Hi Everyone, I just wanted to share my final version of my song "You Had Me At Goodbye". It took 18 rewrites before I decided to get this demoed! Lead vocals sung by Melissa Duvall, produced by Galen Breen from Gator Hole Studios. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks everyone, Karen You Had Me At Goodbye YOU HAD ME AT GOODBYE (c) 2015 by Karen Maquilan VERSE 1: Second chances almost come too late And it came the day I saw you move away You packed your life in one big truck Squeezed me tight in one last hug But my life changed when you turned and walked away CHORUS: YOU HAD ME AT GOODBYE Love took me by surprise Hooked me with a feeling Now I can't let you go YOU HAD ME AT GOODBYE Suddenly I realized How much I really loved you When YOU HAD ME AT GOODBYE VERSE 2: Bundles of emotions that I buried long ago Ripped apart to pieces like confetti on the floor And it hurts so much to see you leave 'Cause you mean everything to me Now I want you more than a box of memories (Repeat CHORUS) BRIDGE: Racing to catch you down the lane Before you wave and drive away 'Cause you need to know I've loved you all this time (Repeat CHORUS) OUTRO: YOU HAD ME AT GOODBYE

Nice tune. Good hook. Like the alternative take on the line "You had me at hello". Very clever.
Like the melody.
Good job.

Nice groove, excellent production and the perfect vocals for the piece. Clever twist (on the movie title) in the hook and very well written.
All around great job.

The demo turned out well. Here's what I see - you're very talented and clever. I listened to a bit of your other tunes and you have real potential as a writer and voice is good enough to do your own demos if the style is right. Now here's my opinion on this song which could be way wrong, but I feel like the hook - 'you had me at goodbye'- just doesn't work and you're wasting your talent trying to make the story fit the hook. That said, just my opinion - I thought - "how do I unlove you" was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. Anyway I think you are super talented. - Pete

Hello Pete, I respect your opinion and I appreciate the response. FYI - I had been workshopping this song with various instructors on SongU and Gotham Writers Workshop in NYC for the past year-and-a half and had them review this before I sent this for a demo, so I would think that they would not give me the green light to demo if the hook line didn't work. Thanks again for the feedback. Karen

Hi Donna,
Thank you - it had been a challenging few years adjusting with life in the big city, but I'm glad to be back and writing again! :-)
Thanks for the feedback and for listening!

It's a pretty track. It might be more old school country than current, but I enjoed it.
It kind of reminded me a bit of "A Moment Like this" towards the outro of your chorus.
But I thought the singer did a convincing job.
Nice work.

Hi Karen, catchy, memorable hook, and well done demo, which is what it's all about. Since the song is a done deal, comments here are beside the point. Congrats and hope you have much success with it.

Karen. It's well written, well sung and well produced. "You had me at goodbye" works for me in this type of song which relies on the hook as something people can sing along with.
It works.

Hi TuiGorge, Vic, Mike & Charlie,
Thanks for listening, glad that you enjoyed it!
Charlie - it is a little more classic sounding, but it seems that the "nu-country" ballad trends have been sounding that way lately (ie. Rascal Flatts, Brantley Gilbert, Blake Shelton, etc.). :-)
Thanks,
Karen
