One more thing about recording direct, the soundcard is really the key. When I first started using my computer for recording I used a simple card with 1 mic input,1 line input and stereo outputs for monitoring. Any Creative Soundblaster card will do the trick and they're relatively cheap. Also I never had a problem with latency using them.
