told one of my best friends, an older and wiser fellow who was a retired lawyer and naval commander (how's that for a combination?) that I was a liberal. He smiled and started asking my opinions on different subjects while he took notes like a newspaper reporter. It ended up that I had some opinions that were liberal, some that were conservative, and some that were neither.

Nowdays, with the media expansion, cable, the internet and talk radio, there are a lot of personalities who present their opinions as if they were right and others were wrong. Most often, they talk in soundbytes and don't argue on the merits of fact but rather make ad hominem attacks. Also, most often, they agree nearly completely from one party platform or the other. It makes me wonder how many people think Jon Stewart or Rush Limbaugh are actually newsmen, rather than biased entertainers or commenators?

Now, I wouldn't be surprised to have responses here defending their guy as unbiased, but the other guy as being so. It's kind of funny if weren't so serious. Both major U.S. political ideologies have spent a lot of money on think tanks to help them strategize. One of the most effective strategies has been to anger one's base by demonizing one's opponent. I'll bet our real enemies love to see that coming from both sides (shades of John McCain's recent comments, eh?)

Maybe, someday we'll finally get to a real exchange of ideas among ladies and gentlemen. Actually this thread has been very civil and polite. It gives me hope.

All the Best,
Mike

Howdy Ben,

Thanks SO much for sending me that wmv. For those who don't have a clue what Ben and I are talking about..he sent me a video to view of a gentleman who has developed a motor that runs on (are you ready for this?) WATER. Yep. If this can really work...at least some of our problems today can be greatly diminished. Can you say "eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels"?

As for the rest of your ideology..I prefer to not derail an honest attempt at a lyric into continued belaboring of individual disagreements over political issues. We all have our perceptions and rationale for why we believe as we do. I won't try to change your mind if you won't waste your time trying to change mine. It just doesn't work...for much of the same reason that trying to convince someone else to see the light of religion the same way you do. Arguing your viewpoint just doesn't work. If you don't like my lyric...you are free to write your own from your perspective. Might just be more effective!

Hugs,
Bobbie

Howdy Mike,

Actually, this lyric only does have one issue..the right to speak out on things we believe in. It merely uses the other issues to support that. Guess that can be viewed differently...but that was how I chose to do it. Sorta like BLOWIN IN THE WIND.

In all truth, I am definitely on the very conservative side on some issues..moderate on others, and liberal on others. I vote as an independent..and have voted Republican and Democrat based on the individual's position on issues I care about. Because of 30 years of working in government service...I learned to be quite fiscally conservative. Now that I work in the grants field...I see where the money goes...and believe me..some of the things that government money gets spent on is utterly amazing.

Couldn't agree with you more on this!! [Linked Image] "Both major U.S. political ideologies have spent a lot of money on think tanks to help them strategize. One of the most effective strategies has been to anger one's base by demonizing one's opponent. I'll bet our real enemies love to see that coming from both sides (shades of John McCain's recent comments, eh?)" I am so sick and tired of "SPIN" that whenever I hear it from either source...I just say DRIVEL! That is all it is.

Having refereed bouts between Dawg and Bob Young...I figure I have the experience to try to keep things on a fairly even keel. At least that is my hope even when I knowingly posted something I knew wouldn't sit easy with some folks round here. [Linked Image]

Thanks for dropping in.

Hugs,
Bobbie
