If you send out non-copywrited lyrics to be looked at, what is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a reply? Should you check back even though nothing was said about checking back? Or just assume they are not interested? Would you suggest sending out to more than one party at a time, or take them one at a time? Thanks for any help. Jim jb@newedgetech.net

Who are "they"? I hope you're not submitting your lyrics to one of those bogus songwriting contests where everybody wins. As far as I know, there is no market for lyrics only. Publishers are only interested in complete songs - lyrics and music. If you are sending your lyrics to a legitimate company, they will be returned to you unread or thrown in the trash.

Thank you V E R Y M U C H. I have sent some to an artist that has his own recording studio, and is a singer-songwriter himself. I have also given some to a young lady who does melody, but not lyrics. I am hoping to find someone who is interested in puting melody to the lyrics as a joint venture, and see where it goes from there. Thanks again for responsing.

In the case of collaboration, I would say feel free to call. You're talking about a partnership, with both parties standing to earn as much. You need a good communication flow. Inevitably, there will be changes to made in the text (the singer has a hard time with specific words or rhymes, or simply gets inpsired to add a middle-eight, etc.). So get on the blower (politely) and see what's what. You can't have two people actually working on the same lyrics. That is a no-no. Make sure you know...and can trust who you send anything to, lyrics, songs, song ideas...whatever...I strongly suggest to you, to protect your rights to your words and music that you register them at the Copyright office...(Library of Congress)...just type in 'copyright' and you will be directed to their sight...download a form PA and fill it out...send in your works on a CD or cassette and $30.00...spend the money...if you believe in your songs or lyrics, it's worth the bucks...Make certain you get the correct forms for what you are submitting..
