Hi,
I want to know: how important is age when trying to become a successful songwriter/ singer/ musician? What is too young? What is too old? What musical "greats" and legends do you know of that got started after 27 years old? It seems like even the ones that broke through after 30 got started in their early twenties. I'd love to hear all your thoughts on this.

I know age shouldn't matter and certainly doesn't matter when it comes to creating good music, but when it comes to being successful (that is, making a living as a professional musician/ frontman for a band) it seems like age does matter, at least somewhat. I have looked and can't really find many examples of truly successful players that started after 30. I am hoping to be proven wrong. Can anybody find me any examples??

I guess it depends on what your definition of "success" is. If you want to be nationally known, or the next "American Idol", then age is a factor. If your definition of success means you play several gigs a week, have a small local following and support yourself financially, then that can happen at any age. ------------------ www.myspace.com/toddchappelle www.download.com/toddchappelle

Well, I started after age 30. Maybe I'm not internationally known, but I have my fans and my following, I get radio play, I love what I do, and I have 2 CDs coming out this year. To me, that's success.
Paul Frey & Barbara Livingston both made their operatice debuts in their 40s. A country singer was signed last year at the age of 41. Oprah says 50 is the new 30.
The only person looking for reasons not to succeed at 27 or 30 or 40 is the one lookin' back at you in the mirror. H

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
