This one arose from a recent "shoulder" session with a friend of mine with frequent and consistent woman problems. I did something a bit different with the chorus in this...Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Baggage © 2005 Lyrics by Bobbie Gallup ASCAP
Don't flush the toilet hon... I think you're gonna drown You've gotten in so deep... Guess it's time to shut your mouth Cause ev'ry gal you ever had Needed to throw her baggage out
CHORUS: You can take it or leave it But you better believe it She's got baggage
You can't fix their problems When things stop going right Instead'a gettin' married You outta run for your life Keep those tags on the handle Cause your name ain't Samsonite
CHORUS: You can take it or leave it But you better believe it She's got baggage Being a perpetual fixer May feel like an elixir But she's got baggage
You like being that knight in armor And wearin' that white hat You keep rushin' to the rescue And gettin' busted flat But you're wasting your heart And you don't need no more of that
CHORUS: You can take it or leave it But you better believe it She's got baggage
They'll tell you success in the music biz is all about who you know...but the truth is...it's about who knows you. Gallup 'n Dawg Music

Hi Bobbie, I think you should try to play with a little more baggage imagery if you can. Maybe set up the Samsonite line with something about that Delilah. The fixer/elixir rhyme is cool. Maybe use it in some way for a bridge. I'm trying to envision a knight in shining armor wearing a white hat. It's kind of a silly mental image. Your opening line reminded me of one of my father's favorite sayings..."Her face was flushed, but her broad shoulders saved her." Kurt ------------------ http://www.kurtfortmeyer.com

Hi Bobbie, I can't get a hinge on the opening lines. . . for me, this song would need a less cryptic setup. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) My mother's favorite was: "Don't take root in there!" OUT-CHORUS idea? You can take it or leave it But you better believe it You ain't the baggage handler It's her that's got ta heave it. Terry

Howdy Kurt... It is so good to see you around this place!! Yowza! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) Thanks for taking time to check out this lyric. I was trying not to get caught up in the temptation to use so much baggage imagery here that the focus switched from it being about his response to the baggage issue over to her baggage, 'cause this is about him. I have been thinking about writing an alternative verse instead of the knight one to allow this to be sung by a female also. I will sure consider putting Delilah in there...but not sure if that gives a different direction to the Samsonite thing. Do you think people will even understand where that name came from? Lotta folks don't know the Bible stories all that well IMO. After you mentioned it...I can see the humor in the armor and the hat lines..though I suspect most folks without your wonderfully warped sense of humor will see it like it was intended! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) I may see about doing a bridge for this...not sure I want one...but will think some more on it. See what folks here think. Thanks again!! Sure appreciate the ideas!! Where do you hang out these days? Wonder why I never run into you? ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Hugs, Bobbie

I like Kurt's idea. It's ok the way it is, though. The trouble with the world is, we've all got some baggage. I like to keep mine in the closet to remind me how far I've come. ------------------ "Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you will land among the stars." -- Les Brown http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/triciabakermusic.htm
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Hi Bobbie!
Well I've read this a couple of times and sorry to say I just don't think I can be much help here. I like it the way it is, lol! Not sure about using "Delilah" as I think you may be right in your thoughts. My only other tiny nit is the line "And you don't need no more of that" doesn't sound just right to me. Nice write and a fun one also!

Howdy Tall One... LOL ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) so you were doing a bit of hydroponics, huh? Those first lines are just saying that if you are going under water...it is time to shut your mouth or you will drown. Nothing philosophical...more intended to be a bit of a humorous bent to things to set the stage for the tenor of this one. Will see if that outchorus idea will work with the music here. Sometimes changing a 3 liner to a 4 liner just doesn't work musically...but thanks for the good idea! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) Hugs, Bobbie

Howdy Mz Tricia,
LOL Well, I have heard that it is good to keep your friends close and your enemies closer...so I guess the closet would probably do...although I wouldn't keep any boyfriends in the closet. Gets ya in a buncha trubble from what I hear. The problem with baggage is that it hurts not only the one who has to haul it around, but also the ones who love them. Sadly...a lotta folks don't know when to dispense with their crap.
Hugs, Bobbie

Howdy David,
Thanks for checking this out and for dropping by with the affirmation. Maybe the reason that one line doesn't sound quite right is because it is grammatically incorrect. It should be And you don't need ANY more of that...but I couldn't use the two syllable word ANY..so stuck in what a lotta folks would actually say...which is NO more of that. Woe unto me...the old English teacher. LOL Thanks for the insights here.
Hugs, Bobbie

Howdy Ritt, LOL Perhaps you can't imagine anyone carrying on a conversation like this because we all seek out the level of conversation at which we feel most comfortable whether it be glass eating dinosaurs, pigs or friends with relationship issues. Go figure. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) Hugs, Bobbie

Bobbie, Just thought I'd take a shot at the chorus. Keep or sweep ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) You can take it or leave it But I suggest you git She's got baggage Instead'a gettin' married You outta run for your life You can't fix her problems You'll only end up in a fight (or maybe) She'll just cut you with her knife Keep those tags on Delila's handle Cause your name ain't Samsonite ------------------ Rebecca Dale Peaden

LOL Bobbie! Imagine that! Me giving you a lesson in grammar. I don't think so! Yeah I knew it was wrong but certainly wasn't going to point that out as I was aware you knew that it was. More than anything I was surprised to see you use it and wanted to see just why you did. Very unlike you IMHO. Ha! Now I have a comeback for ya on my country grammar, lol. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/wink.gif)

Howdy Dale, Those are some very interesting suggestions. Still not sure if I want to put ol' Delilah in there but will consider that idea. Don't think I wanna put the knife idea in there. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) Enough violence in this world without suggesting more ya know! Will keep those suggestions for any rewriting though! Thanks so much!! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Bobbie

LOL yeah, David...but you know what they say...before you can break the rules, you hafta know what they are. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) Actually I use grammar selectively in some of my country stuff depending on what sounds more conversational at times. Try to be careful though...and it does give me a twinge of guilt whenever I do it wrong deliberately. Hugs, Bobbie

Bobby, Maybe this one should have been kept at the "shoulder" session. I ain't getting it. It's hard to determine who's point of view this is; a man or a woman? I don't quite feel the flow. Maybe with alittle work you can clarify. Just my opinion.

Howdy Ric,
Well, unless you have heard a guy call another guy "hon"...LOL I am not too sure that issue isn't clarified in V1 L1. Then, just to be certain there isn;t any doubt...V3 talks about being a white knight. Doubt if too many women would want to be thought of as a knight. So I think it safe to say it would be a gal talking to a male friend. Sometimes it is easy to miss clues...but in this case, they really are there. Thanks so much for taking time to check this out and share your perspective. It is greatly appreciated.
Bobbie

Bobbie, I LOVE this!! There's some really great lines in here and I really like the one longer chorus. In fact I think you should make the longer one happen again at the end, because THAT is what really sums up this song. The "fixer/elixir" line is just too cool! This guy wants to be the white knight...for some guys it's intoxicating to be just that and they end up getting in the wrong relationship because of it. Just like woman who like bad boys and think they can change them. Anyway, you did a great job with this one. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Cindy

Hi Bobbie.... Welcome back. What's this about your Tennessee weather that always plays havoc with your communications infrastructure. I mean driving up to your place I know you have to skirt the odd blown over tree and all....oh I guess they use local trees to string those wires ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Just a try.... she's excess baggage" ??? Howdy Cindy, Guess I hadn't been paying enough attention to my own song lately...and hadn't responded to you. Thanks so very much for those gracious words!! Sure appreciate you taking time to check this out and let me know you enjoyed it. Actually, I have fixer tendencies myself..so am well aware of the issues involved...though folks'll probably say I am one of those who likes the bad boys..er dogs! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/biggrin.gif) Appreciate the read and remarks, my friend.
