Hi Folks,

This is the place to post public questions or comments on the 2002 Best Lyric Award entry's or process. You'll have to enter a reply as we aren't allowing new topics on this board.

Thanks,

Brian

Mondo Kewl, Brian!
I'm seeing a big number of new signatures (which I was hoping for), and we're getting to see a fine sampling of widely varied styles!
But, OOPS, already somebody didn't bother to check the [very simple] rules. Please ask them to decide which of their entries they'd like considered. If these are two different people from the same town, sharing the same name, I apologize well in advance....
This is fun; read every one carefully so far (except my own, in which my proofreading was so slack, I had to edit a couple times [Linked Image] ), and have already begun some "whittling". As I scroll through, it's quite easy for the titles to recall the pieces I particularly like; so whomever has the voting to do shouldn't find this a terribly hard go...

Enjoying it, Brian,
Thanks

[Edit]:
One small comment on "signatures". I don't really see these links as having anything to do with the specific lyric content that's posted here, and actually see it as kind of a "dodge" that puts me off a bit. As in: "You can only dig it properly if heard with the music..." That's just a personal take, but if I'm finding it a wee bit distasteful, others may too. I'm all in favor of self-advertising, but in this ONE instance, it may not seem appropriate; the lyric should speak for itself, no?
Comments appreciated, and I'll gladly change my viewpoint if properly convinced that I'm all wet! [Linked Image] (Not an uncommon thing fer me, BTW. [Linked Image] )

Pete, agree with you on the signature thing, although (out of habit) I hit the button [Linked Image] I could edit it off I suppose, as well could others, although the lyric I posted does not have music or appear on my Soundclick site. Just a thought.
Also, yep have seen a couple post more than one lyric. I guess they would have to choose which to delete?
Anyways, let's hope this all runs smoothly so it will become an annual thing.
Take care,
Amelia

Pete and Amelia,

I don't mind folks having signature links to their sites or whatever. We won't be checking out any audio files for this since there were plenty of opportunities to send in full songs. This is a lyric ONLY contest.

If folks break protocol, in some cases it may lead to improvements of this "test" or it might lead to people not voting for them. Either way, we're trying to keep it as open as we can so the best results will come out of it. There's no doubt that we won't be able to be perfect and I am hoping we'll learn some improvements during the process.

Thanks for the feedback!

Brian

Brian, this is so much fun. I'm having a great time reading lyrics from people I've never met at the lyric forums before, as well as seeing some familiar names from many years ago (Ozone Pete and Shandy). I'm like Ozone, I've already got a short list and I think the trick might be to try not to let too many days pass before reading the new entries so I don't have too many to read at one time which means I can really give each one my best attention. Already I'm starting to realise how judges must feel in lyric competitions and the one thing I've had reinforced in my mind is the importances of the impact of those first few lines of a lyric to get the reader interested right from the start. I think we've got a successful format going here Brian, thanks. Cheers, Judy

Judy,

Great points. Until we dove into our music awards program, I really had a skewed perspective of what other music awards and even label and publisher screeners go through. I am currently immersed in Female S/S music, by far the deepest genre of music we got this year. Even after 3 rounds of screening, we still have 200 Albums and about 1900 songs in the running for a nomination, and all of them are very well done. It really means that a song has to have "something" extra to stick out above it's strong competition. Sometimes they are intangible things, but often they just reach out to you and grab you. I especially like the songs that literally stop me from whatever I am doing and focus me in on them. That's a comment I hear from label people all the time. If they are on the phone, or writing correspondence, or even having a meeting and a song stops everyone in their tracks to listen, they know that it has that something special.

I don't screen a fraction as many lyrics as I do songs, which is one reason why I am letting the members do the screening/nominating and then turning it over to the final round judges to pick winners. So I am particularly interested to learn, as you and other have also indicated, if my picks here will be in tune with everyone elses. In the regular music awards, I get feedback throughout the process. But in this Lyric Award, I will be just one of the gang here and will learn the results along with everyone else.

Thanks for the note,

Brian

Good grief, Brian, There are so many new names here in the reading. I also, like Judy, have a short list of memorable lyrics and I have read all of them clear through to the end. It is easier to pick than I thought it would be, however I must say that I am impressed with all of the entries so far and I am looking forward to reading more tomorrow. I am sure it is a real brain buster for all of these good lyracists to choose thier best work. I was completely ferschimmled trying to decide what to enter. I had tried to post a brand new one and hit the new topic button. Of course, it did not work since only replies are posted, so I took that as a warning not to post my song about Beelzebub and dug deeper into my portfolio. Thanks for all of your blood, sweat and tears over all of these opportunities you make available to all of us Just PLain Folks. Idamarie

Mae,

As I said on the other post, you need to post a reply not create a new topic. You can ONLY reply to the existing post to add your lyric, just like you did right here on this post. Give it a try.

At the sake of sounding like I'm being
"politically incorrect" -- who are all these people jumping on the band wagon?

I quit counting after reading 35 entries that were posting for the first time.

Personally, I find the new writers appearing here to be refreshing. I've been a member since there were only 6,000 of us-- some of the last 14,000 'bandwagon jumpers' are our best writers.

You had a first post, no?

I think it's a great side effect to get some new writers on the message boards. Just as I encourage all the "lyric board regulars" to get out to chapter meetings and other parts of JPFolks, I try to get the non posting folks to come and get involved here. It's good for everyone.

Also keep in mind that I hadn't been very aggressive getting new folks to register and post on the message boards. Some were attracted to the new Instrument boards.. the Success Board.. the Venue board and just the new attention we've placed on the message boards in general. (And we have the register link posted on the home page, something we had never done before.)

I hope some of you folks will encourage and nurture the new folks posting lyrics. I've noticed on both Lyric 1 and Lyric 2 that there are posts slipping by with ZERO responses into page 2. We never used to let that happen, and I am kind of sad to see it. Even if you don't like the post, there is value to let people know you've at least read it. People can't improve in a vacuum and I'd think as a point of pride that some of the regulars who have vested so much in the lyric boards would want to keep the standards and activity here as top notch as the reputation of all of you has grown.

People regularly tell me how impressed they are with the active lyric board people here. How polite and professional the group and community as a whole is. As we are blessed with some new folks in our midst, let's keep the momentum going. Let them know they are welcome. If they don't know the polite and informal protocol, let them know nicely that they can get more replies to their posts by actively replying to others as well. New folks don't know that, but if we help them, they'll get involved and be productive like everyone else!

So, thanks to those willing to embrace the new diversity. And I hope everyone will get to know both old and new and keep improving everyone's writing together!

My only problem right now is that my "short list" is a long list and we're not done yet. (I haven't even started reading page 3)

Marty,

Yeah, I've only scanned them myself. I've been in audio mode for so long this year that I have to shift mental gears to go to reading mode. I am guessing we'll close in on 150 or even 200 by the end. It doesn't look like we'll be 500-1000 as some feared initially. Just be glad it isn't 100,000+. Trust me on that!

Hey, even tho we don't post alot, many of us are not jumping on the bandwagon as new members. I visit this forum and read alot of threads, but sometimes just don't have the courage to post replies. But...finally, I got a little nerve today. But it's hard to post lyrics that are so personal and to think people will be judging.

Jamie,

You are certainly not alone. The site gets around 30,000-40,000 hits per day. That's a lot of people looking and not a lot of them posting.

Glad you finally jumped in.

Brian,
As a newcomer, I'm not sure if I did the right thing. I entered the lyric contest on the 10th or 11th, but I don't see it among the other entries. Did you recieve an entry called "The Ballad of the S.S. Marie" by Ed Ryan? If not ,please tell me what I did wrong and I'll try again.
Thanks. This is pretty cool.

I'm one of those guys who appears to be new, because I haven't posted before on the boards, but in fact I've been a member of JPF for a couple of years now.

One thing I must be missing, though - Brian says <<I've noticed on both Lyric 1 and Lyric 2 that there are posts slipping by with ZERO responses into page 2. We never used to let that happen, and I am kind of sad to see it. Even if you don't like the post, there is value to let people know you've at least read it. >>
This seems to me to imply that some or most of these lyric contest postings ARE getting posted responses of some sort. How do I tell which ones were responded to, and where do I go to read the reply? I see how you can send email to the poster, but didn't know that people were publicly acknowledging what they read.

Brian's comment is about the regular lyric feedback area of the board - not the lyric awards thread. Posts in the lyric award thread should be lyrics only - no replies, we vote for the best in September.

The regular lyric 1 and lyric 2 feedback boards are for posting lyrics and getting comments, feedback, collaboration, etc.

Jan,
Actually, you've got it posted twice, but if you want to edit, go with the FIRST posting. (2nd will likely be deleted; but don't bother trying that yourself as only the board moderator [Brian] can do that.)
It's on page 3 (notice the little "pages" mumbered on Brian's original post, or just beside the "topic" title?), about 2/3rd's of the way down that page.
To edit, just click on the little "paper with the pencil" icon on the top line of your post. When that page comes up, sign in your username and password, and you'll see your original poat... edit away as you like, hit the "submit" button and viola!
BTW, you can repeat this process as many times as you want to get it just the way you'd like it to appear.
I think that would cover it. Anybody see sumpthin' I missed?

Hi Brian and fellow JPF Members, old and new, I planned to help a new member who had a double-entry into the contest, but, Pete has taken care of that nicely. I have just come from reading more entries. Bless my friend Judy for telling us that we need to read a few every day or we will not be able to judge the winners fairly. However, my list of FAVORITES DOTH GROW AND IT IS BECOMING MORE DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE FIVE. I will continue reading each day, marking my favorites down and which page they are on so that when the contest is over and our votes are asked for I will only have to read the ones I have chosen. Out of the 170 I have read so far, I have ear-marked twenty-two super lyrics in my opinion. If the contest has brought in this many new names to our family, I must say WELCOME, to some wonderful new competition and, hopefully, our networking grows more fruitful with each new artist. This may go over that 300 mark, Brian, for I have not seen a lot of my friends from the board yet in the readings. They are, maybe having the same trouble deciding on what to enter, that I did. After reading all of the lyrics posted so far, I have languished over my choice, thinking it not serious enough to have a chance. Then I find an especially cute lyric that I think would make an unforgetable lasting song and mark it as one of my favorites. You never know what someone is going to like. Viva Le Difference! I am starting to feel sorry for the mentors who will be making the final decisions. Good Luck to all. Idamarie

Hey Everyone,

As you might imagine, I am getting overwhelmed with sign ups and details for the upcoming Northeast Roadtrip. We have nearly 1000 artists signed up to perform at one of the shows and trying to keep them all straight and accomodate them all is a task that I need 10 people to do, but alas, I have to do it. With that said, if you guys can keep an eye out for me for any duplicate or multiple lyric postings, and can call my attention to them so I can quickly delete them, I would appreciate it. (Sort of like Ozones post above.) I try to check in several times a day to make sure things are going okay, but I can't carefully sort through the lyrics right now to see problems. Since many of you ARE checking, please let me know when you find things that need to be moderated.

Or perhaps Ozone would like to take on the job of moderating this for me? = )

Hey Brian, that's a great idea - how about it Ozone Pete??? I'm more than happy to keep an eye on things because I'm reading every single day. My short list, by not so strange coincidence, numbers 21 also, like Ida, at the moment (Ida.... I wonder how many we have in common, more than a few I bet). I'm loving every day I read the new entries. To date for me there are two lyrics that have stuck in my mind and are absolute stand-outs - but there's a long way to go yet. Judy

Why, shore. I could monitor the entries, as the important criteria are duplicate or multiple postings. (My comprehension is pretty decent in the reading dept.)

Brian, if you could e-mail me a discrete (or indiscrete [Linked Image] ) address to send "heads-ups" to, that would be fine.
I must tell you in advance that I will be out-of-state (and out-of-mind [Linked Image] ) from the 23rd to the 25th, so if somebody would clue me (in case I miss a trick or two) I'd appreciate it.

Hey! I've got 25 picks, but I've put the ol' "?" mark next to ten of 'em for later comparison. Yes, it will be interesting to see how may of them [if any] might show up for the nominees.
Also, I'm sure some will go with a "commercialistic" slant which should leave some of my picks behind. [Linked Image] All well and good; I think that's a valid standard fer shure!
I'm just going with my own personal taste, so I think some of my choices may turn out similarly odd! [Linked Image]
Have fun, and prepare for the bombardment on/nearing the final entry date! LOL

How is it I can post on this thread, as a registered user, and not be allowed to post my lyric on the contest board? Which says "not a registered user".

Never mind...You have to "reply to post" rather than submit "New topic. Ignore this.

Just curious about something. What are the thoughts of posting a lyric, then changing your mind and wanting to enter a different one instead?

I'm like some of the others who had a hard time deciding what to enter, and wonder if another choice would have been better?

Actually, I like the one I submitted but am still curious.

Greg,

The door is open on posting a lyric until the deadline. If you want to change the lyric you have entered, you can do that simply by editing your post. We will LOCK the entries after August 31st so that no additional changes can be made. At that time, all entries are final.

Pete,

You are now officially a moderator!

You can delete any multiple or duplicate posts. If someone has posted more than one lyric, send them a quick email to let them no in case they want to keep the second one rather than the first. If they don't respond, we will simply delete all posts after the first one, as it explains in the guidelines.

If you are unsure of what to with a post, feel free to email me and we'll discuss. Otherwise, feel free to nuke those pesky duplicates, multi posts or inappropriate/non lyric entry posts.

And if someone finds a problem, please let Pete know here or via email so he can delete!

Thanks Pete!

Ozone,

Be sure that you don't delete a whole post!!! You have to click on the little pencil/paper icon in the reply and then delete that. If you delete the entire post lost of folks will be unhappy! hahaha

If you want to withdraw your original submission and submit a different song, I'd suggest that you delete the original posting and enter a new one, rather than doing an edit on the original posting. Here's why:

To avoid being overwhelmed at the end, my personal system is to wait until each 'page' of about 30 entries is completed, then read all entries on that page, making notes of all songs that are candidates for top 5. When the contest is closed, I'll just go back and revisit those songs... so if a new song appears on a page I've already reviewed, I'll probably never see it.

Maybe other people are using this system, or something like it. I hope so.

Mike,

Actually, you'll still have to go back through all the postings if you plan to vote. I am not placing numbers with each song for voting until the system is locked off and it's all final. That is because people keep changing, editing etc.. their posts. So unless you go back through the posts, you won't know which numbers have been assigned to post. We are giving 20 days to vote, but if the submissions grow to over 300, we'll add more days, perhaps the entire month of September if needed.

You do have a valid point, but I hope folks are just taking notes and not making any final decision. We will likely have a flurry of posts near the deadline and things may change.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian

Thanks, for your encouraging comments, Brian, I, like others have been lurking for a while, trying to get up the nerve to jump into what seems to be a community who knows and cares for one another. I entered your lyric contest only after having my work critiqued. And, I hope to become a more 'active' member and learn everything I can from these Just Plain Folks with incredible knowledge and skills - perhaps, even contribute something of value myself. There is a saying in Africa, "Alog may stay in the water for 10 years but it will still never become a crocodile" I see this to mean, that unless we are willing to take a risk or contribute, we cannot even dream to change. OOPS! Sorry!!
Accidently posted my lyric submission twice ("Cats and Dogs 8/26, 3:15PM"). Don't know what happened. Please accept my apology and delete one of them. (I have tried and tried to delete with the "edit/delete" button and it tells me that only 'forum leaders' can delete entries.)

Better yet, please delete both entries and I'll re-submit. The posting did not respect my indentations and spacing, so I'd like to label verse, chorus, etc.
Either way, thanks for your indulgence; sorry for any hassle.

Another factor of those(including me) who do not post often, is that in my case, I just can't come here everyday, though I would really love to and interact with everyone. So therefore, you see me post every once in a while.

Thanks for deleting the superfluous contribution of "Cats and Dogs," O.Pete.

At your suggestion I have edited the one you let stand. For whatever reason, my attempts to edit yesterday were not accepted. Today, however, no problem.

I am just overwhelmed! My list is growing and growing and growing. But, I'm pleased to see some of the lyrics posted on the feedback forum now finding their way here - even tho' it's competition for mine. What a great opportunity for all of us to level the playing field - lyrics only. Thanks, Brian. Jeannette

I think it would be best practice to put the copyright symbol and author on the lyric when it is posted. That way we are sure it is protected (in a sense)by the person who wrote it.

Just my thoughts on it.
