Awesome thread...best lesson I learned in our early JPF gatherings (Detroit, Pineyfest I and II ) was to pick material that showcases what you have within the limits of your capabilities....not stuff that pushes the envelope. It's hard enough as it is. Most important is to make sure it is in a comfortable key. Nothing makes you go pitchy like being uncomfortable (well maybe an out of tune guitar  ). I'm not a strong vocalist, but if all is right with the song, I can hold my own.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop
