I have several songs from country to rock that I

have "home demoed" on a computer recording

system and am looking for artists to record and

buy the rights to record these songs, I can send

mp3's or cd's and lyric sheets on request

Recording artists generally do not "buy" the rights to record a song. They do not need to. They need only pay you royalties when they actually manufacture and sell the CDs.

Yep. Get yaself into a PRO and then get out there pitching.
If ya really god, and really famous ya may get a sweetener for the right to do the first recording.
Do remember with an uncut song, the owner can say yes or no to who records it. That is where the sweetener if any comes in.
I think they are becoming rare these days though. Or low on sugar content.
Best of luck.

No. The label does not pay, either. As an unknown writer, the likelihood is that you will receive absolutely nothing when an artist cuts your song. The artists and rcord companies do not pay for this priviledge because they do not have to.

Once it starts selling, or getting radio play, you will get royalties. If it sells very little and gets very little airplay, you will earn next to nothing. If it does not sell at all, and never gets on the radio, you will earn nothing. You don't get paid for "cuts." You get paid for sales and for performances of the recording.

Okay.

Who are some of the artists that have cut your songs? And if it is not too personal (I'm sure this would be very valuable information to the membership here) how much did they pay you to "buy the rights" to record your songs?

For allegedly having 30+ years of experience, you sound (and write) like a rank tyro to me.

For one thing, you'd know that putting a post on this board isn't going to attract any publishing interest in your material.

Try joining Taxi... I heard your old writing buddy, Randy Bachman, is a current member and trying to get his songs forwarded too.

I'm sure the reunion will be heartfelt.

I think what beatles2rock was talking about are advances and royalty options for writers. It still does exist (although fading fast).
I still see these types of deals in the latin music industry, but only with proven writers, and the advances are a LOT smaller now days.

still depends on who wants them I am a "proven" writer but that reallydoesn't matter as long as you are copyrighted and a memeber of like BMI etc..... they pay if they want your song there are several options I have delt with most and you can make a little or a lot again depends on the label and the artist and I did not mean to come off as a jerk but Roberk does not know it all and really doesn't know me and I just didn't care for being called names I would never say anything about anyone I didn't know but each to their own I guess

You co-wrote songs for the Guess Who and BTO? Would you mind naming some of them? I was a huge fan of both bands and followed their careers, especially BTO. I don't recall too many outside songwriting collaborations. If you can correct me, I'd be very impressed.

I did a little Internet sleuthing, which I am quite good at. None of the information below is private, since I found it readily by following trails online.

The gentleman in question is Allan Hurd. He and his wife Diane are from Poole, Dorset, UK. They used Diane's first initial, the 'N' from the word "and", and Allan's first initial to form the name of their singing duo -- DNA. Their band goes by The DNA4ever Band. They play mostly cover songs, with some originals in the mix.

A search against "Allan Hurd" did not return many results, and none that linked him as a co-writer with anyone, much less Guess Who or BTO.

It must be a secret.

Hey Guys,

Very entertaining, but you never know who your really talking to on here. Some people (big names) think it is funny to mess with unknowns. Not Saying that Beatles is messing with anyone. I just know for a fact some do. Then again I know there are alot more who are trying to give great advice. Some you will never know who they are. CaNt We AlL jUsT GeT aLoNg. My Best friend signed up with his nephew's name. But He gives great advice. And does so because he knows what he is talking about. but because of who he is he can't go to places like this. Okay I'm Ramblin' .
Keep Writing

Allan,

Well, here's my Internet sleuthing trail. If this is not you, there is an AMAZING, uncanny phenomenon going on here...

You've removed your personal email since my post, so I won't refer to that. But, the website you listed as yours (available to anyone by clicking on the icon in the bar above your posts for artist info) is http://www.nctc.net./~rubbersoul/1/index.htm.

I went to that site. It has an image for "Beatles 2 Rock" on the opening page. This is your chosen member name here: beatles2rock. So, that's you. The site offers Beatles albums for sale.

There is also a site called www.beatles2rock.com. This site is EXACTLY the same as the one you post as your own above, down to every jot. It also bears your chosen member name. Only the URLs are different.

The page after visitors enter (of either website above) says "Copyright 2004 BMI DNA beatles2rock 1994-2004" at the bottom.

Note the "DNA". What do you propose that means, Allan?

Now visit this URL: http://www.hotbands.com/artistpage.php?id=7757

Up comes a picture of two middle-aged folks and the following text:

Quote
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">dna4ever--dynamic songwriting duo creating some great tunes! We perform, write, record country/pop/rock and are excited to have you hear our newest cd; please check out some of our mp3's and contact us for any contract music. Support our troops, they rock! Mp3's available at http://www.dna4ever.net, http://www.beatles2rock.com Also contact us to send your HERO an encouraging card and cd to support them while deployed overseas. We send care packages all the time! Contact: dna4ever@nctc.net or dna4ever@charter.net THANKS FOR VISITING DNA4EVER!!!</font>

Note the genres listed -- "country/pop/rock" as cross referenced against those posted in the first post of this thread as "for sale":

Quote
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> ...from country to rock ...</font>

Note also that one of the email addresses listed is on the server "nctc.net" -- the same (obscure) server hosting the website listed here on JPF in your contact information.

This information also mentions someone offering to talk if people want to "contract music" (i.e., "songs for sale") which is the topic of this particular post. Obviously, it also mentions two websites: www.beatles2rock.com and www.dna4ever.net. The first of these is the identical site to the one you post as yours here on JPF. The second is a link to the band DNA4ever. (Recall the DNA at the bottom of your own site).

One hops to www.dna4ever.net. The heading in in the blue bar at the top of the site starts: "Diane and Allan".

Your name is also "Allan" -- a more unusual spelling, to say the least. (Anyone finding this freakish yet?)

At that site, one clicks the SOUNDCLICK: Visit our Page! link and hops over to the SoundClick profile for these folks (Diane and Allan).

From there, Diane and Allan's names and the band name -- DNA4ever (as well as that being their SoundClick ID) -- are confirmed. Their location listed HERE is Grand Island, NE. (This I didn't notice before, but it is listed for artist info along the righthand column on SoundClick.)

Hmmm ... you are also listed (below your username here on JPF) as living in NE (though it says Dannebrog, NE). Curious.

By Googling the name "Allan Hurd" and "Diane", I also came up with THIS site: http://www.ourband.net/new_asp/band_profiles2.asp?ID=118. This is a UK site. It posts the EXACT picture from the HotBands site above with the name DNA and band name DNA4ever -- only here, their location is listed as "Poole in Dorset", UK. Same band description as the SoundClick site, but different location.

Now, call me crazy, but ... I don't think my sleuthing is too shabby.

It is POSSIBLE that, on a technicality, Diane is not your wife, but another relative (sister, sister-in-law, etc.). I did assume by the listings as "Diane & Allan Hurd" that you were married. It is also possible that there is a situation where there is a line of "Allan Hurd"s as Jr.'s. and Sr.'s, making "Diane" your mom. But there does NOT seem to be a possibility that the connection here is purely coincidental.

As to the rest -- again I say, if all of this ISN'T you, then there is someone else living a parallel life RIGHT THERE NEXT DOOR in NE (or UK, who knows).

Baz / Erik

Why would a songwriter buy songs from another songwriter in a songwriters forum??

That's Weird.....

Allan,

I hardly "dug up" anything. There is no "speculation" involved, or room for error. I posted the entire chain of information that led to my conclusion, starting with what YOU have as your website and contact info on THIS SITE, which anyone can objectively follow and verify for themselves. That doesn't take digging. I merely wanted to be able to see if you had written for the bands you said.

And your post alludes (by use of asking me to "leave you alone") that I am somehow harrassing you. This is a public forum. And all information is, once again, posted publicly on the Internet. If you don't want people looking it up, don't post it on the Internet.

We've learned to be skeptical when a situation seems to warrant it.

Well, if this were happening in a courtroom, the only thing left for Baz to say is:

I really did want to be impressed with the fact that you co-wrote songs with the Bachman-Turner guys and with Burton Cummings and company.

The fact that you haven't named any of the songs that you supposedly co-authored, or even mentioned your name so the few collaborations I'm aware of could be verified, doesn't say much for your credibility.

If I had written a song with Randy Bachman, Fred Turner or Burton Cummings, I'd sure as heck brag about it.

Well?

The answers to my "sleuthing trail" really haven't said much. "I'm not married to a Diane." "I've never been to the UK." Well, there are other options, as I've mentioned, which have not been refuted. And, I fully believe this person posted on a UK site that he WAS in the UK, to get notoriety on a site, even though he didn't live there.

You have skirted direct answers. So, Allan ... a few simple, direct questions:

Is your last name "Hurd" or not?

What does "DNA" mean at the bottom of the website you list here on JPF as yours?

Are you part of (or familiar with) a band now or ever called DNA or DNA4ever (regardless of punctuation in the band name)?

Strangely enough, on top of everything I posted above, there IS an "Allan Hurd" listed in the white pages as living in Dannebrog, NE.

You are EITHER saying:

A. There just happens to be an "Allan Hurd" living in your town, involved in the same music genres, trying to sell that music, listing the same website you list as his own, involved with a band named DNA.

-or-

B. You ARE "Allan Hurd" but all the information online is posted by a poser and not actually you.

-or-

C. You are the Allan Hurd found through the Internet trail mentioned above, who HAS been involved with a group called DNA, DOES know a "Diane" who you are involved in music with, etc.

Which is it?

Mr.Hurd to deny who you are, means that you also deny that you wrote or co-wrote any songs.

I seem to recall, not too long ago, another thread where someone said, "That's not really me! You have the wrong guy! Your information is wrong!"

Recall?

All I can say is, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks -- guess what...

So call the guy up and have a nice chat. If the two of you solve any of the world's big problems, let us know.

Eh, I just have a strange concept of "fun" sometimes. My "Sleuthing" skills actually have come in handy for me for "biz" stuff, too, since I am pretty skilled at finding contact information for people that is not readily available.

In this case, it was really just to validate a claim, and turned into an interesting trail -- especially against the claims of "not me". That rouses my curiosity. I'm usually not someone who can just shrug off a mystery, but like to get to the bottom of it if possible.

In this case, I may not succeed. But, it was another honing of my search skills, which do benefit me in "real stuff"!

I'm all done now. Really.

Hey,

I have an idea! Let's move on. This forum is about songwriting. There has been a topic proposed. Many of you have answered, correctly, I'll add. Buying songs/selling songs is not a good idea. Someone else caught onto the advances thing. What we have here is a failure to communicate. Enough the the personal digs. I think we should just all move on. I'm about to post the weekly topic, so I propose we move on to that. [Linked Image]
