Ok, here's the deal I recieved this inquiry about performing from Bluesprings Music out of nashville and a gentleman by the name of Ken Pearson. The website makes them look extremely professional.

http://bluespringsmusic.com/

However, I'm not sure of the offer. I have posted that below for opinions. Thanks!!

Hi Sabrina
I did speak with Ms Peaden, Sabrina You have a great Voice.. I'm not sure if you just write or if you are trying to be a preforming Artist. First let me explain about who we are are what we do. We work with the Major Labels and search for Talent. Every one knows the Labels don't except Unsolicited Material. Its because of the Thousands of people that send in materal every day, they go through people like us that have attorneys and a track record. Some times we find Artist that have everything the labels want, such as. A artist has to be receiving world wide Radio Airplay. They Ask How many Unites has the Artist sold and How large of a fan fair do they have and if they are preforming anywhere.
Some times we can find Artist that are touring and sellins a lot of CD's and are on Radio around the world, But most of the time this is not the way it is.
If a Artist we beleive has what it takes we contact them and if they do not have a track record that the labels request we can offer to help. We work with 1000's of radio stations around the world, and I'm not talking about Internet Radio. We put the Artist on Radio and see what the public thinks and if they make the charts we can offer them distribution in Europe. We also are connected to Festivals around the world and book our Artist to keep them in the publics Eye.
Yes we do charge a fee to set this up. We charge $3500 Thirty Five Hundred and the Artist furnishes 400 CD's, The First thing we do is put them on Radio around the world. As the Artist grow in the publics eye we set up tours in the UK Norway, Austraila Japan and other parts of the world. Once all of this is done and the Artist has grown we do take them to the Labels.
If you are interested let us know, But if Not again you have a great voice.
Regards
Ken Pearson

Well, just as a novice (I ain't been headhunted by anybody, including a record label), I see two problems with the missive you were sent:

(1) The missive itself is unprofessional. It has misspellings, incomplete sentences, and I would not dignify the grammar by calling it "grammar." The secretarial skills, in addition, are simply non-existent. From a professional perspective, anybody this entity represents is (my opinion) not going to get the time of day. Businesspeople (speaking as a professional manager person) expect to be approached professionally. People who can't do that are presumed not to have a product that is worthwhile selling.

(2) Your missiver is insisting on money up front, which I understand from folks on this board who are more knowlegeable than I is a Bad Thing and should be run away from. It's my understanding that anybody who seriously wants to promote your stuff has enough confidence in the quality thereof to take it "on spec," as it were, in exchange for a percentage or suchlike later, after he or she makes you a hit property.

I personally think if you have $3,500 and 400 spare CDs to invest in promotion, do it yourself rather than sending it to this guy. I think your money would be way better spent, even if you know nothing about music promotion.

And lots of luck.

If you read that email and actually considered still going forward, you need to really take a big step back and learn a lot more about every aspect of the music industry. There's nothing in that email that has any validity and the complete lack of professionalism by whoever wrote it should indicate that are completely incompetent and couldn't possibly help anyone but themselves make money off of people who simply don't know any better.

Wow.. I just noticed that site has Indie-Music's logo on it. I am having Suzanne Glass, the founder of Indie-Music over for dinner later this month. I will ask her what in the hell their logo is doing on their site. Ack. It makes it look like Suzanne is endorsing them, but somehow I doubt it.

how to recognize a shark:

#1 - they have "nashville" in their name

#2 - they say an "Artist" like you has potential but needs exposure

#3 - they ask you for money

Just think, you give them 400 CDs - which by the way, with just mastering and duplication would cost you about $800 or more, then you give them $3500... your investment is $4300... and theirs is? all they are doing is mailing your CD to some radio station somewhere - how will you ever know it was done? how will you know you got played? how will you know your CDs aren't sitting in the Nashville dump?

Personally, if I had 400 CDs, I'd be performing live & selling, have it on CD Baby & be marketing, using Indie Bible & other resources to get legitimate radio play, etc.

anyway, you did right to ask. I found JPF because I asked about some company that had approached me - and I was directed to a thread here. Thanks Brian for this awesome resource!

cheers

Gotta be honest the ONLY reason why I even posted it and asked was BECAUSE of all the different associations on the website.

Well I want to thank all of you wanna Be's. If you put all of you in a room, there would not be enough talent to sing in a pizza place.
People that are Artist are never discovered! there is a term Paying there Dues! No one bought me my first guitar or even the last one. Matter of fact no one has ever given me anything.
If you start a business who puts up the money to rent the building, Who pays for your material you are going to sell.
I dont think any of you would have the sence to go to a bank to borrow the money because you think some one is out there that will give you the money! Bull [naughty word removed]. I have been in this business for over 38 yrs. I work with Professional Artist that are in the Hall of Fame, Artist who are in Disney Movies. Yes They Paid to get there business going and no one put up the money for them. This is why there are only a few Stars in this world. Stupid people like your self are working at a hamburger place, thinking some one is going to come in and order the Big Meal, Because you know by that order he's got money, so you start to sing, knowing this person is going to sign you and make you a star. The Labels are Banks! You dont get a record deal. You get a loan that you will pay back with interest.
No, I'm not a English Major as one of you had a great time correcting my spelling. I'm not a ass Hole wanna be like that person.
Saying this. Yes there are rip-offs in Nashville, as well as LA, New York, and every small town across the country. Those that get ripped off are so damn stupid because they know nothinh about this business and never took time to Learn anything about it. They were to busy living in there dream world at the Burger Place.
One thing I was told yrs ago by a man in Nashville, in which his Dad ran the Opry for 45 yrs. "IF YOUR GOING TO MAKE IT IN THIS BUSINESS, NEVER LIE TO ANY ONE", This is why I have been around for a long time. I may tell you to Kiss My Ass But I will never Lie to you!

Hi Ken

You really are talented, after being a member for less than 24 hours your remarks:

"If you put all of you in a room, there would not be enough talent to sing in a pizza place."

is nothing less than fantastic. I'm impressed by how thoroughly you scrutinized the talent here. Any artist who sends you money must feel reasured by the time you you spend assessing and develop their talent.

Ken old buddy old pal. You, a purported legitimate professional, come into a world wide forum with over 40,000 members that include some very large people in the industry and you call names and disparage the talent? You must, if you have a professional operation, have a secretary of some sort to check your spelling and grammar, if not the syntax too. Then, of course, there are spell and grammer checkers in most word processors. With your apparent limited writing ability it would be wise to write what you are going to post to a forum in a word processor first, have it checked, and then copy and paste it to the forum reply/input box.

It's my opinion that you are a professional, a professional scam artist.

(By the way, since you've screamed SLANDER on another thread, the above remark is not slander but an OPINION. But you meant LIBEL, didn't you?)

I, like many others on JPF, personally make my living totally as a musican, and I belong to some very reputable music-industry-professional-filled organizations.

They have advised me that deals like the one above, offered by Bluesprings Music, are not legit.

Who should I listen to, someone who has my best interests at heart, or someone who screams insults at me across the airways? If I was thinking of using the services of Bluesprings Music, I certainly wouldn't now.

Hummin'bird.

Just wanted to counter one piece of what I perceived as misinformation:

If there are 40,000 of us, that is enough talent to play a pizza place. And pack the joint. Even if it was only us.

And Bluesprings Ken, I stand by my earlier remarks, wherever they are. My daughter still has a T-shirt I gave her when she was an infant, that says "Being Good Gets You Stuff." I think that applies to the music business as well as the childrearing one.

Funny how it it seems like everytime we call out one of these would-be sharks, they immediately resort to name calling. I see a pattern developing here! HMMMMM. p.s Kenny, If you want to see a talented, successful, artist, I suggest you visit www.bobcushing.com LOL.

Just want you to know (agreeing with Vikki) that there ARE legitimate promo companies out there, known for their integrity. I'm so sorry that this happened, but it was certainly eye-opening! I'm not personally familiar with ALL of the disc & artist promo companies, but if you do certain types of Christian genres (for example), I personally know that HMG Nashville (yes, even though it has "Nashville" in it's name), which is Higgins Music Group, IS reputable and does what they say!! Gene Higgins is the founder and president of the Christian/Inspirational Country Music Assocition, who just celebrated it's 11th Annual ICM Awards Show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Nov. 10th. (I know-- I was THERE!!) Just one GOOD one to check out. Email my own artist rep, Vivian Perry, at vivian@powersourcemusic.com if you do Christian country, southern gospel, inspirational country, or mainstream (secular) country. They're TOP in Christian country, and good at all of them!! Tell them Becky Wright sent you!

As I suspected a while back, Indie-Music does NOT endorse this company. As for the rest of his histrionics, if he had acted with ANY level of professionalism here, people wouldn't have had so many reasons to discount his company. Between nearly unreadable writing that often makes no sense to regularly insulting people he doesn't know from around the world (including the Grammy, Oscar, Emmy, Tony and GMA award winners and nominees among our membership) it's hard to take anything he says seriously. Even his threats are incorrectly worded. Anyone can spell a word wrong or use the wrong word on a message board. This company, however, sets a new standard for illiteracy among people claiming to be "professionals." If he's rude and insulting to everyone, including those he doesn't know and can't communicate above a grade school level, it's hard to be impressed by real credentials and friends he has.

Note to everyone involved on the General Message Board Post about this company:

I moved that post offline because much of it made no sense. I suggest the people involved communicate directly.

Not only can you not spell, nor write in a lucid manner, you can't understand, apparently, what you read. In none of Brian's posts did he call you a liar. You may have construed that but the fact remains there was no statement to the effect you were lying. What he said was "As I suspected a while back, Indie-Music does NOT endorse this company."
That is simply a statement of the results of his check with Indie-Music's founder.
The fact that your company may happen to be a member does not automatically provide an endorsement.

Had you done some research into some of the membership who belong to these forums you would have found quite a large number of award winning artists, writers, producers and so on. On top of that your blatant bashing of the collective talent here without checking could be construed as libel.
Maybe, just maybe, you should contact that music attorney to protect yourself and your company from a probably valid class action law suit.

Living in a glass house as you do should preclude you from casting stones. (so to speak)

Ken,

You need to go back and read the Agreement you had to approve BEFORE you were allowed to post on this site. In that agreement, you release our site, our host and the software company that creates this message board from any legal liability associated with posts on this site. Have your attorney take a look.

Besides that, TRUTH is ALWAYS a valid defense in legal cases. Nothing stated here is not the truth. I contacted Suzanne Glass, the founder and owner of Indie-Music and a long time personal friend of mine, about you and your company. She does not endorse you. That's a FACT. It doesn't matter that you are a member of her site. That doesn't mean she endorses your company or the stupid things you write and do.

It's also a fact that you've demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism here. Your writing is grade school level or worse. You don't spell well or construct a message without ridiculous word misusages. In fact, you sent me an email with this subject title:

"Bluesprings/Legel Action"

Are you aware that the word Legal is spelled with an A and not an E at the end? Are you also aware that SLANDER is spoken and LIBEL is written? You can't even get your threats straight, and that makes you look ridiculous. It's perfectly legal for someone to point that out.

You are your own worst enemy. The fact that people read your words and make an assessment as to your professionalism or lack thereof is perfectly legal and protected by free speech and common sense. If you don't want to be ridiculed, stop doing things that open you up to it. It's pretty simple.

The only person who has violated any laws on our site is you. You illegally posted private information about private individuals who were not voluntarily involved in the public discussion. I have retained a copy of your posts and actions. I will be happy to turn them over if anyone seeks legal recourse against you as is outlined in the user agreement YOU agreed to. Remember?

Now go away and stop insulting people you don't know, making hollow threats and making a fool out of yourself and if you're lucky, people will forget you exist.

Brian

By this, I hope to God he does not mean that Bluesprings run listings with TAXI. It would be enough to make me seriously reconsider my membership with them. I'm not joking either.

I, also, had the same concern. I sent Taxi an e-mail today stating just that, along with a link to this thread. I have yet to get a response.

BRAIN YOU STATED YOU WOULD NOT REMOVE ALL OF THIS BULL [naughty word removed] FROM ALL OF THE STUPID DICK HEADS ON THIS SITE, BUT YOU REMOVED A TOPIC I HAD ASS HOLE!

THIS WAS A EMAIL I RECEIVED TODAY FROM A REAL ARTIST UNLIKE THE DICK HEAD WANNA BE'S ON THE SITE

Ken…

I saw the thread you posted on jpf. I normally don’t have time to cruise forums because I’m working at getting my songs out there, not sitting around my computer bashing other people’s attempts to open a dialogue.

I’ve pretty much stopped trying to share and openly discuss anything on that forum because of the stupidity displayed by some of the “regular members”.

You’re not going to find any talent there that could be marketable anyway. Some of them have decent writing ability, but no people skills and some have the other skills but nothing going on musically. It’s pretty much a waste of time… a bunch of dreamers thinking their paltry attempts at networking with other amateurs will somehow give them a big break. Ain’t gonna happen.

I thought you’re words were well said.

I did go to your site and checked out some of the talent your company is representing.

As a songwriter and weekend warrior with various bands, I’d be curious as to what sort of material you’re looking for and for what target group or artist? I’ve been around the block a few times and understand the business. I’ve had some independent success with cd sales in Europe, Australia, and Russia so I know my songs have some market appeal, they just haven’t gotten the ear of the right artist to carry them to the next level.

Let me know what you’re looking for or the parameters you require to be heard.

Sincerely

DAMN IT WOULD SEEM SOMEONE ELSE AND LOTS OF OTHERS HAVE BEEN HERE AND FOUND NO TALENT AND A LOT OF DICK HEADS! THIS PERSON THAT SENT THIS IS A MUSICIAN UNLIKE THE DICK HEADS HERE! YOUR FORUM IS A ****ING JOKE!
AS FAR AS TAXI, YES TODD WASHBURN USED TO WORK FOR THEM AND DESIGNED SOME OF THERE WEBSITE, TODD IS A PARTNER OF MINE. AS FAR AS INDIE MUSIC WE DID A LINK WITH EACH OTHER. LETS HAVE FUN!

It looks like Ken is unraveling. Often when people are exposed for what they really are, they do that type of thing. Now he's resorted to posting rants with expletives in them. I moved the post, but we have it on record as proof of his continued meltdown and emotionally unstable personality.

Anyone considering using him or his company, who has found this post via an internet search should be very careful. Don't simply take word of any one source, but check with many. I do think the most important information on this particular post comes from Ken himself. His lack of communication skills and professionalism alone should be more than enough reason to keep your $3500 dollars and spend it with someone who has some credibility and people skills. His credentials mean nothing if he's this unstable in dealing with people in the industry. He's so self unaware that he keeps escalating the rhetoric and name calling and has no idea how badly that makes him look.

So proceed with great caution, but you're probably better off moving on to any number of legit companies out there who can actually represent you professionally and reasonably.

Ken,

That listing of links on a website page is NOT an endorsement. It doesn't indicate that you do any direct business with TAXI. It also doesn't even mean you are a paid member of TAXI. It's simply a list of links which means very little and certainly shouldn't be used to suggest that TAXI supports or works with you professionally. It's certainly NOT an endorsement of you and your company. To imply that it is more than a simple links page listing is wrong.

And it's nice to see that your PR skills are just as bad as ever. Are you aware that the more you rant and rave and post your own name and company name on this post, the more likely Google will pick it up when someone searches for you and your company and then this is the representation of your company and your personal words and actions all of them will see? Because that is exactly what is going to happen. But you just keep digging your hole deeper and deeper.

Because Ken has started posting gratuitously offensive messages like a 12 year old, I will have to block him from posting further. I will let folks who find it on google make their own decisions.

Always be careful out there. There are a lot of scam artists and there are a lot of people who aren't professional asking for your money. Always check with multiple independent sources before you spend money. You can't buy your musical success dream. No one can. If someone tells you they can make you a star for a fee it's usually best to move on.

Brian

I suggest anyone who is looking for management or representation in the music industry read the article by Bobby Borg over on the Taxi site.

I quote:

"A manager must be able to nurture and maintain numerous relationships, while at the same time standing firm, being sensible, and demonstrating a strong knowledge of the business. (It's a fine balance between ticking people off and not being a push-over.) If a manager walks into the record label and starts pounding desks, insisting that things get done his way, HE'S BOUND TO GET ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE!"

&

"A manager must be secure, grounded, firm, confident, educated, and well-respected—far above all the bells and whistles and shallow surface stuff. Without these positive and respectful attributes, you're only building a relationship in a personal manager that is doomed to eventually fail!"

Vikki:

Those are good points. I think artist management (or writer management) is not a lot different from other kinds of management--it requires much the same skillset. If you can do labor negotiations with the Teamsters Union, and get away with not only your shirt intact, but pieces of the other guy's shirt, too, you probably have the ability to go head-to-head with The Labels and get something out of it for me.

And--having done the Teamsters thing myself--I have thought about whether that kind of thing might be a niche for me in The Music Biz (even though all I really want to do is write stuff). However, there's an additional consideration that enters into the picture, and that's familiarity with the territory. I regularly tell my collective bosses on the City Council that what's important is not *what* I know, but *whom* I know; that's how come I can Do Stuff that (presumably) justifies my (presumably) high salary.

So when I'm evaluating potential managers, or representers, or whatever they call themselves, I'm asking not only how good t6heir people skills are, but whom they know, and whom they do business with. (And no, Mr. Nashville here doesn't rate very high as far as I'm concerned.) I'm obviously not ready yet to do anything like that, but I'm keeping my eyes and ears open so I'll know where to jump when the time comes.

It's a very common tactic for scam artists to try and find ways to associate their names with well known and trusted companies, individuals and organizations. That's why you should always make the effort to follow up on references and never take someone's word for it.

Isn't it interesting that someone here tried to imply an endorsement from 2 well known companies, but with a simply call and email it was proven the connection was invalid and neither endorsed that persons company in any way. Hopefully people will see this and a lightbulb will go off in their head and they'll do more research before they pay a scam artist money. The internet is going to make it harder and harder for scam artists to operate. There's too much open communication. In the past these guys would have some hand picked cronies who would vouch for them, or they'd count on people not following up or simply not being able to. Now, it only takes a quick Google search to uncover lots of info about these people.

We can only hope.

Brian, I was introduced to Just Plain Folks when I posted on an "offer" I received (you are so talented, we want to review your music, send a press kit & a cheque yadda yadda)... and I was referred to a thread on JPF which identified the shark. So your efforts are paying off, and we are all becoming more educated. The ones I feel 'motherly' for are the young innocent beginners who jump in with both feet thinking someone is going to help them become a star - and get their hearts broken. Thank goodness we have places like JPF.

cheers

Actually the more common victims of scams are older. Kids and teens don't have money (though often their parents do and they get scammed, but it's the adults writing the checks). But most of the nasty scam artists we've come across also focus on older people with disposable income and an unfulfilled dream of fame or success in music. These guys pump these people up, tell them what they desperately want to hear and then explain that for a fee, they can help make the dream come true. Some scams are more elaborate than others. Sometimes it's just selling them overpriced studio time and production, sometimes overpriced promotional services, sometimes promises of "industry showcases" where often the only people who show up are other wannabes and cronies of the scam artists in on the deal. Now the internet allows these same old school scam artists to massively connect to more potential victims than ever. And sadly, when someone is telling an artist what they desperately want to hear (and often that no one legit ever tells them) they can't wait to write the check. I've heard horror stories of scam artists getting $30,000 dollars for a 1 song demo from a 72 year old woman who wrote some country lyrics which they recorded, over existing tracks and tried to cram in her words to a recycled melody, often totally out of rhythm and meter, with a vocalist that was about the same age and has been scamming people in Florida for decades and decades. He even used the same cheesy "cover" photo for the CD single that was taken of him circa 1950. Sadly enough, I got nearly a half dozen of those CD's submitted over 2 Awards cycles, all with the same vocalist, all with the same exact music track with different words being warbled over the top of the music tracks. They had the same album photo and only the name of the "writer" who was victimized was different on the packaging.

So anyone can be scammed. I know a heart surgeon who got taken for over 20,000 dollars before he realized what was going on, so it's not a matter of intelligence. Very smart people have fallen victim to the scam artists out there. People get so infatuated with the idea that someone is going to help their dream come true, they lose all connection with reality. If someone tried to pull the same type of scam on them in their normal field of work/expertise, they'd see right through it. But when it's someone fawning over their music, they drop logic and common sense and they send big checks to people who can't even write a coherant sentence let alone help their career. And these scam artists are very good at pumping them up, explaining away obvious problems and warning flags that come up, and dropping famous names to intimidate these artists (or threatening them with statements like their complaints will "end the career of their daughter if they complain.") That's classic old school scam artist.

We can only hope they all rot in hell when they thankfully do the world a favor and finally die off.

So, who knows if any of these things apply to anyone we know who's been posting here. But if the facts or patterns fit, be careful out there.

Brian

The biggest thing I've benefitted from since becoming a JPF member, is the collective ability to expose sharks, and frauds. {It's also REALLY fun to shame and ridicule them!}{They have it coming!} I wish I had known about JPF a few years ago, before I made an unwise buisness decision that cost me about $3,ooo! And Brian is correct, Im neither stupid, nor inexperienced, but I made a mistake that I wouldn't have made if I had you all around for feedback. jpf 4-ever, fraudulent sharks never! P.S Bye bye Kenny!

Well, I've stayed away from this thread for obvious reasons. However, I now feel the need to make one last post in regards to this. I recieved an email that was utterly inappropriate in responce to this. I have emailed those involved back with the same reply that I am posting below. The email states the purpose of posting here in this thread.

Mr Pearson,

As I am making the assumption you are well aware that it was my initial post that has brought the whole events of the last few weeks to the melting point. I recieved email, and posted on a website of people that I utilize to gather information. I in return made my own deductions that your business offer was not something that I was prepared to pursue at that time. I have not made any more communications with you, nor have I made any more comments on the web, other than those first few in the initial week of the thread.

So, you must understand my surprise to recieve this email this morning in my inbox, going on about things that are nothing of my concern. How you decide to conduct your business is neither her nor there for me. And however you intend on conducting yourself on the internet or off either neither of my concern either. However, I am extremely offended to find this communication thrust into my home email.

I will only ask this once. To all those concerend..Please disconntinue sending me any further communications on this matter that are not initiated by myself. To continue to do so will be in direct violation of the law.

Respectfully
Sabrina Doughty (Lund)

PS. This communication WILL be posted for reference in my thread at JPFOLKS....if Brian see's fit to remove it that is his perogative. There will be nothing derogatory posted, by myself, however with the ever changing world of alternating email address I feel it most pertinent to make this communication readily accessible to all those listed and referenced.
