**** ARTIST PROFILE ****
In this old hippie’s mind, good Country, really good Country, was born in the 70s when some of the biggest names in Nashville fought their way into new contracts, gaining the freedom to produce their own records and record the songs they wanted to sing. Willie and Waylon were at the forefront of this of course. Kris Kristofferson. Johnny Cash…. Tapping the great Texas troubadours for songs, road dog poets like Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver. Ditching theater gigs for dance halls. Spiking traditional arrangements with rock, funk and psychedelia. Gettin’ busted by the man.
I realize this is a long prelude to an artist profile, but the context is important because I believe that, more than anyone making music in their prime today, Margo Price is the modern torchbearer for that 1970s scene. She was clearly inspired by the sound – and is a friend and collaborator to everyone in it – but even more crucially, she burns with the wild, defiant spirit of a natural-born outlaw. Fearless, political, untamed and brutally honest. Speaking truth to power. Smoke from a joint curling up around the brim of her hat. Leaping from honky-tonk to psychedelic rock, from aching ballads to fiery anthems, from vocals to guitar to drums. She’s a fireball of a live performer and a top-notch songwriter. And her voice draws comparisons to all the greats – Loretta, Tammy, Bobbie Gentry, etc.
My personal favorite Margo Price moment was seeing her at the Burl County Fair lined up with her daughter to go down the big carnival slide. Just a mother doing right by her child, not too big to mix it up with the crowd. Real, as she always keeps it.
After two albums – produced by Sturgill Simpson and Jonathan Wilson in turn – that ventured far from the traditional country shore, Margo has announced a new record, to be released in August, that will bring her sound full circle. I love this bit from the press release: Hard Headed Woman is country music as only Price can make it: free of rules, cherishing tradition, hard headed to the core but with a delicate, beating heart.
