John,
Care to share what one cue on a show like that might be worth? Is it single use/pay or residuals?

Brian That's a big no, no in my publisher's terms of agreement. And I understand why they wouldn't want that info shown on the Internet. I'm extremely happy with their deal. They never license music via gratis. John

I hope no one watched the whole show last night to hear my music. I was given the wrong air date. It's the March 11th show my music will be on. The track is the first track on my website. Best, John

Probably didn't hurt anyone a bit! LOL. And it 'advertised' the show, perhaps hooking a few more who will 'make it their custom' to watch, so they'll be back March 11th, 2021. As to the 'benefit' in dollars and cents of a 'use', it can be very lucrative. It is generally just that, a 'use', for a specified purpose, and you still own the product, and can re-license it for other 'uses', as many times as you're able. A contract may specify that you can't re-license it for a period of time, or to another 'user' doing exactly the same thing, selling the same type product if for commercial advertising, but it's generally not very restrictive. This is called Synchronization Licensing, for those who may not be familiar. It's the music you hear in TV commercials, and soundtracks in TV shows, movies, movie trailers, documentaries. Cathy Heller of CatchTheMoonMusic told of licensing...let's capitalize that...Licensing... a mode of monetizing your music you may be overlooking... told of Licensing a piece, maybe 30 seconds, for use in a Kotex commercial (she whispered from behind her hand). It played, per the contract, for six months. It paid something like $27,000.00. They came back and wanted it another six months, and paid something like $37,000. I forget exact amounts. At the end of the second Synchronization License 'use', they wanted another year, and they paid $87,000. If you're producing broadcast ready recordings, if you can 'clear' the Master, if you 'own' the copyright, and can sign a contract without complications for a 'use' in these ways, it can be very lucrative. Cathy may be doing a Six Figure Songwriting Workshop again soon. www.catchthemoonmusic.com

Also many of these publishers for film & TV will reject your track if union musicians are used. To be safe, I always have the musicians & singers sign release forms. Best, John

Ha! No one uses bread boxes any more than they use ice boxes. By the way, the phrase, is it bigger than a breadbox was popularized by TV personality, comedian, and composer Steve Allen on “What’s My Line?”
I like your composition. Surely Steve Allen would have approved. 🙂

Watched it tonight. My music came in when a young guy was playing the piano (actually me playing - ha, ha). When he finished, the girl in the room started leaving, then turned around and told the guy she didn't find his playing unpleasant. Thank you. It was well heard. No one speaking while he was playing. Cool! John

Kinda surreal to hear your music being mostly ignored but then back handedly compliment as she walks away, The real question is "did the check clear?" Ha!

A guy playing the piano (my music) and a girl throwing him a compliment. I'm sure the actors had no idea who the real composer & performer was. My music was heard well, since it was a piano perfotmance by the actor (though you couldn't see his hands on the keys - ha, ha). Never a problem collecting pay with this company. It will go into my account the next quarter. ASCAP should pay well for this also. But the money is just an after-thought with me. John

That sounds perfect, John... And it fits the scene very well, I think they did a good job by choosing this song for this particular scene. I was just searching A Hollywood Romance on Spotify but couldn't find it there. Are you planning to upload the song to Spotify? It would be awesome, I would love to hear it more frequently. Two years ago I have received an offer from a Spanish show. They wanted me to compose 2 or 3 songs for their show and I worked on the songs for a month at my but, unfortunately, the show was canceled a week after I have sent my music to them... It must be feeling very good to hear a song you compose on a show.

John, Chris Lee is the actor ‘playing’ your tune. He graduated from Belmont with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2017. Cast as Thomas Jefferson in the Broadway production of Hamilton in Chicago before his Legacies role(s).

He does, according to a bio on Masquerade dot com, a music venue in Atlanta. In addition to piano, Chris sings and plays guitar and drums. A multi-talented guy, like so many others on JPF! <smile>

Wow, cant tell you how totally cool that is, (I literally cant) having an actor sing your song
If my work at songwriting could produce any results at all, id be happy with that.

Hey John,
If you're interested, we should add you to the cue for interviews for our YouTube channel. We just need a bio, some interesting photos if available, and possibly some youtube links or videos where your music appears. Our videos will get claimed by your publisher so you'll get any fractions of pennies that come in, but we're not doing the channel to make money (like everything we do). We just want to document our members, their careers and music in an additional format. And your story would likely help others if you are interested. Let me know via a PM.

Brian Thanks for thinking of me Brian. At this time, I'm not leaning towards such undertakings. If I ever get my bio and stuff together, I may be. Best, John
