Hi Charlie.... Hmmmm....for a man who's plumb out of lyrics, you sure have a lot to say (LOL). Maybe we can make that into a song somehow.....let me take a better look at that..... ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Written in stone? Moi? Well...maybe once or twice. However, I do have additional good news about one that had a word or so written in stone. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) I'll let you know soon.... ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif) (think we ended up compromising anyway) Now....I will add my two cents to what you just said and say....compromise is sometimes the secret. If one co-writer wants something changed....and the other co-writer doesn't totally agree with the suggested change...there is always compromise. A true necessity in co-writing. I have also (not with you, though) been willing to drop a project altogether just to save the co-lab relationship. A GOOD co-writing relationship is not worth risking over one song. Having said that....sure am glad we work so well together ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Thanks, Charlie....we've got more to come. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) (I had more smilies than this, but the board will only let me use 8 in one post)

Not to put a damper on your success ( I was very excited when I got my first contract also). But for the record, a publishing company's job is to "collect" copyrights so don't give them away to easily.
There are lots of company's out there that simply collect great sounding demos.. (i:e: no investment on their part). Then they can sit back and do nothing and just hope that YOU believe in the song enough that you will pitch it yourself and get a cut. If that happens, they get 50% for doing nothing more than having you sign a little piece of paper.
Why would I not want to be published?? you ask>>>??
#1, if you're offered a contract, make sure it includes that THEY pay for a new professional demo #2, make sure it has a reversion clause so that you can get the song back #3, before giving away your publishing, as the publisher what songs they have had CUT in the past.
I'll be the first to say congrats..... just be careful what you give away and make sure you get something back.
Kindest regards, Kay-lynn Nashville, TN

Congrsatulations You pair. Tha5t first contract is a great feeling. I know . I had it until I read the fine print on the two I was offered. My Born To Be Blue and Jud7y and my 'Til Sunday had contracts offered bit when they arived, we neither needed a lawyer to tell us tyhey had an odor to them that wasn't prety. We did the Trade lawyer trick. Sent Judy off to Art Law Centre and they confirmed our worst suspicions. I hope you guys have better luck. Do check with the lawyers though. Down here Art Law Centre is a cheap way to do it and i am sure you guys have the same sort of tyhing up there. maybe even got a tame one or two in JPF who can help. When I read Redwriters comments it rang the bells for me as mid all the excitement, we still have to look at the business side of things. So I drop my little bit of an anicdote in here toward that aspect. keep at it Sunny and Charlie. We are all rooting for you. Regards. keep at it you two! I got a publishing contract in the mail on Friday. At first I was pretty darn pleased with myself, but after a good read I realized the terms were too much in their favor. I've offered some terms of my own and I'll see what happens. If they come back THEN I'll go to the attorney. Redwriter makes some points I agree with so watch out for yourselves. Still think we deserve the pats on the back because its all progress. Good Luck!!

Hi redwriter1, Don't believe we've met (Kay-lynn Carew, right?), so your visit to this thread is all the more meaningful to me. Thanks. At the great risk of sounding like I know it all, I've written songs since 1975 and have actually received my share of publishing contracts in the past. But it is still nice to get all excited about one, especially since I've been out of it for so long (have not written in six years). Yes, many publishers are actually like glorified songpluggers with maybe just a little more at stake -- but we have been selective. Without going into too much detail, the prospective publishers/producers our submissions were sent to have been carefully chosen. The one(s) that we have clicked with (yes, there may be MORE news coming!) have actually had rather decent track records and even produced albums of their own, as recently as this year. There is naturally a reversion clause, as I have always insisted upon in the past, although the time period is something we are negotiating at the moment. As for demos, at the additional risk of sounding a little too self-confident, the demos we have now are probably pretty close in sound, IMHO, to what one can hear on the radio daily. Again, thank you for your kind sentiments and Highly Worthwhile advice. BTW I bumped around a bit on your MP3.com site, very nice... ------------------ Best Regards and Aloha, Charlie http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Wong_Songs/index-1.html

Hello Graham, Yes, we compared this contract to some others that other people have had reviewed (and recommended/approved) by an industry pro, and it is word-for-word the same. I think the model most publishers use now is a variation of the "Popular Songwriter's Contract" that has been in existence back since at least my first publishing contract, which was in the late 70s. Thanks for the rooting comment -- we Are all in this together, ya know. ------------------ Best Regards and Aloha, Charlie http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Wong_Songs/index-1.html [This message has been edited by MR Bulk (edited 10-02-2001).]

Hay Eddie, So you got a contract offer, too? Congratulations! I think when all is said and done, although contracts are indeed the first step, the real winners will be those who can drive down the road in their car one day and hear THEIR SONG on the radio! ------------------ Best Regards and Aloha, Charlie http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Wong_Songs/index-1.html

HI redwriter...and Graham.... So far, perhaps we have been lucky. This is my second contract (first one was with Wyman), and neither has asked for money or tried to escape without a reversion clause. Both publishers also have a list of songs they've placed and had recorded. Believe me, if they ever wanted money for a demo....they wouldn't get it from me. And....no reversion clause, no contract. As I said, perhaps we've just been lucky...or perhaps the industry is improving. Thank you both for your generous advice. We will definitely keep these facts in mind. And....thank you for sharing our good news. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif)

Hi, I know this is ancient history by now, but I'm curious how this all worked out? I found this thread searching around for something else and it was interesting. Now I want to know the rest of the story! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Thanks! Congratulations, Guys. I wasn't able to stream the file at your site or Sharon's unfortunately. I did try, though.
P.S. I hope you get at least one gazillion bucks back.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek
