Um, Well, It is true Jody when the Pilgrims came to the New World it was to get away from Big Government, not re-invent it. However the Movers and Shakers have been selling Tons of Snake Oil to the "Peasants" and the people bought it. It wasn't the Bankers that f'd up the country. It is what the people voted for. Suprisingly enough no matter which way you go Liberal or Conservative, the results are much the same, NO FREE LUNCH!
Uh, stevie, we have no State Religion, of which allows you to form your own, with a few rules.

Hi Jody and Stevie:
Let me state my case about "Separation of Church and State." First, you are correct, Stevie. The idea behind the religious aspect of the first amendment was to assure that our new country would not have a "state religion" as was the case in England. By their very actions... the founding father's intended this former colony to be a Christian Nation. Look at the back of a dollar bill and most of our coins. "In God We Trust!" It makes no mention of a denomination but our laws (and that of England) are based primarily on the Ten Commandments from the Judeo-Christian Bible.
The first amendment meant no specific state religion but their actions certainly gave a nod to God and his Commandments. The beauty of all this is that the rights of other religions (or non-religious individuals) are protected.
Our judges (appointed for life) at most of the upper levels of the judiciary seem to have twisted this to mean "no deference to God!" They are patently wrong!
I freely acknowledge my own peril if I were to present "my case" to the "Bench Legislators" of our current Supreme Court. They would hang me out to dry in a New York minute.
On a slightly different subject, I would request our leaders to change the terms of office for all judges... that after their first four years on the bench, to subject them to the "will of the people" by placing them on the ballot for either being retained for another four year period... or rejected outright and removed from office. (It'll never happen... but it sure might level the playing field.)
Regards,
---Dave

Oh [naughty word removed]. Now we're getting into religion. It's a slippery slope, people. Once we define ourselves as a "Christian Country" the road is paved for a tiered system that places those of other faiths on a lower level, and that paves the way for all kinds of nasty, nasty stuff.

Unfortunately, what ever country we live in, when it comes to politics and voting (at least we have a right to vote) we usually end up voting for what we perceive to be the lesser of two, three or four evils, because none of them are perfect. Each party is made up of men and women that have an agenda, be it good or evil, serving the people that elected them or self serving, they have to tow the party line, if they don't they will have a very short career in politics. Unfortunately which ever party is elected, they serve their masters, which is usually big money and big business that pull the strings behind the scenes.
The only fair government is theocracy which is coming soon to the whole world.

Right now the country the U.S. needs to be emulating is Iceland.
The fact that we haven't jailed the bankers that F'd up the economy and removed/replaced our broken government just baffles me. Its in the constitution as such to replace our government when its no longer of the people for the people - which it clearly isn't. I share the feeling, only without the bafflement. When all the campaign finance laws gradually unraveled and were ultimately trumped by the Citizens United ruling, a new form of government was created. In this modern system you need a LOT of money to get elected. As a result, politicians need benefactors, and the bigger the benefactor, the more loyal the politician. We like to think politicians are driven by their voters' demands, but it's clear that our politicians more readily answer to a different call. Money talks, so good luck finding a politician who dares say too much about the banks. We should all be united against the newly-protected influence of money in politics, but instead most citizens view this problem the way we always do—spun to our personal preference. We are more compelled to argue for our favorite tired old talking points, and how any competing tired old talking point is dangerous and wrong. It means that most citizens aren't really doing anything at all other than typing opinions in a vacuum. Meanwhile, the politicians we elect are committed to delivering returns to their investors.

Are we evil, by definition? And, therefore, lesser citizens and get less protection under the law?

When I imagine a future world ruled by a deity, I always wonder two things: 1) Why did the deity wait, and 2) once in place, would not people still be the same species, making the same poor decisions, thereby keeping the deity busier than ever keeping us all in line?

I imagine about 100% of the music that I listen to would be banned from heaven so what's the point? I cannot live an eternity listening to harps.

Jesus Christ will be the God of this world when Satan is displaced as god of this world which he is now. There's several thousand other religions that don't believe in this same god. What happens to them? What happens if its another religion's God for you?

And to paraphrase someone else more wiser than I:
Can't we all just get along?

Hi Jody, Bob and Fellow Threadweavers:
Jody, to answer your question about "believers" of different faiths, I suppose I'm cut from different cloth than many of my faith. I keep a miniature statue of Ghandi on my bookshelf in my studio... right beside a picture of Winston Churchill and Robert E. Lee.
I have always been a great admirer of most Native American Tribes... and if they choose to call God the "Great Spirit" that is perfectly fine with me.
I don't believe it is my right to pre-determine the destiny of any good man or woman. Even those who believe there is no God are subject to no judgment from me. (I reserve the right to pray for them!)
If we are to have a civilized society, we need to recognize the good in people and leave it to the Great Spirit to decide who goes left or right to whatever destination he has chosen for them. Those who don't believe the way I believe are free to do so... as long as they don't expect me to follow their beliefs.
I won't get into the other oddities of my faith and beliefs... but we all share an ever shrinking globe and universe.
I wish all of you the very best,
----Dave

On the religious side, the constitution also clearly spells out there is supposed to be a separation of Church and State. Since "contenders" and current representatives are clearly wearing their religion on their sleeves its a serious problem that also needs to go away.
The U.S. has become exactly what it was originally intending to get away from when it was started.
End of story. Well, one out of two isn't bad. I completely agree that we need (and may get) a complete reset. But it will be one of the bloodiest civil wars in world history and likely will lead to the end of Canada and Mexico and a reinvention of the borders of the USA. There will be no winners because so many will die that in the end everyone will wonder what we were fighting for and various "strong men" will rise up with the help of our enemies around the world to split us into pieces. Perhaps not in our lifetimes, but if it is in that time, not many of us will survive. As for religion and the church/state dogma on both sides, they did not specify a type of preferred religion, but they DID intend to protect religion from any interference by government. Freedom OF not FROM religion was key. It has been bastardized by the left for decades. I will say that the last thing I would want is to live under a theocracy, any more than any other form or authoritarian state which is where we're headed with the ever growing government. I don't agree with most religions, but think people should be able to express themselves and believe what they want as long as no physical harm comes to others because of it. It is due to the unconstitutional Presidency, Courts, Congress and local political machines that we need to be both glad and terrified of the 2nd amendment. Glad because it may be our last resort, and terrified because of what that will actually mean.
