Cher, An old buddy of mine was an elegant calligrapher, and, man, could he make great notation charts! Mine look like they were done by a first grader.  Magne, Musical notation is, as you said, aesthetically pleasing. It has a balance and a flow. I've seen many systems of writing music, from shape notes to guitar tab and gregorian chant. I've never seen anything as useful, accurate and elegant as standard notation.
