I don't think cats bring home game to teach us how to hunt--though I'm not sure why they do it (cats, in my opinion, are totally alien intelligences). A lot of cats who have lived with me were technically employees--their job was wildlife control--and their "presents" may have been to show me they were doing their jobs. (Had one old Siamese cat who would regularly bring home things that were Rather Large. She was very good.)

War story. When I was city manager in Vale, oregon, we had a gopher problem at our airport; they would tunnel under the runways, which, if you were landing a plane, was a Very Bad Thing. Found out the letter carrier from the post office was a trapper in his spare time, and I hired him to get rid of the gophers. I told him I had to have invoices in order to pay the bill, and he said, "Fine. I'll bring you pelts." I loved it...

And now you can return to your regularly scheduled programming...
