Hey gang, I am new to the technology side of things when it comes to posting my music on websites. I have my music on a homemade CD, how do I "rip" it from the CD into MP3 format, to post on a website like this?

I think most here upload their songs to a Web Site and link to them from here. If you don't know how to do it you can find someone to do a Web Site for you. My publisher and I had a local person do a Web Site for us. You can listen to ths songs at www.fiverosesmusic.com. Ask at a Computer Repair Service for someone that can do a Web Site. Good Luck.

Dallas: There are two ways I know of to do the conversion from *.wav files (what's probably on your CD) to *.mp3s (which take up less room and are what you'll want to post). (1) When I first started doing this, I got software (free--I am waydam cheap) to do it. The one I got was MusicMatch Jukebox, which was available on SoundClick, which at the time was marketing it as an *.mp3 player (they've since developed one of their own, which is not near as good). (2) I later invested in a little recorder--a Tascam 4-channel "Porta-Studio"--which can do the conversion to *.mp3 all by itself. These days, I just do that, and squirt the file from the Tascam to the 'puter (which treats the Tascam as a portable hard drive). If you have computer recording software (which I do not) *it* will probably convert sound files to *.mp3, too. As far as where to post, there are a bunch of places. I use SoundClick, which is probably still the biggest; it has some technical problems, most related, I think, to there being so much traffic and SoundClick still using an antique operating system, but they're also one of the few sites (I think) still catering to folks like me who don't have high-speed Internet (I still have the curse of the Dialup Demons). Soundclick also had (and may still have) good instructions how to do it--even I could follow them, and I'm a technological dinosaur. And there are plenty of users there with a lot of technical expertise who are willing to help. (This is probably true of the other sites, too.) Click on the link below my signature and it'll take you to my little "corner" of SoundClick and you can see--and hear--what it's like. You can do that with anybody who's got one of these URLlies attached to their name--and you'll notice there's a bunch of different ones. This help? Joe www.soundclick.com/bands/7/joewrabek_music.htm

iTunes from Apple is free. It can easily take (unprotected) sound files and change them to MP3. It is available for both programs. You can also use it to burn CDs. ------------------ Favorite Websites: http://www.jpfolks.comhttp://www.composeforums.comhttp://www.schoolofourlady.orghttp://home.earthlink.net/~singingforgod

Yes, there are free programs out there on the Web which will do what you want to do. What kind of operating system does your computer use - windows (95, 98, or XP) or mac (OS8, OS9, OSX)? ------------------ Later, Pat

I use a free program called CDex that will convert both ways: wav->mp3, and mp3->wav. Works like a charm.

Most CD ripping programs are very easy to use. You just chose the source, destination and format you want to convert your music into (.WAV, .OGG, .MP3). These ones are all free for the PC! Free CD Ripper 3.1 from Focussoft.net is good, but if you’re running XP Audiograbber from www.audiograbber.com-us.net may be a better choice. It's more complicated to use but has all the features you could ever need. It also has a good "help" section. Free CD Audio Ripper from koyotstar.free.fr/indexEn.html is a good basic converter and really easy to use but it's built in audio player has problems. Sites like SoundClick are really easy to post your .MP3s on. If you have any web space (sometimes you get it free with your internet service provider) you could also upload your songs into that. Then anyone you provided with the correct link could download your songs. If you use a thing called FTP (file transfer protocol) you can simply drag and drop your files into your webspace. Just contact me if you want further info on how to do this. Good luck with your music Charlie
