Yep, I can hear that in a movie. Maybe dial back the percussion a little so that it sits in the background of the scene a little more? I don't really know about sync, so I could be totally wrong about that. Maybe someone who knows more about it could chime in.

I always think of "Sync" as being given a scene, a mood, and a specific time to make the music "emphasize" the story-line. I would LUV to get into THAT! smile

This would go well with "Heavy Metal" movie of years back....or maybe a car driving through the desert trailing a plume of rising dust.

I think www.iMDB.com is the site that can identify Music Supervisors, a.k.a. Broadcast Producers of Television Series.
That's the person whose job is finding music to accompany the 'content' on the series.
There are hundreds of channels with thousands of shows, most of which are constantly looking for music.
Contacting them may get you sent a 'Brief', specifics on what they're looking for at any given time.
Having 'broadcast ready' recordings, which you own the Copyright and the Master Recording of, which you can zap out to them on demand, no delay, can open a door which then may remain open for your future.
They may listen to product you've created, at random, and find things they want to 'use', or may listen to what you create to their specifications.
They're always in a hurry, deadlines to meet, broadcast dates. It can be long-term relationship if engaging in commerce with you is smooth, efficient, no surprises.
'Broadcast ready' is a reference to the recording qualities, probably levels suited to match up with visual content. Standards for that 'use' are different (lower quality) than for radio or streaming, although potential for play there also exists.
A Synchronization License is usually for a specific 'use', for a specific period of time, after which any restrictions they ask you to abide by, not Licensing the product to a competitor for example, terminate and you can re-License the product. You continue to 'own' it. They only License 'use'.
One I heard of ( www.catchthemoonmusic.com ) Licensed for a commercial ad on TV for six months. At the end of six months they decided they wanted it for another six months, and paid more than they had originally, which was a nice chunk of change. At the end of that six months they Licensed for another year, more than doubling what they paid for the previous year.
One 'License' becomes a 'credential' for marketing your product to others. It can be very lucrative.

Simply listen to the music 'used' in TV commercials and shows, movie soundtracks, those six second internet ads, 15 second ads, 30 second ads, to get an idea of what might sell. Create, get it recorded, Registered for Copyright, make sure you 'own' the Master Recording if you have anyone else involved in Recording it, and be prepared to Supply their Demand if they invite you to submit something.
This is business, commerce, not a hobby, an avocation, but a vocation, not just you, but a company, engaging in Contractual commerce with other companies.
Keep good records, formal files you can reference for future 'uses' of each product.
Titles become important, enabling you to readily identify the product they're talking about and respond quickly.
I had a request to 'Play that Song about that woman.' I had to think about what Song that was, deducing from who made the request and when and where he'd heard it before which Song he was referring to. Professionals in Sync Licensing are not likely to be that vague. They know what Song they're talking about and should be able to specify it by title, and you should be able to find your records and recordings and quickly respond to a Brief requesting it.
Being able to sign a Contract, 'all in', 'clearing' it for 'use', meaning you own the Copyright and own the Master Recording, moves it along toward payday.
Another story from the biz is the band whose 'sponsor' got a Music Supervisor interested in a Recording, who played it for his Boss who wanted it, but...wanted them to take out a horn section. The Sponsor, whose reputation was on the line then, told the band. The band objected to the 'cost' they assumed would entail from going back to the Producer and requesting that the horns track be removed. They ultimately refused.
The sponsor's reputation was stained. The band's reputation was stained. The Music Supervisor had to go back to his Boss and tell them the problem. Bosses don't like problems.
Cost of recording with a Producer, studios, musicians, can be prohibitive. But a Producer might be willing to get paid on the 'back end', after the product gets to market, a check is cut, and the cost is easily covered. Don't let a project stall for any reason, once the product has 'sold' to the Decision-Maker who already took it to his Boss, THE Decision-Maker, who wants your product. The customer is always right. Give 'em what they want. Sell 'em what they want to buy. Your bank will thank you.
Those Sync fees can pay a lot of bills. Cathy Heller's book, "Don't Keep Your Day Job" might be interesting reading for the hobbyist wanting to transition to company, vocation versus avocation.

I headed up a post production company in Vancouver for about fifteen years and I agree with Gary 100%. It's a huge business and if you want to be in that business you gotta be serious and ready to deliver instantly. Movies/TV series are a long shot because you are always up against the music supervisor's favorite composer who writes the music for the entire show(s). I rented space in our company to a composer and he did nothing but write for shows 24/7. Commercials IMO are a better bet because there are millions of them and they only need a chunk of what you've produced...but you have to be a pro

Steve

If you write a song, it is already copyright protected. What is required of you is that you can prove you wrote it first. Of course you can get official copyright protection but that could occur if there is serious interest in a tune. In Canada all of my songs are registered with SOCAN and ASCAP in the US. Although not officially protected, they at least give a time frame when it was written.. Mailing it via registered mail, to yourself, is generally not accepted by the courts.

I believe that you can upload collections for the same price as one song as long as it's done at the same time. I don't know if there is a limit on the number of songs that can be in a collection or not.

If Synchronization Licensing is your intent, some evaluation of tracks seems logical, to assess potential for that 'use'. Almost anything has potential, but some more than others. Your task would be to select a manageable number of the ones you think your 'Company' might want to pitch, without knowing an intended 'use', commercial ad, TV show, internet ad, soundtrack. Listening to all 500 to re-familiarize yourself with what you have, perhaps making some 'category' notes you can reference if someone gives you specifications, reference Songs they'd like to have something similar to, so you can quickly find them and respond might be a place to start. Can your 'Company' manage all 500 or can you select a smaller number to work with? Your Company; your decision.
Your copyright questions can be answered at www.copyright.gov (USA; other Government entities in other countries.)
Once upon a time a single fee could cover a single Song or a Collection. Times change with who wield Government authority to make such decisions so going to copyright.gov is part of your Company's 'due diligence' to know the facts.
Copyright Law is Federal. Any attempt to get a Hearing in Federal Court requires a Registration. Your lawyer would have to present your case to a Federal Judge who would assess its merits, the likelihood the lawyer can prove the case, before letting you bring an Infringement Suit. The first item of assessment would likely be whether you have a Registration with the Register of Copyrights, Library of Congress.
For the cognoscenti, it is my understanding that you can zap a Registration to www.copyright.gov electronically, pay the fee ($20 the first time I did it, $45 the last time I did due diligence at copyright.gov). If all your data is accurate and your fee paid, the Registration date is the date of receipt, so, quickly accomplished.
I Registered about 32 Songs in a Collection, back when the world was young and the young were filming and recording me live with video cameras and those new-fangled telecomputers they all started carrying around in their pockets. Protected by Registration, I played with confidence that no one could steal my product, Intellectual Property, with potential for dollar value. That was back in the last century and no one has stolen anything, that I know of! Worked like a charm!
At that time I paid the same fee as I would for a single Song, to Register those 32, and 135 more, my 'Catalog' to date.
Now? Do your research so you will know where your Company stands. Relying on some guy on the interweb who read copyright.gov Circulars 26 years ago is not advisable. Bachman Turner Overdrive: "Takin' Care Of Business". Every day, in every way. You have to be a serious 'business-man' if you're going to present yourself to other Companies with product to 'sell', to 'License' for 'use'. They have to know you know what your signature means on a Contract. No surprises. No one with 'rights' you didn't know about or didn't tell them about popping up to bring the process to a screeching halt just when their mouth was watering for your product and the money it was going to make them.
Your Registration may use Form SR, Sound Recording, and Register the actual Recording. It may Register the Lyric and the Melody to which the words are sung, as presented on paper. The electronic zap, of course, is a Sound Recording, so you'll likely be advised to employ that form. On it you will document who the author(s)/composer(s) is/are, who the Publisher is, if any. You may want to Register your Company as a Publisher, with your Secretary of State. If you put your product out where it may get airplay on terrestrial radio, you may want to Register the Title and the names of the Song-Writer(s) and Publisher with a Performance Rights Organization ( www.ascap.com )( www.bmi.com ) to enable them to collect Song-Writer and Publisher Royalties, if any are earned.
Embedding these names and addressed in the Recordings, Metadata, enables computers to do that detection.
Big Boy Pants. Responsible conduct of Commerce, Government Registration. Contracting, committing to Supply Demand with no negative surprises, for you or Contractual 'partners'. This is 'business'; not just funsies. The 'employee(s)' of the Company have to deliver, to Supply the Demanded Human Competence that actually earns the Profits.
If you've never 'studied' Commerce before, in this or any other Commercial endeavor, you may want to do so, formally with a College or University, informally with books your librarian has or can get on request. Reading Circulars on Copyright.gov is 'study', 'working' for your Company. Motive, means, opportunity. Great sound, here. Love the atmosphere.
I think a good title for this would be "Claustrophobia"

I also liked the robots who did drugs and kidnapped the girl......funny bit as well

The opener with the new york cabbie was cool too. Creative too when transitioned a scene through the closed fridge door and darkness.

Top notch mind and eye candy movie made by Ivan Reitman and the then SCTV caste plus.

Ever watch SCTV. Great talent came out of that group.

Eugene Levy and Catherine O Hara worked together here years ago before their recent Schitts Creek hit and this segment is brilliant

It is an example of a Canadian show that moved successfully to American TV, where it aired for three years on NBC and ABC simultaneously.Wikipedia
Genre:Sketch comedy
Developed by:Bernard Sahlins, Andrew Alexander
Starring:John Candy, Robin Duke, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Tony Rosato, Martin Short, Dave Thomas

I was just a kid in the 70s/80s lol, but I sure recognize all the names smile

Try this as a starter for lyrics.

Death by fire

Light up, light up
The fire.
Light up, light up
The fire.

It dances, dances
Climbs ever higher.

Light up, light up,
Light up the fire.

Condemned by the maker
Eternally.

World of confusion, world of confusion
The final solution.
Death by fire

It dances, dances
Climbs ever higher.

Light up, light up,
Light up the fire.

Condemned by the maker
Eternally.

World of confusion, world of confusion
The final solution.
Death by fire

God has already done all the work... We're FORGIVEN, not condemned. The rest is up to us, WE HAVE TO CHOOSE. Do you accept God's forgiveness, profess your faith in Christ, and seek God's will? Or, are you merely one of those who roams the earth serving your own will? CHOOSE! Before it's TOO LATE! When it's too late... God will leave the earth to its own devices, and "those who roam the earth" will DESTROY THEMSELVES.

Avoid the politics and maybe try channeling a Wiccan from the Druid tradition.

Maybe start by wearing an oak leaf garland with your tutu to get into character.

I don't know Tony. I had to look up leather girder so I could picture it....

I expect this is another biblical reference about a girder in your eye preventing you from complaining about someone else's splinter???

Which I expect is a relief because it then allows you to wear that tutu....you know...the one you call "what, this ole thing?" smile

Well as you said-messin' about, but there's a lot to like and if it was more concise and kept to themes it would be cool also. Liked that effect at 2:30 that sounded vocal like-could see that being used more. Enjoyed your playing, nice work!

John, you just reminded me how absolutely crap that show was LOL. For some reason, it was shown over in the UK when I was a kid and it convinced me that Americans were incapable of being funny and would basically laugh at anything when told to. All the great American comedy I've seen since has shown how wrong I was, but it was a long way back from this abomination. Tony, you are truly blessed that this was before your time smile.

Just so you know Gary, I contacted them both... No response. Not that I was actually expecting anything. I believe the industry is so saturated with product that the patent office is the only place generating steady revenue lol... smile
